Worked! Work! Working!

yammar08 this perhaps is the most interesting post i've seen here in filexpat. especially when you're already suffocated with discussions geared towards the usual... this topic is a peek into real life real world situations & will tell us "what the ^&%%& are doing here (doha) anyway". okay, here's my bit...

every six months, i ask my employees to voluntarily submit an essay about their work contributions & achievements for the past six months. plus, they have to write down their "planned" achievements for the next six months. of all the nationalities, filipinos are the ones who were so eager to participate, roughly 80% did. the others, said they have no time. but anyway it's voluntary so they've got all the right not to.

reading what my fellow pinoys have submitted... mostly what they've written are not achievements but simply, a list of jobs they've accomplished or, jobs that they're supposed to do in the first place! like one said "...i was never late for work" i mean, of course you should not & it's not an achievement because its your duty to come on time! nobody can't seem to distinguish between achievements and accomplishments. well i don't know but accomplishments is simply doing your basic job. but achievements, are extraordinary accomplishments that stretches beyond your abilities, expectations, & motivation. for example, an accomplishment is "...i have completed the processing of 200 accounts payables as per schedule". while an achievement could be "...i have improved existing a/p procedures that allowed the processing of 200 accounts in half the time". see the difference? i always point to them the difference & try to change their mindsets towards this. for the past year, many of my filipino staff & workers have improved their working habits. they have become more professional & most of all, they learned to have vision. with that, they are able to wake up from their dream-like mindset & hindi lang basta basta nag hihintay ng swerte o increase. all with just a piece of essay...because, that essay is about real situations. nothing is impossible if you "get real"...

to piggyback on yammar08's thread, are we filipinos good at simply accomplishing, or achieving?

remember the filipino kasabihan "ang tinatapos dito ay kontrata hindi trabaho"... ito ang isa sa dapat mabago. paano, respond to yammars thread & i'll tell you...

alec yong kasabihan na sinasabi mo na kontrata lang ang tinatapos di trabaho joke lang yan if you see what really happen. you cannot just finish your contract without finishing a single work. if you meet other nationalities they will tell you Filibini no. 1. you know why because Filipinos are efficient, hardworking at marami pang iba compared to other nationalities. you will not finish your contract without acheiving anything so you cannot say that you are here just for money. after your contract there are a lot of posibilities and opportunities.

Matanong lang po Mr. Alec, are you working at this moment?

If yes, you are a good example of smartworker but not a hardworker.

sana po talakayan lng tayo here regarding "WORK" (sorry sa caps) no unnecessary comments so as to maintain the topic being discussed...

just an observation alecs and don't make it personal... you see people i know here (QLfilex) aren't that eager to this kinda topics for one reason... (their) achievements as what you call it are not a thing to "brag" about (for some people, they do that, but definitely not you alecs, ung iba lng oks?) OR to "announce" in public (forums like this one) re their achievements... maybe bcoz they just don't want to or for some may think na "mayabang" in a way na sabihin un.
i believe achievments are better served when others sees it, says about it and proves it not just the person alone pero sabi nga maganda din ishare so others may find inspiration... dun naman po pumapasok ang meet-ups at salo-salu and those achievements are discussed on those meetings and not here. kaya nga we can differentiate those people na "mayabang lng" (even meron ipagyayabang, ksi meron man mayabang padin) to those who really give geniune inspiration to others, kase nga "others" na ang nagsabi not thy self.

sa ideas naman, marahil lam natin kung bat tayo andito, so for ideas we could start to that. sa experience, nagiipon pa eh... ^_^

bosing alecs, un po e sa ganang obserbasyon ko lng... talaga minsan na dapat isipin nating mainspire towards the success of others at hindi po inggit... and also, i believe most of us ay hindi po inggit towards those achievements, but rather a form of self pity, you see if a figure like you saying the achievements you have to an audience of filipinos were in majority hasn't even close to or been able to achieve yours, would end up you being "mayabang" to their point of view than be inspired of what your saying/sharing. kase nga po us filipinos are rather good on seeing negative than positive things (lucky to those who do not), what more in life pa and bcoz of that self pity arises and not inggit, coz if inggit sometimes this feeling can be a driving factor din for someone to achieve somtime dba, kinda negative feeling-positive effect scenario and that's what makes an inspiration to some. pero pag self pity puro negative na lng... regarding naman po sa ibang bansang sinabi mo like the us, mas malakas kasi ang hatak from what their former leaders achieved kaya citizens nila feels the same... ang sa aten, we see our leaders' a failure kaya when someone shows up and make their achievements public (esp. those promising politicians) ganun din naman ang hatak bcoz of our old leaders achievements ika nga.

