Salary so low and cost of living so high

askme's picture

I can see from various sources that in Qatar salary is very low, everyday they are trying to become more cheaper by hiring Indians, Nepali, Bangali and rest, where as I see room rent very high. I wonder how people are coping with that.

that's a question.......

Herein Qatar, living is getting tougher in terms of spending and expenditure. I always wonder where are we speeding to, the current situation needs urgent(like war time)attention from all the authorities concerned especially the Cabinet since i feel the present scenario seems like a financial turmoil is imminent(i am not monger)but taking into consideration of the changes after Asian Games2006 or months leading towards Games there is a considerable change in all walks of life.
Family Life especially of expatriates is in doldrums, the situation is getting worse i hope you get what i mean.
for eg. to get a shop space one has to pay Hundred Thousand Riyals to the owner apart from postdated cheques.
its well beyond the theory of Darwin"Survival of the Fittest"

i hope, i pray there would be some positive actions and changes......

I have seen the costs steadily rise since I have been here. I don't know how people with static pay can cope with it.

lovinni said people with meager wages ...

people with meager wages tend to sacrificed themselves. budgeting on their daily needs, other dont socialize anymore. add to it the rising transportation cost when you move around doha. others do extra jobs to add a little income. but such measure is not enough. its hard for people to look for new jobs due to release issues. and it sucks when you work on a private company because some employers dont care at all on employees' welfare.

But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,

'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

Oh.. very sad.. to know that you need sponsor’s permission to leave the job or country.

This is what I called as a Modern slavery.

If you are really fair, then let people decide whether they want to stay in Qatar or not. Rather than saying “If you don’t like get out of my country and yet you hold their passport or don’t give them freedom to leave the country…..”

Isn't it sound like hypocrisy? May Allah bless Muslim Ummah, before it becomes too late!

I can't speak for every country in the world, but I know of no impediment that an employer can use in Australia (where I'm from) to prevent someone from leaving, even if they have outstanding debts or obligations.

As far as I was aware, it was mainly the Gulf countries that prevent people from leaving without their sponsor's permission.

I'm also confused about the circumstances in which someone can leave without an exit permit. From what you're saying, someone without a contract and no debt can leave without permission. Does that extend to any foreign nationals other than those on tourist and visit visas? Or are you just saying that tourists can leave freely? (lucky them!)

janeyjaney's picture

janeyjaney said Amnesia.. I beg to disagree. ...

Amnesia.. I beg to disagree. Some employers even if the employee has finished and exceeded his term as stated on the signed contract, they still don't let them leave just as easy.

This still happens. Sadly.

Okay, one for amnesia. I don't have any contract with anybody! I am sponsored by a Qatari who is my friend. I have no debts and no criminal record. If I want to leave Qatar I have to go to my friend and he has to sign the exit permit, which he does. But I cannot leave without it.

rami-leb's picture

rami-leb said Rather than accusing Amnesia ...

Rather than accusing Amnesia of being a liar, do you think that perhaps he, like lots of Qatari nationals, have no idea what the ex-pats actually have to put up with and go through?

Some Qataris perhaps do genuinely believe that the ex-pats just like to complain, and that the sponsor system doesn't really exist, and we are just making it all up.

rami-leb's picture

rami-leb said Alexa ...

You shouldn't be so flippant in telling people to get an multiple exit visa.

Again... you need your sponsor's permission, and many sponsors are very reluctant to issue them.

MagicDragon - I was trying to look for the best in people... Occam's razor: Either Amnesia is saying this because he is unsure, or because he is lying. I would hope that it's the former.

I would really like to know just how much more Qataris actually know about the ex-pat visa conditions in their own country.

MagicDragon said Rami, I'm not sure if you ...

Rami, I'm not sure if you are serious. There is a UN report on "Modern Slavery", and it explicitly mentions the sponsorship system in the Gulf States as such a "Modern Slavery". Somebody must be totally disinterested or so self-contempt not to read this. And even more, "Not knowing" is no excuse!!!

amnesia said /-a-t-/magicdragon, Please ...

/-a-t-/magicdragon, Please don't call me a liar.

Call up the Ministry of Labour. Ask them about the legislation. If your contract has ended, you have no debt, you are free to leave.

You obviously don't know the different between going back home after quiting and an exit permit.

Employers don't 'let' them leave because the employers think that they can do that.

As for your other question, you are sponsored within the country which means that he has a duty to ensure that the person that he sponsors isn't a criminal. All he has to do is say that you have no debt, obligations or warrants on you.

But still, get this through your head. QUITTING A JOB and an EXIT PERMIT are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

So now, tell me where I am lieing?

Just in case there is any confusion I'll make it simple.

If you want to go no vacation, you need permission.

You want to go home after quiting, your contract has ended, you have no debt or obligations, you can leave, just call the Ministry of Labour if you face difficulties.

What's funny is that you all seriously don't even know your rights and then want to treat what you think you know as fact.

Go seek legal aid.

/-a-t-/senyorita, A Qatari needs approval to marry a non Qatari / GCC citizen. Not everyone.

Oh and by the way, I don't come and check every single thread I've posted on 24/7

Next time before calling someone a liar when they're trying to explain your rights and fighting to give, what seems to be, underserving people, more rights, how about you ask for clarification. Shame on you all.
