I am very moody today

i-moody's picture

Oh my god...

i never thought such a rich country like Qatar could have such bad roads pitted with so deep holes.

i never thought I would have to travel miles to find a birthday card.

i never thought i would have to rely on landmarks to go meet someone...addresses are unknown to people..no one knows where road is located.

i never thought i would have to travel miles to get a a baguette or a newspaper.

i never thought there are no postman here. If I want an address, I will have to have a postal box and go collect my letter myself.

i never thought i would have so much difficulties buying a car...no website give the price of new cars...except qatarsale.com and qatarliving.

why are some areas look like the 3rd world. Is there not any organised system here.

why do people seek insurance money walking in the middle of the roads. Why do they make small groups round corners and won't budge until you blow your horn? why are there not road markings in inside roads?

Oh my god, why did i leave my job and come here to work? i am so moody today....more than i usually am. hahaha.

Tell me, you expatriates from Europe or The States, how do you survive here? The only good thing i find here is the cost of petrol is way cheaper.

Share your thoughts please.

gerrit.booyens said Stop complaining ...

I lived in South Africa. All the roads are full of potholes. You sleep at nite with one eye open, inside a house that has more security than a jail, hoping that you will not be the one to die tonight.
People P in the streets, spit on the sidewalks, minnibus taxis push you from the road, and if you dare say something you either get shot, stabbed or accused of being a rasist.
Your kids are not save in school, as some other kid might stab him/her with a scissor or pen in the neck.
Outside the gate criminals are waiting to rob kids from their cellphones when they walk home.

When you go to work or the local shop in your car, you need to make sure no - one is watching you, as there is a very good chance that you will get hijacked and killed.

Your money is worthless, and poverty is worse than ever. The police are useless, as there is no money for patrol vehicles to get to crime scenes, or do do basic policing.

Some police officers are using their skills and weapons to head crime syndicates, and hijack , steal , murder, rape and cause havoc as they wish.

The government refer to SA as the rainbow nation, what a joke. The only color in this rainbow is red - red from the blood of the innocent 25 000 people murdered in sunny South Africa every year.
Government says everything is fine, and if you do not like what is happening, you can leave.
EVERY newspaper report EVERY day on murders , rapes and robberies that took place the previous day.

Do not complain about petty things, if you want something to complain about, go to South Africa. If you survive a week, you will have a reason to complain.

Geez, go away already. How many times do we have to suffer with expatriates whining about Qatar? Just so you know, this horse has been beaten to death, has been buried, then someone else comes along, digs it up and we have go go through it all over again. Do you realize how spoiled you sound?

I just got back from Vietnam and Cambodia and I saw stuff there I won't even tell you about...wait, I will: children/orphans living in the street, blind babies in orphanages with heads the size of watermelons, rooms of deformed children (from toxins - deaf/mute/vegetables) stacked three in a bed, mine victims (more children) walking around missing limbs. Shut up and count your blessings. ALL OF THEM would prefer to live here instead of eating garbage of the street.

Hi WitchStix
I have lived in South Africa for 32 years. I lived in Jo-burg, Mosselbay( will return any time) and lastly Durban.

The past 4 years were very bad. I honestly cannot promote SA for 2010, not with crime being the way it is.
Last week my Sister was robbed in brought daylite by 4 youths. The kicked her while on the floor, and simply walked away afterwords as if nothing happened.

And yes it really is soooo bad, why else are people leaving by the hundreds on a daily basis.

SA is my home, but I cannot wait to become a statistic, that is why I took my family and left.

How long where you in the Mother city for? Beautifull isnt it?

From one where few live on government freebies, hand-outs, benefits? What I moan about are basic things that such a rich country like this one cannot afford. Here on Fridays, you see thousands and thousands of labourers from the Industrial Area coming to the city for recreation. They, unintentionally, crowd the place just standing and talking in groups. I pity them. Even in some poorest quarters of some poor countries, there are parks and facilities for the poorest people. I have lived here only 4 months btw. One of you mentioned Cambodia or Vietnam. Does Cambodia or Vietnam has the same GDP as this country? May be in your Cambodia you did not have a proper road to drive on or had to walk. That person had better shut up and compare likes with likes before he/she hurled abuse at me. Some say to check before landing here. I wish I was lucky to find enough info. Some websites are just crap. www.justlanded.com..... give wrong info.I wish I knew about QL before.

The point is that your sad cuz Qatar is not what you expected. It just goes to show that the grass is not always greener.

I kept moaning about britain and how great california was.. but now that I am back I sing a different tune. Just outside of one of my mothers Hotels in san francisco you'll run into loads of homeless people sleeping on the street. Crazies with no sense!

My first thoughts were why isn't there a better social system here in the states to take care of these people? And why don't people like kids? Why are they so loud and rude?

Now I would wish for anything to be back in britain rather than California. And I promise you I am enjoying the best first class america has to offer.

i wish i could go...I signed the contract already....try become an xpat yourself in a country where you dont get the basic facilities you take for granted and are used to in your home country(for example finding Halal meat or a mosque...) then you'll find the answer to your question.

the question: "how do you survive...." means how the rest of expatriates overcome these problems....i was looking for their advice. btw there is nothing special with expatriates except that their skills are needed by those companies that are developing the place.

My question was addressed to european and american expatriates. I guess by your name, you must be from outside Europe or America. So my question was not directed at your audience.

and finally, i dont need your patronising me. thank you.

Qatar is a rich country, so you have to compare it with the rich countries, not poor like Vietnam or Cambodia. Apples with apples, pears with pears...
Qatar has so much money, however, if you compare it with the European or North American countries, well...it's far behind. Almost everything is undeveloped, i-moody is right. Let's take taxi service, for example. Oh, my God, always late: in a good case for 5-10 min, in a worth - 40 minutes!!! If you don't have your own car, it's almost impossible to be somewhere on time! Those limousines drivers...Not really reliable, don't know word "on time"...The Health system is pretty well though.

Sorry to say it, but people here who are not Qatari citizens or who are not from Europe or North America have no manners!!! - their driving is rude and dangerous, they tend to cheat in the lines for something, they are messy, they leave tones of garbage after picnics in the park or on the beach, so wild beautiful beaches are all covered with leftovers...
Look at the european, american parks!!! People there clean after themselves...
That's my and all my friends' impression.

Ok some of the comments here are just bbad people..How can u guys be so ungrateful?! If u come to a foreign country from Europe or America, there you have the choice whether you stay or leave. Life is good enough there for people to make an informed choice, they can chose. Compare that to someone from Zimbabwe or Iraq where just about anywhere else is better than what they are coming from. When you move countries, there are obviously going to be obstacles you are going to have to overcome.
When I lived in ENgland, rubbish was often not collected becuase the local city council was apparently so underfunded (considering the amount of council tax they took from us I'd love to know where that went). And yes things may seem "a little strange" here compared to back home, but if u really want your home comforts exactly how they are in your home country go back home. It's really simple, and just becuase you signed a contract is no excuse. Stop slagging off Qataris - they aren't perfect, but are you surprised they may start to hate foreigners when all we do is bitch and whine about our tax free salaries, and if we're american/european free housing and god knows how many other perks?
