QP offer

Lavenda's picture

Hi Folks
I was offered a package from QP for a Grade 15 job
- Basic 19,000
- Housing 14,000
- Furniture allowance 55,000
- Transport 2,000
- Medical coverage, free education for children
- Return air ticket for family.
- performance bonus
- Annual increment

My family will not join me in Qatar and hence my status will change from 'family' to 'Bachelor' status which lead to lower in housing and furniture allowance. The HR said QP very seldom offer Grade 16 package.

I have master degree and 17 years of working experience with 1 year in Oil & Gas.

Should I accept this is offer? Could you please advise me on this.

Yes, there r other companies which offers better salary and facilities.

Anyhow, u have to chose urself, whichever fits well.

I have an idea, get your family for few weeks and make their Resident permit and send them back if due to some reason they cannot stay in Qatar. But get them to Qatar before completion of 180 days or 6 months. Else the visa might cancel.

C u soon in Doha.....

Currently, I'm working with a major Oil & Gas company in Sarawak. The offer is actually not that attractive comparing to my current package. Even with negotiation, I don think it will reach QAR25,000. Most likely I will give it a miss unless there is possibility to upgrade to Grade 16 with min QAR25,000 and free housing.

You may get a little career progression but don't expect it.
QP should be aware of inflation but getting anything done on compensation is not an easy task. That's why the top of my head is flat.
Historically, they do nothing until it becomes critical and then over react.
The current trend appears to be (from what I hear) allowances. They don't have an impact on ESB.

Be careful! QP are not the best employer in Qatar (or the most honest when it comes to recruitment) and you need to really understand the in's and out's of their offer. Look at it VERY carefully and consider the high cost of living, transport and accommodation in Qatar. Also, it is likely you will suffer considerably (financially) when you change from married to single status.

Best of luck!

Lavenda said Overlook... ...

I hear many concern after ones moved to Qatar and some regret on their decision. But are most of them particularly from Msia felt being cheated and regret accepting the offer?

Overlook's picture

Overlook said Lavenda ...

I am sure that this is true, but it's not only people from M'sia who regret their decision to go there. In my case QP's offer seemed reasonable, but when I arrived there I found that in fact the allowance offered for housing rental, and the interest free loan to purchase a car was not sufficient or realistic.

But the worst thing for me was the approach and attitude of my management towards the job in hand. I have a lot of working experience and I was fully committed to do a good job for QP, but I was not allowed to do my job because of politics (and favouritism based on race) within the department.

During the two years I was there six people (including me) left my department for these reasons. You must be aware that once you sign a contract with QP and you get your residents permit, you are not allowed to leave the country without an exit visa, which must be approved by QP. In addition, because QP find it difficult to recruit staff, once you sign up with them they are very reluctant to let you resign!

If you tender your resignation officially and it is accepted, about fifteen approval signatures from various department heads are required before you will be allowed to leave. This process can take six to eight weeks, or even longer in some cases!

So, many dissatified employees simply do not return to Qatar once they take their scheduled leave, which is what the six people from my dept did, including me. Others (many!) request emergency leave and do not return.

Having said this, if you decide to accept their offer, you should insist that QP provide you with accomodation, transport & school fees for your children. I advise you not to accept any offer which requires you to find your own accomodation and to purchase your own vehicle under the interest free loan system.

Good luck and all the best!

millionlim's picture

millionlim said Overlook, may I know what ...

Overlook, may I know what grade and job r u doing in QP? Do u mind to share ur package, just for our reference and consideration.

Overlook's picture

Overlook said millionlim ...

If you read my post carefully, you will realise that I no longer work for QP. 'Grades' are simply a means used by QP to confuse potential employees, because of course you, as a potential employee, are not fully aware of the status accorded to each grade!

In my experience QP are not honest and they have little or no regard for the welfare of their employees. They need to recruit people, but having once recruited them, they hold them strictly to the terms of their contract without regard to the ever increasing cost of living and accomodation.

If they, as the employer, don't care about your welfare and problems as an employee, how can they expect full committment from you when it comes to doing the job which you were engaged to do?

As far I know, QP will not offer free accomodation to new comers, perhaps there is a change recently. This made it very difficult to decide to accept an offer. Particurlarly the housing allowance is non-negotiable. May I know you was previously from which domain in QP.

Overlook's picture

Overlook said rizalazhar ...

Yes I was informed, but the problem was that QP MISINFORMED me about the cost of housing and of vehicles, both of which I had to subsidise out of my own pocket!

I was there with my family and it was written into my contract that I must purchase a 4X4, and that QP would provide me with an interest free loan for this purpose. The QP loan was about 30% short of market rate for a new 4X4, the housing allowance provided was 20% to 30% short of the market rate at that time.

Many people in my dept complained bitterly about this, but nothing was ever done about it during the two years I was there. So perhaps you may now begin to understand how I feel about QP and the liars they use as recruiters.

By the way, if you are single and QP put you in Al Bayyan for 3 months you are very, very lucky! Al Bayyan villas are usually for families only.

Overlook's picture

Overlook said rizalazhar ...

Well I wish you good luck and I hope it works out for you. But I think you will find that the housing allowance provided will not be quite enough. All the property owners and estate agents know how much housing allowance QP pay, and they always set their rentals higher.

porsche168's picture

porsche168 said QP offer ...

The rental here is very high and the standard of unit is very low. A 2 bdr apart is about 8K /mth and up and a villa like al-bayyan is about 15k/mth and up. On top of that landlord like to jack up price and play all kinds of tricks like asking for 1 yrs rental. So coming to Doha is like paying tax also i.e. thru exhorbitant rentals. No doubt cars are cheap but the repairs and service are very high, maybe 2-3 times that of M'sia.
So the choice is yours!!!

Overlook's picture

Overlook said porsche168 ...

What you say is correct, I hope rizalazhar is taking note of this. It's a matter of choice; do you accept and tolerate the nonsense in Qatar or do you leave?

The problem is that the only way to find out if the job & the place is suitable for you is by experiencing it for yourself. By the time you truly become aware of all the problems and inequities in Qatar & QP, and if you then decide that you do not like the situation, it is already too late.

Why? Because by that time you have already signed a contract which is subject to Qatari law and which affords you (in reality) no rights whatsover.
QP employees have no recourse to Qatari labour laws because QP is a government body and it's employees are exempted from the labour laws.

As already stated, QP do not like their employees to resign, and if you decide to leave the resignation process can take two months or more.

So if you have another job lined up, which employer is going to wait two months for you?

The only way out once you are sucked into the horrible, bureaucratic machine that is QP, is to take emergency leave and do not come back, or simply do not return from your scheduled leave.

Many, many QP staff have chosen to take this route because of the deliberately obstructive QP resignation process.

So, once again I say beware (Awas!) to all potential QP recruits.

dweller's picture

dweller said Overlook ...

I am confused.
Why would QP write into your contract that you had to buy a 4X4 vehicle?

Overlook's picture

Overlook said dweller ...

I suppose it was so that they did not have to supply and maintain one for me! It applied to all the people who were recuited into my dept around the same time as me. The job was site based and a lot of driving was involved between Doha, Messaieed & Ras Laffan.

This is just another indication of the strange ways of QP. Normally it is part of the construction contractor's scope to supply vehicles for client staff.
But not with QP...

Lavenda's picture

Lavenda said Overlook... ...

Would QP take any legal action if ones didn't come back after the scheduled leave? I guess the housing deposit for rental would be gone too....

Overlook's picture
