Arabs celebrate 1973 victory over Israel
In an interview to the Egyptian Armed Forces newspaper, Mubarak insisted the need to maintain the "spirit of October" so that the country can move forward economically and socially. The "Spirit of October" is, after all, national unity and among Arab states, that was also published yesterday in the official Syrian newspaper. In the editorial, the daily Tishrin launched an appeal to all Arabs in the region to join, "as they did 35 years ago," and they may achieve its objectives. And, recalling what is involved in the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors, nodes: "Even the prime minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, said that there will be no peace with Damascus unless all the territories are returned."
Since 1973 that every year, Egypt and Syria mark the date as having been a victory of their armies over Israel. And it was, in psychological terms: the first 48 hours ended up dominated by the advance in the north of the Syrian forces and in the south, the Egyptian forces. Wanting to avenge the humiliation that Israel had made the move in the Six-Day War (1967), during which were occupied the Golan Heights to Syrian and Egyptian Sinai. After those 48 hours, their luck changed and the Syrian forces were again expelled from the Golan Heights and the Egyptian army was almost reduced to dust in the Sinai. But the victory is still remembered every year and these were two days of "surprise" for the Israeli forces that allowed, years later, the way of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to Israel and later, the negotiations at Camp David that led to peace, even cold, between the two countries.
In Israel, the narrative remains the surprise: the Yom Kippur, the most sacred day of the Jewish calendar since the day of Atonement, when the country stops, the Arabs attacked. By surprise. But the chronics say that the surprise was not total: the king Hussein of Jordan - who has not entered the war - had warned Golda Meir regarding what was being prepared. And there is the story of Golda's meeting with the army commanders. Proceed with a preventive strike? That was the dilemma that the then U.S. secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, solved with the phrase: "Do not attack." |

You claim you are a peace maker and call for one god uniting all religions...etc. While, in all your postings you have caused at least disagreements, misunderstandings and confusions between all parties here (I will not mention anger and hard feelings). Does this comply with your duties as a peace maker?!
For example today, you are exploiting the ignorance of the majority of QL members of the Arabic modern history and the Middle East wars during the last century, and you brought us this essay (written by unknown in a language most of us don’t speak) trying to make the victory look like a defeat! Of course all members here took your words about the 48 hours only victory as granted and believed the total defeat story afterwards; while it is completely FALSE. Even the Israeli Generals-in-charge during the war did not say what you have mentioned about the defeat.
I will not even try to explain what really happened in that war here, cus this is not the right place to do so, There were thousands of books made after the 73 war and can not just explained the facts in few lines here. If anyone is interested to know more about that, he can refer to the books made by the reputable scholars (in the West and East)
For ALL QL members, please, these are VERY sensitive issues and in NO WAY to be taken lightly or be a subject for making jokes and sarcastic remarks.
Please also check Mt. Plato past postings and tell me if I am right or wrong of what I said about the hidden agenda. One other remark, he is not even living in Qatar!!

EG: I regret to inform you but Portuguese is one of the 5 languages most spoken in the world. So, all i can use are articles originatelly in english?

Adhaf Soueif the Egyptian writer gives a great account of the debcale in her book Eye of the Sun
as far as i remember i thought Egypt didn't get the Sinaii back till 1979...
but then if you have a dictator like Mubarak in power for so long then you have to celebrate something.

Mjamille28: Yes not all people on QL are located in Qatar but the majority are, and if you reviewed Mr. Plato former postings, you can smell something fishy here. So, one would wonder what is he really trying to do here?!
I guess the whole idea of QL is to help the expatriates get well-settled in Qatar in every aspect of normal daily life. It is not meant for political or religious arguments or debates.

I can't conceive of "celebrating" ANY war ...I know I am weird in this regard and have been criticized as unpatriotic but I never really "celebrate" the 4th of July because I know that wars mean violence and death. Celebration is just not something I can associate with that. Surely one is happy if they have been able to resist invasion but somehow all the parades and shows of military force are repulsive to me.
BTW, I never celebrated Thanksgiving either. There isn't much to be thankful for if you were Native American. I love my country but am not proud of everything in our history. However, I would feel that way regardless of what nationality I was because in my opinion every nation has much to be ashamed of.

I see nothing wrong with that. If you have fought in a war and won, usually losing lives in the process, then why not celebrate and remember the fallen..

PM and Platao I respectfully disagree ...I believe celebrating independence day is in honour of the liberation movement and the freedom fighters. Many came before us and paved the way to enable us enjoy the freedoms we now have. My celebrating it is my small way of saying thank you to these "heroes" for the sacrifices, the blood shed, families forever destroyed... sacrifice after sacrifice made for the benefit of future generations.
And this is said with respect to my personal views being a citizen of a country that was colonized. I can see why you would feel differently and I respect that.
