Poor connection speeds on DSL from Qtel?

has this been happening to you all the time or just recently?I thought it might have been a problem with my wireless router.

This has been happening to me just recently.. I made myself believe that there's something wrong w/ the wires which connects the wireless router. Apparently I'm wrong.

LMAO /-a-t-/ powersupply problem. Strong denial of crappy service. I remember once for literally two month my net was not working and the guys in Qtel would give me various reasons at to why my net was not working, I told them send a guy over but they were hesitant to until I forced them too, and guess what the problem was? They never activated my account in the first place!

Same Here, minimum of 3 to 4 disconnection a day snail pace speed connection for the past week. I thought it's my wireless router and I'm about to get a new router on sale. hhhmmm.....

my connection also stops about 930 pm until 1030p. and sometimes anytime of the day. i wonder why... i was tempted to change the router also but could be qtel problem. they already fix it about 3 months ago but same thing happens.

I too was wondering. I too have been getting slow speed from internet. I have 1MB at home and my router seems to get only 156kbps of speed. I thought my router was busted, re-programmed, reset all the settings and still the same. Qtel from the other side says... its perfectly fine. When I told them the problem is still the same they complain that get a software engineer to sort out my router problem.lol..

My friend too has his wirless router switched on for 2 years non stop and now for some reason its does not show a DSL connection, we bought another one and still the same.

I checked else where they both seem to work perfectly fine.. Strange but true.. They seem to send the bills on time what about all those days lost?

After all Qtel motto goes: "Lets Dis-Connect" lol

greentea..that explains each time i call overseas they cant hear me. no matter how i say hello but their voices are clear.

Qtel bills are on time even though connection gets busted for a week or you dont fully utilize it 24 hrs.

Ok this is a regular problem? Is Q-tel the ony internet service provider? Shucks I'll be working from home when I come to Doha and I need to be connected to the internet for the major part of the day or at least during core working hrs. Now this is going to be a problem. Do we need to use the wireless router provided by Q-te itself? Can we configure it ourselves or will they do it for us? What if I decide not to use wireless and switch to wired modem? Is it any better then?

someonenew - Don't worry, I work from home over the internet all day and the connection is sufficient enough. Even when we shared a connection with other apartments in a tower block it was ok.

And you can use any router you want once you have the qtel username and password.

I don't think you can get more than 1Mbps for residential lines, so I'd go for that.

me too... me too... I have the highest option and everytime it disconnects from my wireless router. I don't know if it's because of the router or connection.

But infairness, it's fast like a running horse...

1.) maybe u have 512K, it's slow for sure,plus 4-5 PC are connecting, it's usual.

2.) even if you have 2mb make sure that your wireless router has a password (different from the Qtel password) which is exclusively for the users only. Coz if not, maybe all of your neighbors are sharing with you that's why you have very poor speed.

Our internet connection is fast enough, we are using linksys wireless and we are very sure that it is fully secured by password.

chevydjak... for ur information ther are tools online that can crack any password of a wireless conncetion. The best would be to use a wired connection if u want security that is.

I was so sure at one point that my neighbour was piggy-backing my connection that I change the password 3 times in one week!

First, same problem with speed of internet - early morning was good enough, but later on started to go very slow - maybe like 20-30% of my actual speed (2MB), so it would seem that maybe the total bandwidth of Qtel has troubles handling the number of users...
Second, the wireless protection needs to be on 3 levels, 1 MAC address restriction - so nobody but your PCs or laptops can get there, 2nd, password or key to connect and 3rd - encryption of the traffic so passwords cannot be captured. If anyone can crack these 3 levels, then let them do it and enjoy the service :D

Cable cut hits mobile service

QTEL’S mobile phone service was disrupted in several areas in Doha yesterday as some six fibre optic cables were “accidentally cut” by road maintenance contractors working between Al Jazeera Academy and Abu Hamour petrol station.
As a result, hundreds of mobile phone users in the city could not make or receive calls for a considerable time since noon.
Sources said the areas badly affected included Bin Mahmoud, Al Sadd, Mamoura and Muntaza.
A Qtel spokesman confirmed the service disruption in south and west Doha, which was caused due to the “severe damage” to the fibre optic cables.
He said: “Our special response team is now working to repair the damage. We hope to restore the service in a few hours,” he said.
Qtel said last night the breach was detected at 3.05pm and the service provider’s emergency response team was immediately sent to the area.
Qtel said it was able to “divert phone and data traffic to other switches in its network while the team successfully installed a temporary cable to manage the flow of network traffic in the area.
“Because six distinct cables were breached, including back-up cables, some disruption occurred across voice and data services.”
Service was gradually restored throughout the afternoon, and full capacity was expected to be back by the evening.
Qtel executive director (Group Communications) Adel al-Mutawa said: “Qtel’s emergency response team demonstrated their effectiveness with their swift response to the problem and the restoration of communication services to our customers. However, such disruption is avoidable and we would remind all contractors working in Qatar of the importance of liaising with Qtel’s engineers to avoid such problems occurring in the future.”
Qtel co-ordinates with contractors by providing layout maps and blueprints, as well as having engineers on-site, to avoid disruption to cable networks during building and maintenance work.
“Contractors who do breach cabling systems can be held legally responsible,” he said.

heero, they do here. I lived in several parts of Doha, and in many cases the telephone cable came from a high post, went through a hole in the roof and down.
