The Philippines’ Top 20 Universities

tatess's picture

What is really the best gauge to determine the performance of a university? Is it facilities? Amount of money received in grants? Number of alumni who go on to become presidents/senators/congressmen?

While there are any number of criteria to consider in ranking any group of schools, a survey by Philippine Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) assessed university performance by looking at graduates of the same programs.

The joint study, published in 2005, looked into the performance of Philippine universities in the various national board examinations. The study ranked the universities based on the average passing in the national board examinations of all courses from 1999 to 2005.

The top 20 schools in the country, based on this criteria are:

1. University of the Philipines-Diliman
2. University of Santo Tomas
3. Saint Louis University, Baguio City
4. University of the Philippines-Los Banos
5. Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan)
6. Ateneo de Davao University
7. Ateneo de Manila University
8. Silliman University
9. University of San Carlos
10. Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Tech
11. University of the Philippines-Manila
12. De La Salle University-Manila
13. Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila
14. University of the Cordilleras(Formerly Baguio Colleges Foundation)
15. University of Negros Occidental-Recolectos
16. Mindanao State University-Gen Santos City
17. Polytechnic University of the Philippines
18. Mapua Institute of Technology
19. Central Mindanao University
20. Adamson University

What is encouraging to me about this list is the presence of many schools that are located outside Manila. Gone are the days when scholastic excellence existed only in the capital region. Mindanao is well-represented, as are the Visayas and Cordillera regions. Students no longer have to go to Manila in order to have a world-class education. These students are more likely to stay in their home region, and in the long run, contribute to its development.

The basis of this list is obviously not the only one that can be used to compare schools to one another. It is also not the most comprehensive or objective. Given a different set of criteria, this list could be different. In the end, we don’t really want only one “best” university, do we?

but let me say our school have stong courses especially engineering and commerce. although not all prof give the quality education. reality po...yung iba by negotiations po and grades. sa facilities naman nakaka update ang school kaya medyo may kamahalan ang tuition fee.

overall, proud ako to be an alumni...

for me i think this list is quite unfair.. how about schools that is not a university status.. i mean schools that are offering limited courses only..

my alma mater should definitely not to be ranked on the 18th. we are the only school on the list that is on institute status..we are only offering engineering courses..

meaning, if the PRC will just rate the school accdg to the board passers, definitely the no. of students on diff. courses will be directly proportional to the passing rate..

higher no. of courses offered means higher no. of students resulting to a higher no. of examinees which means higher no. of passing rate...

haha.. sorry for being paranoid.. wala lang magawa sa office..hehe.. the real thing is, wala sa school yan..nasa tao yan..

Basta para sa akin, Diskarte Universty ang No. 1. Walang enrolment fee walang thesis thesis. OJT kaagad!

What I'm saying is, it's not always school & academics that moves society forward. In the real mighty world, it's always the one who has street smarts, not diploma, that opens up opportunities for themselves! Pero yung diploma importante din as facade. Pero syempre, hollow core ang dating mo kung may diploma ka nga pero ang-ang ka naman sa kapaligiran.

For as long as you understand the dynamics of your job, you're good to go! At syempre, ang mas importante sa bansa natin ay hindi lang quality ng education, mas kailangan ng marami ang quality at quantity ng trabaho.

perception does matters. Kung ano ung the first thing that will come into mind usually prevails. It is still widely (and wildly) prevalent sa bansa natin un discrimination when it comes to graduates of a certain school. Which for me is really unfair to other not-so-known schools.

I've learned to contribute something by giving equal opportunities to graduates of Engineering schools whether it comes from my alma mater of not. It's the knowledge gains, not school affiliation.

Tama si dmigtysolomon, discriminatory and mga companies sa Pinas when choosing job applicants. They will say "Graduates from La Salle or Ateneo is preferred". Although meron naman silang right to choose their employees pero, the class of school doesn't always guarantee quality students.
