Give locals a chance
Time and again I come across hard working Bahrainis who are forced to leave their jobs. It is sad that due to the easy availability of expatriates, Bahrainis are not given the importance it deserves. They are forced to work for lower salaries.
They are made to work for extra hours and work more than their job requires. Today, expatriates come to the Middle East to make some quick money, so they do not mind having to work extra hours as most of them do not have families here.
They do not mind working more as otherwise they will be asked to leave the job. Expat labour is ready to take on the extra task for the salary they get and they leave after they have made their money, but in the process they destroy the lives of Bahrainis.
They are either forced to quit their jobs or move to other countries where the conditions are better. I have come across so many qualified individuals who are jobless because either employers are not ready to pay a decent salary or they make them work extra hours and burden them with additional duties.
Labour Ministry should decide salaries according to company profile and candidate profile, with yearly renewal of salaries. This will force employers to employ more locals than expatriates. Give your people a chance.!

A load of old tosh !! The jobs are there, but like other Arab countries, they locals dont want to do it, as they think its beneath them.
And i personally hate having to work longer than i get paid for.

I don't know MP. A country does need 2 protect it's own citizens ......the point about having families here is a valid one!

You are on a roll this morning Mr. Paul :) ...So what is it - I've heard both sides of this story:
expatriates make too much money and don't put in the hours.
expatriates will work for peanuts and work a 60 hour week.
So which is it???
My opinion is I make good money for a skill that I am uniquely qualified for and I work hard for every penny of it. Hence why I have the job.
MR PAUL said
Tweety, look around ya.How many locals do ya see ...doing all the manual labour jobs ?
Like you, i too work in a skill for which i have 10 years experience.
Yer cant just start at the top, ya have to work hard to get there first.

Tweetybird.. ...This argument was also used in Saudi to some extent..
One way of looking at it is that employers DO SOMETIMES "abuse" expatriates, especially the lower paid jobs.. They make them work long hours and force them to do tasks with the threat of sacking if they don't comply...
Let's say an Indian salesman is forced to work split shifts and 48 hours a week. The Bahraini would not want to do that..

I hear ya Mr. Paul. I ...I hear ya Mr. Paul. I certainly put in my lumps at not so great a pay to get experience and where I am in my career. Most of us start at the bottom of our career ladder and crawl our way up. And that is how it should be. I've learned way more on the job than I ever did in any University classroom.

They should just expel all ...They should just expel all expatriates and leave Bahrainis in peace...especially this Mr. Paul dude :P
Mr. Paul there's this Qatarization principle here...is there nothing like it in Bahrain? At the end of the day a State has a duty to ensure the well being of its people.

Labda, they have Bahraini-ization here. But the truth is ...if the people dont want to do those jobs, then they wont.

True Mr. Paul. And there's ...True Mr. Paul. And there's always someone "hungry" (whether literally or professionally) enough to want those jobs.

MP.. ...Its not that they don't want to do these jobs..
They want to do these jobs , but with different rules..

I'm with britexpat on this ...There's still a big difference on how a local does the work and how an expatriate does the work.

Heero_yuy2.. ...Ten years ago, Saudis pooh poohped the idea of low paid jobs..
Now they are working as security guards, secretaries, Taxi Drivers..
Change takes time, but happens eventually..

But the nice thing about it was ......their laws enable them to 'participate' in daily activities that doesn't usually make them stay at home sipping hookah. Also has a good side for the women...except I was expecting more women wearing abayas to take part of our office work. Gives them more exposure to the world.
Maybe it will take time, but I pray it sums them up to good intentions and understanding the meaning of the work they done.

Well, now ramadan is upon us, the non muslim expatriates will have ...to do more work, for the same pay.

Heero, i understand and respect that fully. ...But if ya read the article..." They are made to work for extra hours and work more than their job requires."
If they are unwilling to work like this normally, then during ramadan, it will be doubly harder for them, but business has to go on.Or all companies could give all staff the same working hours.

I posted something about ramadan fasting related to this ......about the 'work strength' while fasting.
They are made to work for extra hours and work more than their job requires.
Yes, they do. But what an expat can do 4 of job works in around 8 hours, a local can do 1 in 16 hours...
I dunno if they're taking advantage of being a local or they just don't wanna learn the way of the world...

I don't live in Qatar but ...I don't live in Qatar but this subject is often used by any country nationalists to gather votes, but national citizens end up doing same jobs but earning a lot more than in their own country.
When the Berlin wall was destroyed a lot of Eastern europeans came to the west to work and took the jobs that the nationals never wanted and they received less than nationals doing the same, like housekeeping or in constructions.
This situation happens all over the world.
