Fifty Dirhams Robbery
"Sir do you have fifty dirhams coin?" A question often asked by the cashier girl at Lulu hyper apparently to even out the change due to shortage of coins??? Then if you don't, they give you those cheap candies as your change. Daylight robbery anyone? I mean, if they can't give a .50 change, they should count it off as a discount or give you a .50 voucher. Giving you the candy is clearly forcing you to buy an item that you don't need.
Okay .50 is peanuts to you but imagine doing this to a thousand other shoppers in a day? Man, it can very well pay off someone's salary there!
So next time you shop there, do this. If your bill is for example QAR.100.50, & the cashier asks for .50 & they can't produce your .50 change, pay only QAR.100 & don't accept the candy as your change. This is grand-scale robbery!

i emphatize with what you feel, ron_ona ...But if you insist that you don't want those candies, they cant force you to...I always refuse to accept it...so they have no choice but to give you your exact change...

There's a funny story about it... ...Indian supermarket(along airport road) always give out candies/gums for the 50 dirhams change.
One day, my officemate went to the store earlier that day and went the 2nd time at lunchtime with us and still have that gum/candy in his pocket. So when the cashier gave another candy, my friend pulled out the candy/gum from his pockets, gave it to the cashier to make it even...
We all laughed...coz the cashier stared at us confused and ACCEPTED the candy anyway....lol
maybe that could work...

Most Indian shopkeepers... ......have been converting candies & gums into currency! The only way to stop this is to speak up & avoid being taken for a ride. Refuse the candies & demand for your change. Ibibigay naman nila yun pero yun lang kung nakakaisa sila.

lagi kong iniiwan... ...ang kendi/chocolates kapag wala silang maibigay na .50 dirhams sa akin..
but after reading this post, i guess i have to think twice now and demand for my .50 dirhams, oo nga naman pagkulang tayo ng .50 dirhams hindi sila papayag at kailangan natin na ibigay ang exact total amount, pero pag sila ok lang na bigyan tayo ng kendi... hmmm... not fair huh!

Hehehe ...I always pay by credit card, that way if it's 123.45, that is exactly what I pay :o)
BTW, when I closed my HSBC account, even they didn't have coins to pay me in full and I never got candy from them instead!!!

Charanmafiriyals missed the point. ...Charanmafiriyals you didn't get the point here. Its not about the measly amount .50 Dirhams we're talking about. Its about the practice which have already bordered into robbery... Hey I could walk into any small store & buy all their inventory in a wink, but don't give me Batook gum for my change!
Again again again, we should not let these crooked merchants get away with it, no matter the amount is. The sum of their thievery is worth their hand...in the basket.
