Syria offers Russia missile defense base
Syria has offered Russia the opportunity (if that's what you call it) a missile defense base on their territory.
Welcome to the world of unintended consequences..
The Russian aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov” is ready to head from Murmansk towards the Mediterranean and the Syrian port of Tartus. The mission comes after Syrian President Bashar Assad said he is open for a Russian base in the area.
The “Admiral Kuznetsov”, part of the Northern Fleet and Russia’s only aircraft carrier, will head a Navy mission to the area. The mission will also include the missile cruiser “Moskva” and several submarines, Newsru.com reports.
President Assad in meetings in Moscow this week expressed support to Russia’s intervention in South Ossetia and Georgia. He also expressed interest in the establishment of Russian missile air defence facilities on his land.
The “Admiral Kuznetsov” also last year headed a navy mission to the Mediterranean. Then, on the way from the Kola Peninsula and south, it stopped in the North Sea where it conducted a navy training exercise in the immediate vicinity of Norwegian offshore installations.

Personaly, I think its a wise move by the Syrians. They are upping the ante, probably with a view to securing a deal with Israel on the Golan..
With the USA and France now having Naval presence in the Gulf, perhaps the Russians need to look to Iran, Oman or Yemen for Port facilities..

KH..My point was that the Russians may look at signing official treaties and building a naval base.. Even the UAE allows US ships to dock and refuel at present..
Russia needs to have a "permanent presence" and will look at various options.
It is an interesting game and far from over..

Going back to the topic..
Since the breakup of the Soviet Union and with the background that Russia has to move the Black Sea Fleet from its Ukrainian port of Sevastopol, the Russians have been looking for alternatives.
theer were rumours a couple of years ago that Russia was negotiating to set up naval bases in the Syrian ports of Tartus and Latakia.
Perhaps now there is more urgency..

Makes sense for the Syrians to offer the Russians a base. Self preservation I guess. Reduces the chance of an attack from the US.
Keep hearing '...escalating tensions between the rest of the world community and Iran and by some of Iran’s activities,..'. I thought it was only US, israel and europe. Rest of the world community is more concerned about another US adventure in the middle east.

If you check the Rueters photos I posted it was the Chechnian special forces that made the biggest pushes in the battles in Georgia.
Conceivably.. looking at the demographics of Chechnya, most of those guys were Muslim.

As much as I love my country ...As much as I love my country I have to say in terms of the Mid east they need to be checked.
That's why I would hope to see a military base in Syria also. I think enough people have been bombed and shot in my lifetime. Without this base their time will come too.. Either by way of the US or Israel.
I don't have any love for the baathist or Assad but the people shouldn't have to suffer like they are in Iraq.

Ukraine would last about as long as Georgia against Russia. All they need is an excuse and they will prove it. Russia is itching for an excuse to attack them as it is. Don't doubt they will do it, everyone doubted they would attack Georgia and we see how that ended up.

The main advantage of NATO would be that there would be coordination. Leaving European nations to deal with Russia may not work..

I fail to see how Russia is ...I fail to see how Russia is weak when they have their own energy capabilities while America is dependant on other nations energy supplies to fight wars...
I fail to see how Russia is the weak nation when the country has zero national debt while America's is into the trillions....
Wait til the USD is worth as much as zimbabwe currency and no one will buy their debt and see how Russia has positioned themselves to be a quite powerful foe...

I believe, Russia has weaknesses on two fronts, which I am sure it will address..
Firstly, whilst I agree about the Sukhoi, overall, it is still a bit behind the Americans in Technology.
Secondly and the main problem to me is the overall sphere of influence in the World..America dominates here.
This why i belive Russia having a base in or around Syria and other places will be better in the long run..
