Worth having a dog in Doha ??!
Hi, for those who have a dog, do you believe its acceptable to have a dog here ? if you live in a flat (big one) and work 8 hours a day , is your dog happy to stay alone ? Beside, there is no greenery, forest, parks where you can bring him for a walk, its seems that he will be walking in noisy avenues, streets or sand outside doha!!
Does who have a dog, i would like you to share your experience and feed back please

I decided to have cats a few ...I decided to have cats a few years ago because I was living in a flat. I first got one cat and then decided to get another one so they could keep each other busy. I can assure you cats are fine staying alone in a flat during the day (as long as there's water and food). Regarding dogs, I'm not sure as I've never had them in a flat.

what you going to do when ...what you going to do when you go on your annual leave?
if you going to leave it in the kennel have you check the cost of the kennel?
and just in case if you go ahead with the idea, pls dont buy the animals from the pet shop. There are plenty of dogs in Doha need a good home. You can PM Scarlett and she will be more than happy to show you around the homeless dogs in the animal shelter.
good luck.

Most likely, you won't find ...Most likely, you won't find an apartment that allows dogs. They're almost impossible to find.
If you have a dog that's used to being outside, a flat is a hard adjustment... it was very very hard on our dog. (We were in an apt for a year waiting for a villa) We got a second dog to keep her company and that helped a lot... Since the second dog has been mainly inside since she was a puppy, she is happier in the AC than playing outdoors:) but the first dog wants to be outside all day.
Also, certain breeds of dogs are very social and do not do well if left alone all day... many suffer from seperation anxiety (seriously)... so if you are thinking about getting a dog, but no one will be home during the day, it's not fair to the dog (plus who will train it not to have accidents in the house?)

Are you planing to buy a dog ...Are you planing to buy a dog after getting to Doha or do you already have a dog that you want to bring when you're coming to Doha? I'm from India and I have a dog in an apartment and she's doing fine with my 8-9 hrs work schedule. But she's a cocker spaniel and I have someone come and feed her and take her out in the afternoon so she's actually alone for only abt 4 hrs at a time. Also I make it a point to walk her in the morning and play with her in the evening when i get back home and spend a lot of time with her when I'm at home. Also initially when she was a puppy I worked from home for a week so that she could get settled in. She used to cry when I left home to work before but now she's perfectly ok. But I spend a lot of time with her when I'm home and during weekends, its almost like my life revolves around her when I'm not working:)

I would think it more unkind ...I would think it more unkind to the dog under these conditions.
If you go ahead, beware what you choose, the puppies here tend to grow big, Kennel fees are expensive. After a hard days work, are you motivated enough to walk your dog .......... he will be gasping to get out for exercise!!!
It is quite a commitment even if you have a house and garden, so consider carefully.

Good mornings with dog ...Good mornings with dog shit,,, happy nieghbours who loose their sleeps because of your dogs sweet barks or bites if they seldom barks....lol,,,, besides if you prefer you can have an expatriate for a dog , you can feed with leftovers and cheaper than a dog.

Fatcat--- I'm glad to hear ...Fatcat--- I'm glad to hear that, but when we were looking at a apartments last year, (and they weren't anywhere near what I consider posh), NONE allowed dogs... most were okay with cats/ birds/ fish, but not dogs. Perhaps we didn't look in the right place, but we found nothing.

Dogs in Doha ...Yes, it's possible, but very hard work. You can't enjoy walking your dog on in the street as in other places, not acceptable in parks etc or anywhere nice really, restricted to walking on/between the building sites which for a woman alone with a dog can often result in pestering and harassment. Beach is possible, but a car trip away so you have to be organised. Also as Novita says, think carefully about who would look after it when you go away. Our dog was a rescue from the US and we happen to be very lucky that she is easy going and adaptable in her environment, and seems to enjoy her walks sniffing around the overflowing trash cans and dead cats dotted around our neighbourhood!

yes it is modern wonderer ...yes it is modern wonderer ... but some people not prepare to pay for the kennel and abandoned their dog after calculating the bill. I am not sure about the present rate ... but last time i heart about QR 50 to QR 60 maybe more per day.

I don't really believe ...it is fair to leave a dog cooped up for 8 hours while you are at work, I left my dog with my daughter in the UK, better weather and lots of nice places for walks etc, I miss her terribly but would be selfish to bring her here.
