Police whip men at Souqs

William Boot's picture

The Gulf Times reports that some men have been beaten by police at the souqs yesterday. From the article, it seems that victims are being chosen by race.

ASIAN bachelors were beaten with whips and even kicked during a heavy-handed police operation to prevent them from entering Doha’s popular souq areas yesterday. Several encounters, witnessed by Gulf Times, saw Heritage Police Officers using stick-like instruments to herd labourers away from cordoned areas along Grand Hamad Avenue. When one officer was asked why such force was being used he replied: “They are not allowed inside this family area.” He then explained that whips were being employed “because they do not understand”.

I went to Villaggio yesterday after I read the piece in The Peninsula about the first three days of Eid being designated "Family Days". As I walked without hindrance into the mall alongside other Western and Gulf Arab men, two Filipinos were being turned away. Outside, dozens of Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan men seemed pretty miserable at being denied entrance. It seemed to me at least that the security guards were preventing access based on race.

Most Western expatriates and Gulf Arabs I talked to yesterday about the segregation were in favour of the policy. One English woman complained that last year, a group of men had stared at her in Villaggio, and it had made her uncomfortable. Another woman said that she thought a man had taken a photo of her last Eid, and "Who knows what he would be doing with the image." To be honest, I didn't think she was particularly attractive, but everyone has different tastes.

Many of the men I spoke with felt sorry for those at the brunt of the policy, but felt helpless to intervene. "It's not our country. If you don't like it, you don't have to live here."

Well here's what I've done. This morning, I wrote a letter to my pension provider, explaining the apparent policy at Villaggio and City Centre, and asking them whether they invest in Carrefour. I've said that if they invest in the company, I will be switching pension provider to one who does not. I've copied Carrefour on the mail.

Here's their email address if anyone else feels like it might do some good: groupecarrefour/-a-t-/eurorscg.fr

I admire your stand William - but I think your target is incorrect. I doubt Carrefour have much to do with the policies in force. The malls aren't managed by the supermarket, and whoever does manage them are probably only acting on instructions from a higher level.

The local firms don't care, but Carrefour's board will go ape-shit as soon as any hint of racism is levelled against them. They have huge investments in India, and a few people writing to pension providers can make a difference to investment decisions.

Carrefour is French. These people are DUMB and could care less about racialism. They certainly dont give a merde about quality of products and even less customer services. When i was eating (standing-since the tables are all occupied)nearby a family table, the father shooed me away. damn it. I was really pissed off man. Before that incident I already noticed him with his wife talking and staring at me like im a criminal or some hideous-faced creature about to devour them (wish I could). I wanted to shove the food into his mouth man. Imagine you're just eating and relaxing and suddenly someone treats u like that. How racist these people are. Well, the point is not about bachelors and families. Its about RACISM.

LifeisBeautiful said I am in favour of this policy ...

Thios might sound stupid but I actually support it. I'am from India and I can vouch that this policy does more good than bad to the bachelors from the sub continent. It's better to be denied access than to be branded lechers in public. The problem is,we people from the subcontunent love to stare at women and if given a chance we would actually scan them from head to toe. It about the attitude. I feel disgusted whenevr I see people from the subcontinent in groups standing in one corner coz they dont have the balls to go and shop and stare at women of every nationality as if they are aliens. Lets accept the fact - Most of our people dont go to the malls for shopping;they go for having a good time starting at the females of different races. 'Look at that chick','Wow look at that a**' and similar other expressions are very common and popular in these circles. If you want to test the validity of what I'am saying you juist have to go to the souqs and find it for your self.:ook at what these 'bachelors' have made out of these shopping places. They actually behave like retards if they see a girl and mind you the girl doesn't even have to be well endowed. They would pick on anyone. It's quite embarassing being a fellow citizen.Specially men from India,Pakistan and Bangladesh act as if they haven't seen a female in generations. Quite shameless I would say. If I had a family I would definately not want my women folks to be subjectedto the Xray eyes of these stupid men. They even make comments most of the times in there language. Agreed that there are Egyptian and Arabs who also do the same but I haven't noticed such blatant behavior from them. And also, these 'bans' are oly on special occassions. So why complain. It's THEIR country and they have all the right to decide what policy they want. It's these 'bachelors' who should change their attitude.

I think you will find that the real issue the malls have with 'batchelors' is not particularly that they stare at women (for gods sake girls get used to it), or intimidate families or behave badly, its the simple fact that the majority of these guys, and for batchelors read labourers, do not spend money in the vastly overpriced oulets that make up the majority of the stores.

Capitalism, rather than racism, is the main factor at play here I think.

I have never been stopped. The only time was on a Thurs or Friday night(11pm) when one of our Sri Lankin companions was ordered to go a different route out of Souq Waqif (so he didn't walk past the outdoor cafes) by a tourist police officer, when we (white guys) inquired why, we were told "it's not a problem, it's a mistake, carry on"

if you or your wife are angry about being stared at it sounds like you are walking around the mall waiting for someone to stare so that you can pounce on them. is your life really that boring? why aren't you engaged in conversation with your wife? if you don't walk around looking at them to check whether they're staring, they won't look at you...it's that simple.

if your wife is covered AbuAmerican, i imagine that they are staring because it's quite unusual to see a white male with a covered female but i could be wrong.

does this mean that if I as a white western female complain about Arab and Western men staring at me that they will be banned too...because as lifeisbeautiful says, men seem to have this in-built urge to check out women. however, i would not limit this to men from the subcontinent only...

we have actually banned our students from entering with mobile phones with cameras as they were taking photos of female students. we do not have any asian bachelors studying with us...so go figure!

so, what can be done to help? it would be more useful if we could come up with a solution. these people come here believing that they will have a good job, earn money to send home and to be able to live life as normal. do you think they would come here if they knew the real situation? do you not think that they would leave the country if they were allowed to?

