Strange fact about Gandhi.. ...Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet.
He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath.
All of these attributes made him.....
A super callused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.
Think about it!

Entire world is busy wooing ...Entire world is busy wooing with capitalism but Gandhiji’s thoughts will remain as immortal as doctrines of Bagvat Gita, Quran & Bible because he experimented wisdoms of it and shown the world that it is still possible to follow it.
But it is misfortune of the mankind that we still perjure ourselves, busy in deliquescing corruption, Himsa (Violence), Asatya (Untruth). Sims, mankind has decided to destroy self. Day is not far when entire world has to follow his foot steps……(may be barefoot……which Briteexpat may not like)otherwise only debris will remain (US will definitely made it possible).

If we cant learn from the history...... ...Very sorry to hear few remarks on Gandhi
I think instead wasting time on his of personal attributes like bad breath(?) etc, can we something very important ?
How many people understand the sorrow, the pain of being poor, underpriviladged, hungry.
How many people give up luxuries of their lives for the fellow country men.
How many people give up clothing even if they are rich and wear bear minimum because their countrymen dont get many clothes.
Gandhi was one man who could influence not only india but also entire world.
So called "Frail" man with a loin cloth could drive british away from India. Today armies of thousands of people are not able to do many things.
He also fought apartheid , racism, double standards and exploitation of poor people in mines of south Africa successfully.
I feel we should practice his three monkys theroy
Hear No evil
Speak no evil
see no evil
is there something to learn...?
If people like Gandhi made this world a better , peaceful place ?

zartosht ...I respect Gandhi and all he stood for and the values and had.
But to attribute the indipendence of India to him completely is not cent percent correct.
Thousands have died during the kind of protests he invented (allow me to use that word .. & no name of those poor souls.)
The most important aspect of Britishers leaving India was more due to economic than political. Understand India was a golden goose for British empire and when this golden goose started becoming a liability rather than an asset.... Britishers had to leave & leave with respect. Please go through the history very very very well and then you will understand the REAL reason of Indipendance than what is shown to the world.
skdkak said
Let me add / clarify again ...Let me add / clarify again on the above subject...
Britsh had started maintaining India as a colony with reverse funds i.e Britain had to maintain India as a colony with funds from them and this is exactly what a colony is not meant to be - hence the indipendance

Now Indian companies taking over British and other companies, to name the recent one...TATA taking over Landrover.
British taking up jobs in India.
This is a new phenomenon known as Reverse-colonisation !

skdkak: ...It is true that, we should not forget other heroes of Independence movement though many of them adopted violence. But at the same time you should not undervalue Gandhiji's role.
British left India for three main reasons:
1. The circumstances of the British economy after the war: severe financial crisis while the Labour government tried to establish the Welfare State and to follow an expensive policy of nationalization
2. In 1947 India was on the verge of revolt because of the growing independence movement (Here Gandhiji played major roll)
3. The international situation : the position of Britain in the context of Cold War and the general anti-colonialist attitude throughout the world.

How India Got Independance.
The Viceroy's wife tells the Indian leaders "Select your nominees I will feel them up their 'members' blindfolded and guess their names". She goes on "If I can tell all their names then you dont get independance".
So the Congress selets 3 - Sardar Patel, Chacha Nehru & Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
First she feel up Patel..."Oh! this is the Iron Man of India...Sardar Patel."
2nd was Nehru...."Oh! this semi-soft one belongs to none other than the poet....Chacha Nehru!"
Gandhi was pespiring ..all the hardwork was comming to an end......this moment could make-it-or-break-it.
Gandhi gets an idea...he turns around...
She feels him up...."Oh! this is the easiest...this is Sarojini Naidu - the Nightingale of India".
The viceroy had no option but to give India Independance......Thats how India got Independance....
Ok....ok.. I am going to wash my mouth with soap & water...lol

Agree with skdak on the independence thing. I wouldnt say he got us independence. He did play a pivotal role in uniting the people. In a nation that has always reverred saints and abstinence, the charismatic 'half naked fakir' became an idol of their hopes.
I would say Brits had as much hand as anyone in projecting Gandhi as the leader. It suited the Brits better to have a populous nation unite under a non-violent leader than a violent one.( This can be seen in their selection of delegates for the round table conferences and such). They massacred the radicals and kept having talks with Gandhi, often giving false hopes. I often wonder whether Gandhi wud have survived half a day with an adversary of the kind of Hitler .
None of which denies the greatness of the person.I think it was Albert Einstein who said "Future generations will have difficulty believing such a person ever walked the earth." Quite True...its difficult to belive that some one cud pull the kind of feats he did, esp during the partition. His presence alone in Navkhali kept the whole area free of violence when whole regiments cud not achieve peace in the northwest.
IMHO,Any one who wants to 'defend' Gandhi, should remember and follow the ideals of the Mahatma first.
Coz there arent many who cud say "My life is my message"