same goes sa idea ng democracy, "united we stand, divided we fall" when viewed by us filipinos becomes negative, "divided we stand, united we fall"...

and it's sad. :(

(nb: i use "we/us" pra lang sa pag describe, am not pertaining to anyone nor saying that my observation is right, observation lang at sagot ko lng ke manong alecs)

Oo nga naman ,Yammar pasensyahan mo na ,maganda talaga ang thread mo ,and for sure kung hindi naumpisahan ng ISANG CARTOON CHARACTER maraming sasagot sa thread .interesting kasi na i share ang mga nangyayari sa work ,whether achievement or ntome sabi mo nga simple discussions like - showing what kind of employee are you, your job satisfaction, most challenging experiences or difficult situations you had so far and how you overcome it (boss, salary, co-workers, etc).
ang tao kasi di na kailangang diktahan sa pagsagot .we have our own mind to do and write what we want na di kailangang hamunin pa ng iba ,na parang gusto lang tsyong gawing utu-uto.at higit sa laht di naman tayo empleyado ng taong ito.

ay ganda ng thread na ito,dami bang cartoon character d2? la naman ah, ay meron yatang isa, he'he!talagang dapat tayong maging proud sa mga achievements natin sa buhay, pero siguro you don't have to brag or mention it everytime na magpost ka d2 di bah. iba-iba tayo ng klase ng avhievements, meron sa work, sa love, sa family at iba pa.kagaya ako i'm a stay home Mom 24/7!, i guess my greatest achievement (i'm speakin for myself po) is that I'm a loving, patient and masikaso na wife & Mom, siguro my kids & my husband can attest to that.pero sa totoo lang ka ka stress din bah (sama ako sa seminar,he'he)Sana lang kasi yung mga taong matatalino d2 at saksakan ng dami ng achievements pls. don't be too "know it all",masama din yan sa kalusugan, masyadong seryoso.kaya mga kabayan basahin nyo yung na post ko na "praktikal lang si bebeng" para matawa naman kayo at mabawasan stress natin.

Hmmn..nagumpisa pala sa achievements ang usapan..for me, in my profession I guess being able to brought up creative ideas or set up a project that encouraged each member to work as individual and as a team...then being able to introduce tools that are now beneficial in determining and solving engineering problems, etc
Ayun po, since we are in diff field I wont elaborate more.

About time management..I prioritize and sort out what are:
1. Impt and Urgent
2. Impt but not Urgent
3. Not Impt but Urgent
4. Not Impt Not Urgent

That works for me..gumagawa ako ng quadrant dyan, but I appreciate Mr Alecs...if he could give more details on proper time management or stress management. Yung no.4 ko meron talaga ako nung mga ganung activities kasi boring naman kung wala hehehe.

Any advice on how you manage conflict naman in your team? As a leader meron ibat ibang approach pedeng as peer consultation, giving advice, etc.. no specific strategy is effective, it depends on the situation and on the people. If puro machines na nga lang sana ang imomonitor ko mas madali kesa yung may minamanage kang mga tao. Im sure Alecs and most of you feel this way too. At ang mga makina iseset mo lang sa tamang settings ok na...tapos pede rin icalibrate, e ang mga subordinates? iba iba sila, then pag may conflict within your group dapat masettle nyo agad para hindi maapektuhan ang work output/relationship..

For me i try to learn many things in my work. Lahat ng klaseng mga seminars regarding my field ay pinapasukan ko hindi lang for the purpose of collecting all that certificates of trainings kundi para matuto na rin. Galing po ako sa military service and for us ay napakaimportante ang "schooling" dahil isa ito sa mga basehan kung dapat ka ngang mapromote or malipat sa magandang posisyon. With due respect to you my friend alecs but a lot of members here are very talented and well achieved hindi lang sa buhay nila kundi pati rin sa work kaya for me its not advisable to brag what are you or what you do in your office. Baka dumating ang isang araw eh mapalitan ka sa posisiyon mo ng isang taga QL Fil Expat din na mas mahusay pala kesa sayo.

sige nga, tell us at least 10 contributions that you've made for your company that made you an important person? para naman mapatunayan mo kung gaano ka stress sa workplace mo.

neppilosopo, wala tayong personal attacks dito kasi discussion lang. kung hindi maabot ng isip mo ang mga posts or topics dito, manahimik ka na lang. or better yet, mag bowling ka na lang where you'll be much more useful.

hello kurt! i agree with you. but you must change saying working here is a "challenge". but rather say its an "opportunity". for every challenging situation brings you new knowledge which leads you to more opportunities.

so kapag may mahirap na trabaho, sabihin mo lang "okay ito kasi opportunidad kong matuto o mahasa ang kaalaman ko". at wag sana lumabas sa bibig natin na "hindi ko naman trabahao yan ah?!"

