Why people get a bad impression of Qataris
There have been numerous posts on the pro and con side of peoples impression of Qataris. I would like to start by saying I have been here more than 10 years and love it here, country, culture and people.
To clarify a bit, a lot of people are saying they hate it here and the locals are rude and one poster even said "ignorant and arrogant". I disagree whole heartedly, and with that sid let me tell you what happened to me this morning.
I was waiting for parking in City Center, signal on and all to have one Qatari man zoom into my parking. I usually dont get upset at this as what goes around comes around but I had my infant with me and was going to get my weekly shopping. The parking was beside the door and I thought I hit the jackpot. I blew the horn thinking maybe he didnt see me (yeah right) and he parked. I got out to ask him why he did it and he shooed me away like a fly. I told him I would call the police and he again shooed me away with a bit of a chuckle. So happens the police came, he left and they asked me what was wrong. I explained and the police told me outright "THIS IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE HE IS QATARI!!!" and that I could go and complain to the police maybe they would help me.
I think when Qataris come to our countries to vacation they are subject to the same rules and such as the rest of us. Had he been Indian, Canadian, American or any of the other hundreds of nationalities here in Qatar I could have got some help, but because he is Qatari I am out of luck.
You will say it is just parking but how many times should I be shooed away like I am not worth as much as they are? This is not the general populations fault, this is the police.
Before I get posts saying "all the fingers on your hand arent the same" and "One person is not everyone" know that I am fully aware of that and agree, but if the police have a seperate set of rules for us based on nationality what hope do any of us have at ever beeing treated with an ounce of respect in these instances.
Sorry for the long post, just had to vent.

well, it is better to let it ...well, it is better to let it all out rather than just let them all pile up inside of you...anger management, i should say.. maybe the reason why they are always getting the bad impression is mainly because of how they act.. i'm not saying that all of them, just some, act thinking as if they rule the world.. well, true, this is their country, but respect has to be both ways... :)

Last month one of my friends Car got a minor scratch in the parking, A piece of papper with a pohne No. in Arabic as well as in English were fixed under the Wiper. When he called up, one Qatary guy responded and came next day to his house and gave him QR 2000 for repair (actual cost of the repair will be Qr200) and offered him watever he spent over and above QR2000..
This kind of honesty is very hard to find..

You will get jerks in all nationalities... but the integral point here is that they are not just being jerks (and I again stress it is a very select few) but treating expatriates as inferiors and it is reinforced by law. Thats the point.

Amoud, what goes around ... ...I was once cut up by a Saudi in Riyadh turning left from the right lane as I was turning left. It had just finished raining and there was that nice clean smell in the air. The street we were on had a nasty dip half way down that always fills with water to about 50cm deep. Now, I have a Patrol - this water didn't bother me. The Saudi had a red Cadillac with white leather upholstery, and he had on his white thobe. He also had his window down, taking in that clean air smell ... you can see it coming can't you ... The bow wave I created through the puddle went into his car... Oh how I laughed the last laugh :o)

yeah its the police, it ...yeah its the police, it happened to me few days back when me and 3 others got into the wrong road and we were caught by a traffic petrol they were 2, they ordered all of us to park our cars and gather around their police vehicle. we did. the police man started collecting our licenses and checking our nationality, it happened that one of us was Bengali, the Police man really talked so rudely to the Bengali guy that i was astonished.
i guessed one guy was an arab, other Pakistani and I, he didnt said a word to us, after he melted his anger on the Bengali guy, he handed our licenses to us and tell us not to come back there.
what i was wondering was how racist that the police man treated the Bengali.

Not that I don't wanna be a racist or something... ...But just this morning a driver who wears a usual Arabic white gown for men within his 30's-40's (don't wanna mention it was a Qatari coz maybe he isn't) took me for a ride to the office and thought he'll help me out or wanna be a friend to me.
Suddenly he touched my arm (I was sitting beside him) and said 'I like you and I wanna fcuk you.' I told him I'm not gay. He respond 'I can give you money'. I suddenly told a lie that I was married and I don't wanna bring a memorable shame to my wife and my 2-year old son back home. It only took that words to convince him to stop doing this coz he doesn't even care if I was gay or not...He brought me down about 7 kilometers from my pickup point not near to my office so I have to ride another to get there.
Maybe because I have a fair complexion and Asian.
And this was like the 5th time I had this encounters here in Qatar...and only 1 out of 6 of their same description was a good one that really helped me brought home when I can't get a ride at 1am in the morning from Corniche.
It's just that...they keep on doing this. Why?

I could write you a million stories like this from the 10+ years I have been here and I got the same reply to those as I did this one. I got it when the woman from Hamad hospital was making fun of me on the phone, when I said I would complain she told me "What can you do to me, I am Qatari, go complain" .... I got it when a guy hit me in a parking lot because I wasnt moving from the parking fast enough for him.... I got it when I was being called on the phone 3-4 times a night after midnight by a local woman and her brother asking me to meet them in their house.... Always told to just let it be, forget it..... and to clear the "maybe they werent Qataris" arguement, each time I was told this by the police who checked it out. I think the system here is sooo flawed. Peopple will do what they can get away with, and to be honest it is humiliating to be violated in some way only to be told my nationality is not as worthy as someone elses, or that "Hey, this person can treat you like crap because he holds a red passport"
