Chicago deaths higher than Iraq

britexpat's picture

Some 65 American soldiers were killed in Iraq between the start of the Memorial Day weekend on 26 May and the end of the summer on Labour Day, 1 September.
However, 123 people were shot and killed in Chicago over the same period, a study revealed yesterday.

Not exactly the cost of one year's worth of war in Iraq. As well as the tragedy of the lives lost, billions of dollars are spent/wasted on 'defence' (depends how you look at it)

Now if only all that money would be spent on healthcare or poverty in the US. That would really be awesome.

First of all, I'm still tryin to figure out the significance of this comparison. Can anyone help me?

Second, the figure of 65, is the no.of American soldiers who died in Iraq and not the total no.of deaths in Iraq in that time. Now, when u talk abt US soldiers in Iraq, they know and anticipate trouble and do everything possible to protect themselves, whereas the various killings across Chicago, I am quite sure, happened when the victims where least xpecting it.

I dont get the point in comparing armed personnel fatalities in one part of the world to civilian casualties in another part (even if both are citizens of the same country)? Is it to say that for an average US citizen, being a soldier in Iraq is safer than being a resident of Chicago? Bit too farfetched if u compare the percentages, no?

(Maybe my processor is runnin a bit slow today...shud go n catch some sleep, i guess ;)....)

If that were true then countries with strict gun control laws would have the same number of deaths as those with weak, and that's just not true.

Purchasing a gun should not be as easy as walking into your local K-Mart and picking out a semi-automatic rifle.

And Guns do offer a "detachment" from the killing, that makes it easier to kill people.