"Achievement" came from the root word "achieve". From US thesaurus means attainment,"ACCOMPLISHMENT", success, feat, triumph, realization, reaching, getting. Whoaa! look what i found! "ACCOMPLISHMENT" is a synonym of ACHIEVEMENT. and according to English Encarta Dictionary- Achievement is 1. something that somebody has succeed in doing, usually with effort 2. An act or process of finishing something succesfully. So, hindi pala sya katulad ng sinabi mo sa unang post mo na "achievements, are extraordinary accomplishments that stretches beyond your abilities, expectations, & motivation" and sa huling post mo rin na "someone who becomes different, becomes better everyday of their lives" (parang may mali pa sa grammar mo.It sounds so obselete! Saan mo ba nakuha itong meaning na ito?). In my own humble opinion. If you accomplished something at the end of the day and you feel proud of it no matter how simple it is on the eyes of other people, then you "achieved" someting for yourself. Tatess, once upon a time dreamed to become a Dentist one day, and now that she made it! Ain't that a big achievement for her? Hmmmm...

at kung achievements lang po no need to elaborate, kung gusto mo tumawag ka sa bahay namin, sa kapitbahay namin, sa aking mga kaibigan dito sa company, at kung saan saan pa! i pm mo lang ako at ibibigay ko ang lahat ng telepono for u to investigate... d naman ako hambog para ipangalandakan ang achievements ko... galing lang naman ako sa hirap, nakapagtapos ng sarili kong kayod, at nakapunta sa ibat ibang bansa, nakapagpatayo ng bahay hanggang 3rd floor... hay nako tama na nga...

para sa kin ung Achievements ay maipapakita not only in words but in action. Maganda na ang ideas, valuable ideas and experiences can be SHARE, at isa ung achievement sa isang tao if you only SHARE!

The experience I had and a biggest achievements I experienced is when we had a Premier night of one film showed in SM Megamall cinema 10. Ang hirap talaga after so much preparation from advertising, preparing brochures etc etc... almost 300K pesos ang aming profit which proceeds to church mission. sa mga sponsor pa lang nakuha na namin ung bayad sa film (50k) and even sa SM cinema... after so much stress makikita mo ung pinagpaguran mo dahil jumpacked ung sinehan, even the film distributor ay nasiyahan sa outcome...

marami pa rin achievements at na ishare ko na rin ito sa ibang organization and individuals...

that was an achievement di ba ung nagkakaisa at walang awayan...

di ba during the seminar may mga activities tapos meron pang actual na gagawin at kung ano ano pa... kaya un naghahanap ako nong seminar na ganon... wala kasi dito non... sa supervisory seminar d b dadalhin kayo sa isang convention o resort at ang daming activities kasama na ung rest and recreation diba? tapos marami kang matutunan hay sana lang meron dito sa mga company kaya ako imbes na maburo ako sa office I see to it na balance ang aking buhay, may recreational and sports activities me like bowling, badminton, jogging and etc... i have also a spiritual time kaya un sobrang super na hyperactive hehehe... sometimes gusto ko ring mapagisa at un nag ja jacuzzi ako at steam bath...
sabi nga we need to enjoy life at its fullest...

alam ko maraming rin mga pinoy dito ang nasa Human Resources/Managment who has an ability to conduct seminars like these and sana magkaroon tayo dito for free sa mga pinoys... maganda un to meet new friends, to learn more, etc.. nag bu build ng camaraderie and friendship sa bawat isa... sarap pag nagkakaisa at nagmamahalan di ba dahil hinahanap natin un bagay na un...

yung sinsabi mo is called "team building". di pa uso dito yan pero sinimulan namin sa new company ko dito. dinala ko yung halos 50 office staff ko sa disyerto thru the services of "safari adventure".

but you see nep, one of the success in life is for one to be happy at work & considers it as a source of strenght, not stress. yung bang excited ka pumasok araw araw kasi alam mo magiging kapaki pakinabang ka sa mundo. then pag uwi mo sa bahay ang saya saya mo kasi nararamdaman mo na marami ma kang nagawa giving you a sense of fulfillment. we must learn to love our work so it can love us back... later bro, gotta go pack for my trip.
