Hi Duncan!
I tried replying via PM but it says that you don't accept PMs.
I heard of the expatriates football, but I didn't go to watch the game. I've met a few people but no fellow scots. I've not found much interest either. I went back to Perth for a wedding etc between the 13th-23rd June, so I'm just back. I'll be here till Christmas but who knows if I'll come back after that... play it by ear.
Maybe the British Group is effecting response, not sure. I'm an Account Manager for an IT company called EOS Technologies. I moved over on my own. Got family back home, but not a wife or kids etc, too young for that yet!!
_______
Hi John,
Thanks for your post, as you can tell I only set up recently and not much of a response, I have been here 9 months and to be honest have not found that much of interest. There are many of us scots here but not much organised amongst ourselves!
I recently found out that there is an International expat league, with teams from amongst others Scotland and England, and that Scotland beat England 6-1 last month, ( By all accounts this is the ' Big' one every year! there is also a burns night and St Andrews Ball, again I dont really know much about who organises or details! hence the web group.
I go to Garvies / Rugby Club in the main where there are many scots, I guess you have been there? its not the classiest of places, but then I am from Falkirk!
Anyway, hopefully I will see you around, feel free to post and encourage others, are you here alone or family with you? where are you working?

Scottish People ...As you probably know there is a very large group of Scottish people under the umbrella of Scottish country dancing run by a man called John Bell is a captain in the Doha Aviation College - so most of the Scottish are associated there. They have a couple of dinners etc. in the year and have country dancing every week. I went to the last dinner and it was very well organised a most enjoyable evening.
Garvies may not be the classiest but in comparision with the downstairs bar in the Ramada is is definately ok and to join their club doesn't cost the earth where others take an arm and a leg for fees.
Perhaps you may wnt to buy a copy ofthe Marhaba costs I think QR 20/22 not sure there are many things there.
Many of the scots have been here for years and therefore have established their own groups.
However, I think getting yourself on this site if great and I am sure there will be more responses in the future.

The man is a living legend, CNN and BBC Scot clip are class.
Burns night, St And's all good. As is St Georges casue that is usually after the Scot Eng footy game. St paddy, dive club, the Anzac ball etc are also good.
Recently went to a canadian "Turkey Curl" event on the Ice rink in City Center. You tend to get ropped into the usually here.....

Hi Maureen Thanks for the ...Hi Maureen
Thanks for the post, I have found that many here for some time are involved in their own social circles as you say, and slowly but surely I am meeting people.
I find garvies one of the better places to go as it is where my wife feels most comfortable (My wife is from Taiwan so she has to put up with plenty of crap when she goes out)the bulk of garvies patrons are expat so she does not get asked how much her services are for the night so much! (sigh)
My wife sings with Doha Jazz band, and I do go with her when she sings, but the Ritz Carlton, Diplomatic Club etc are expensive (where they play the most). Once a month at the Movenpik is not bad but the bar area is quite small.
Sheena has joined the ladies group and has met a few women whom she likes, and has joined in a couple of the activities.

St Andrews Ball ...All, Canarybird has kindly offered to book a table for the forthcoming St Andrews Ball, (details above) there is 12 to a table, it would be good if we can have one to ourselves but we need to know quickly who wishes to attend, those wishing to attend please let either myself or canarybird know to ensure a place at what is sure to be a great night out, (which are few and far between in Doha).
Only those with a genuine intention of attending respond please by next Thursday (8th Nov) First come first served basis.

St Andys ...St Andrews night by the Caledonian Society is fully sold out........we tried to get a table 8 hours after the announcement....... as a type of protest, we are trying to organise another (less offcial and pompous) night to celebrate with a good shin-dig. Will keep you posted

St Andrews ...St Andrews night is history now, but we will have to be a little quicker off the mark next year in securing tickets!
The next event in Doha for the Scots will be Burns Night in mid January, I will not be in Doha at that time, but those here wishing to go should keep ears open for tickets!
I have managed to get on the email distribution list so any info I will pass on.
canarybird said
yes it is ...However, I did manage to get a ticket after all, the food was very good and as usual John Bell and his wife as well as Yanni did a great job of organising the event.
The evening was a great success, however, as soon as I get the information I will post it. Joh Bell said the tickets were sold out within 12 hours.
Burns night should be a lot of fun.

Celtic ...Tonight (Tues)Glasgow Celtic take on AC Milan in the final group stage match of the champions league, Celtic need at least a draw to qualify fo the last 16 of the tournament, which will be a difficult task in the San Siro stadium in Milan. The match is on ART sports(4) and kicks off at 10:45pm local. It will be shown in Garveys European Club for those interested

St andys update ...The golf club event was organised by the social manager at the club after some scots members mentioned that the Caledonian Society was sold out early. It was a good night and different from previous Caley Soc. events i've been to.
There was a mix of the young lad from Jive Turkey, a piper, a DJ and a another younger lad who did a bit of professional karakoe......
I think there are organising another "spill" over event for Burns nite.
