India: Bombay's pothole roads cause miscarriages
Bombay's potholed roads have been blamed for an increase in the number of miscarriages by women who were badly injured after travelling over them.
Doctors said potholes were responsible for a 10 per cent increase in the number of expectant mothers in India's financial capital who had been forced into terminating their pregnancies over the past two years.
"Women who travel extensively on bad roads often come in bleeding and the pregnancy is lost," said Dr Narendra Malhotra, president of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of India.
His comments come following a survey of more than 200 pregnant women.
Dr Nikhil Datar of the Nanavati Hospital said: "We get patients who have been involved in accidents because of potholes and have had miscarriages or started bleeding when the jolt was very bad."
Earlier this month, Bombay municipal authorities said there were 1177 potholes across the city's 1200 miles of road. Of these, 918 potholes had been filled and just 259 remained.
But local residents said the repair work was temporary and lasted barely more than a few days before the holes - which are primarily caused by India's heavy monsoon rains - reappeared. They have launched a city wide campaign to force the municipality to repair them.
Three years ago, the high court ordered authorities to repair the city's notorious roads within a month after a doctor filed a public interest petition.
Although the authorities complied, the relative smooth roads surfaces lasted barely a few weeks before they were pitted with massive potholes yet again posing a danger to the city's voluminous and chaotic traffic.

Let's see the survey first on pregnant women in Qatar ......before we need to see the road potholes.
If I remember correctly, you cannot residue a birth certificate here in Qatar and you need to file the certificate back to yer home country...for expatriates, that is.
