my thoughts on Russia-Georgia conflict

nicaq25's picture

I hate War...no matter what the reasons behind. Who's wrong or right.I feel sympathy for those who were caught in between, the civilians, the children, the old women/men. Not only in Russia-Georgia but same in our country (Southern Mindanao). Why people could just live peacefully?

Dracula said I doubt any European country ...

I doubt any European country would want to intervene directly against Russia. Ukraine, depsite Yushchenko being close to Saakashvili, will certainly not intervene, because Russia is a threatening power to Ukraine. I'm not sure what Putin's Belorussian clone is doing in this situation.
The Ukraine won't do anything: any action against Russia will split the country in two.

Essentially the only powers I could see getting involved are Azerbajian, Turkey(if Adjara revolts) and perhaps Armenia.
The US is tied down in Iraq and has diplomatic worries abroad (but the US supports Georgia diplomatically, for sure).
For real I think that no one not directly threatened by a direct involvement in the conflict would move until US say what they do. I would be surprised that US intervene too, but NATO rethoric is the totally opposite of the Russia one. Russia says: "Ossetia is no more part of Georgia" and NATO says: "The sovereignty of Georgia must be respected".
Diplomacy can still rule the conflict but the ways to do so are tiny.

As we've seen in the past, rhetoric and action are two different things..

The USA "uses" NATO as a mouthpiece when it suits it..In the present situation, the West is pretty much helpless. Many Europeans don't have much sympathy for Georgia's actions, which were rash to say the least. It played into Russian hands.

I doubt whether Turkey would risk a major confrontation. I think the West will play a waiting game and gradually come up with a coordinated plan to tackle Russia, but it will take time and BALLS on the part of the European leaders, especially Germany.

The west will try to Isolate Russia through sanctions. Economic Sanctions even though it will not have any effect on Russia is a sort of War. They could even try to push away the Veto power of Russia.

Russia has very few alies on its side....lets see who ...

1. China (Which was tried to split just like USSR with "democracy" and ended in Tinamen square).
2. Iran.
3. Venezuela.
4. India is now tilting towards US.
5. Brazil?

So in case of a war Russia knows it has none to fall back on other than China. Thus it will start to consolidate territories just as Stalin did when Hitler was on the rampage. US cannot do anything as it is knee deep in Iraq, Afghanistan and now at the door of Iran.

If a couple of more key territories goes under the Russian Flag the US will be forced to react.

You are so right.. Putin is pulling the strings.. The worrying thing is that he could be around for a very long time..

The West needs to be very wary..Madeleine Albright the former U.S. Secretary of State rescribed Putin as someone who is more likely to define his job than be defined by it.

"After our first meetings, in 1999 and 2000, I described him in my journal as "shrewd, confident, hard-working, patriotic, and ingratiating." In the years since, he has become more confident and — to Westerners — decidedly less ingratiating."

His vision of Russia is that of a great power in the old-fashioned European sense. Such powers have spheres of influence and subjugate lesser powers. At home, they celebrate national traditions and prize collective glory, not individual freedom.

The sad thing is that nowhere do I see the need for Russia to invade Georgia?? All the issues could have been solved politically, through sit downs and meetings and no innocents would have had to die.

IT just seems to me like Russia and NATO are trying to say "Look! See! We still big men!" by playing with a tiny country that was suffering internal political strife.