I really appreciate your concerns for these 'bachelors' and I wonder how many of us really think as progressively as you guys do. MD,giving a 'Family Status' has a huge financial implication for the companies which hire these 'bachelors'. As a matter of fact, most compaies hire them coz they are cheaper than the married ones. The Emploment Offers of these man necessarily states 1. The Salary/Package and 2. Terms and Conditions wnich specify the rules governing their employment. I say why don't these men give a serious thought to everything before they decide to land up in a job. The point is,it's not their 'single' status which makes them do things to irritate them. It's just the culture and lack of disciplie in their home countries. Believe me,I have seen a lot of staring, commenting, grabing etc. to understand where the problem is. I'm an Indian and I'am proud to be one. It's just that fair is fair. Indian Bachelors need to mend their ways before they cry foul. It's just that they take freedom for granted and take indiscipline to the highest levels. We really deserve to get our butts kicked on that front. You just have to visit one of the metros in India to understand my frustration.
That said,Qatar authorities also need to understand that there is something called the Human Rights and that they are dealing with Normal People with emotions and feelings like themselves. Whipping and pushing can cause momentary discipline but it will not help in the long term.

The issue of westerners and arabs staring at women is not as big a problem as the oe with the people from subcontinent and egyptians. That's my honest two cent.

i lived in nepal for nearly 3 years and travelled to india many times and was not approached or stared at as many times as i have been here by arabs and/or westerners as they seem to think it is their right to do so as i'm white and obviously used to it/can take it. they would never dare do that to a Qatari woman. and guess what, i survive being stared at. i still have two legs, arms, both eyes, ears etc and am fit and healthy so is it really the end of the world?

however, you're talking about Indians and maybe that's the difference. maybe Indians are as you say, "take freedom for granted and take indiscipline to the highest levels." such a huge generalisation to make about your own countrymen...I guess that patriotism is stronger where i come from!

i think your facts are wrong as well...all of the nepalis that we know here who are employed by the same companies you are talking about are married. there is no difference in their pay depending on marital status.

lifeisbeautiful you say "I say why don't these men give a serious thought to everything before they decide to land up in a job"...do you honestly think that manpower agents or the companies tell the men the working conditions? do you really think that the companies/agencies target people who are well-educated and can read/write to offer them jobs as a labourer? do you really think that they are given a contract in a language that they can read? do you think that all of them can read and have any idea what they are signing? do you really think that they are allowed to dispute anything that is different once they arrive? if you do, then the mind boggles and it's not worth discussing anymore. it would be of more use for you to go onto an Indian forum and tell people what they're getting into when they accept a job here...

cross-dressing may be one solution but do you think they can afford to buy an abaya?!

I applaud you.

you wrote at great length and in a reasoned and articulate manner, if I may can I shorten it to....

It is racist and wrong!

"Deaths in the Bible. God - 2,270,365
not including the victims of Noah's flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, or the
many plagues, famines, fiery serpents, etc because no specific numbers
were given. Satan - 10."

Cammy's picture

Cammy said because... ...

when the ministry officials interview the workers, they are under pressure to say that everything is ok. anyone who has spoken out where my husband works has then been dismissed and deported. despite having c*** jobs, most of the workers have sold their land/houses to come and work here. can you imagine having to go back home and explain to your family that you made a mistake of that magnitude?

the sad thing is that they could now be earning the same amount of money in their own countries if they were working the same hours as here...

what would you do if you were asked by someone and risked deportation and come from a very passive nation. also, the paperwork doesn't match up as workers are told to sign in but not sign out. therefore everything looks above board...this is true of the case i know but might not apply in other situations...

I know this sounds pathetically facile, but if I (as a blonde) feel I'm being stared at I simply avert/drop my eyes. Problem solved. Now if someone were to make a grab for me that would be a different matter. They'd find themselves on the floor with my boot in the back of their neck. I make a distinction between my problem and someone else's.

corleone said i could probably draw some ...

i could probably draw some strained comparison between these bachelors and the whipping boys who used to be part of the king's courts in England. They're being whipped for no fault of their own, but for somebody else's faults.

The same way as the whipping boys were whipped mercilessly when the young princes skipped lessons, or for whatever mischief they committed.

baldrick2dogs said Racism rules! ...

As a bachelor, I went to Salam Stores this morning. As a bachelor I was welcomed into the place by the guards. As a bachelor I spent over 3 grand on a new camera lens and camera bag .... that is where the difference lies, and that, unfortunately, is why some bachelors get better treatment than others. It sucks, but it's life.

How can this country progress with this kind of apartheid going on?
Eid is the time for all to enjoy and spend time together. How can this government turn a blind eye to this injustice towards "bachelors" who worked hard to build this country?

As long as there are stupid people like 'life is beautiful' around, I guess this will go on.
