I remember the TV commentators used to make fun of some of the teams in the NHL...I mean its ok when you have to face the Canadiens, Oilers....even if you have to take on the BlackHawks or the Rangers....but who can keep a straight face when you have to battle the Penguins or the Mighty ducks! LMAO

PHILLIES-
Formerly known as the Philadelphia Quakers, the Philadelphia Phillies really shook the baseball league gaining one World Series title in 1890, five National League pennants and seven East Division titles. The Phillies are based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they earned respect from the baseball crowd as the league who leads in environmental protection. The famous team has been established in 1883 and it was only in 1890 when they were formally called the Philadelphia Phillies.

SIXERS (76ers)-
The NBA franchise began in 1949, when six teams from the midwest-based National Basketball League joined the Basketball Association of America to form the 17 team National Basketball Association. One of those teams was the Syracuse Nationals, which became the 76ers. In the spring of 1963, the Syracuse Nationals were purchased by two Philadelpians, Irv Kosloff and Ike Richman, and the NBA approved the franchise shift on May 22. The franchise then held a contest to name the club and on August 6, 1963. The late Walt Stahlberg, of West Collingswood, New Jersey, won the contest, of which 500 different suggestions were entered. Stahlberg was one of several who picked the 76ers.

RED SOX-
The Boston American League entry was commonly called "the Americans" to distinguish it from the National League franchise ("the Nationals") until the 1908 season. In 1907, the Boston Nationals abandoned their traditional red stockings in favor of blue. The Americans owner, John I. Taylor decided to adopt the red color scheme for his team. At home, the club would wear white uniforms with bright red stockings, and they would be called the "Red Sox."

Why would any team want to be called the sooners?? Sounds more like a male problem..

its from the old wagons used to cross the prairies by the pioneers...here you go...
