Vodafone Qatar plans September IPO
By Daliah Merzaban on Monday, June 30, 2008

Vodafone Group's mobile phone unit in Qatar plans to sell shares in its initial public offering in September, Qatar daily The Peninsula reported on Monday.

Qatar's second biggest mobile phone operator said in May it would sell a 40 percent stake in the firm in an IPO and 15 percent to local institutional investors, leaving Vodafone and its local partner, Qatar Foundation, with 45 percent ownership.

HSBC Middle East Ltd and Qatar National Bank are lead advisers for the IPO, the newspaper said.

Vodafone owns 51 percent of the new operator, which ended Qatar's Telecommunications Co monopoly. Qatar is the world's biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas and home to about 840,000 people.

In December, Vodafone beat rivals including AT&T to win the licence, ending the last Arab mobile-phone monopoly. It paid $2.12 billion for the licence, the telecom regulator said in May. (Reuters)

I was with Voda in the UK and had nothing but bad experiences. I hate them with a passion.

I'm still confident that Voda Qatar will be much better though.

/-a-t-/metaleon, it's going to be a Qatari only offering at first.

jauntie said I still hold shares in Vodafone which I bought a few years ago ...

I haven't sold them because to date they never got back up to the price I paid for them. At one point they were only so many bits of worthless paper!!!

I bought when the 3G hype was going on - it never happened :( Sounds like amnesia and I got caught out at the same time in UK.

I would be very cautious of this one.

baldrick2dogs said It was great when Mobily started to operate in Saudi ...

Half the country immediately jumped ship hoping for better service, unfortunately they jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire. Mobily coverage was not as good as Al Jawal, but on the plus side Al Jawal's customers got improved service as a result of 50% bandwidth increase :o)

The one's who changed subscribers were also, initially, forced to change their phone numbers, though now you can keep your old number.

Personally I'll stick with tried and tested Q-Tel.
