How did we survive during 70s 80s n 90s

Arien's picture

How did one survive growing up in the 70's, 80's and 90's?

We had no seatbelts, no airbags and sitting in the back of a truck was a treat…

Our baby prams had the most gorgeous lead based colours…
No such thing as tamper proof bottle tops…

Opening kitchen cupboards was a breeze… as safety locks were unheard off…

Cycling was like a breath of fresh air…

No safety helmets, knee pads or elbow pads, with plenty of cardboards between spokes to make it sound like a motorbike…
When thirsty we only drank tap water, bottled water was still a mystery…
We kept busy collecting bits & pieces so we could build all sort of things … and we were fearless on our bikes even when the brakes failed going downhill…
We were showing off how tough we are, by how high we could climb trees & then jumping down….It was great fun….
We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in time for dinner…
We walked to school, or sometimes we even rode our bike.
We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other…. How? No one knows…
We lost teeth, broke arms & legs, we got cuts and bruises and bloody noses…. nobody complained as we had so much fun, it wasn't anybody's fault, only ours
We ate everything in sight, cakes, bread, chocolate, ice-cream, sweet sugary drinks, yet, we stayed skinny by fooling around.
And if one of us was lucky to find a 1 litre coca cola bottle we all had a swag from it & guess what? Nobody picked up any germs...
We did not have Play Stations, MP3, Nintendo's, I-Pods, Video games, 99 Cable TV channels, DVD's, Home Cinema, Mobile phones, Home Computers, Laptops, Chat-rooms, Internet, etc ... BUT, we had REAL FRIENDS!!!!
We called on friends to come out to play, never rang the doorbell, just went around the back…
We loved being let loose in the big bad world…without bodyguards…
We played with sticks and stones, played cowboys and Indians, doctors and nurses, hide and seek, soccer games, over and over again…
When we failed our exams we were given a second chance by simply repeating the same grade…without visiting psychiatrists, psychologists or counselors…

Such were the days… We had freedom, success, disappointments and responsibilities. ..

Most of all, we learned to respect others…

seventies and Eightees were great decades..

We were more carefree.. Less materialistic. More open to criticism, yet willing to voice our opinions and disuss issues.

There was hardly any "political correctness" and we voiced opinions without fear of being labeled racist, sexist etc..

Never worried about designer clothes or walking home late night alone.

I recall going on marches against apartheid and nuclear weapons. Took buses and was happy with a crappy ford cortina.

Good old days..

One of the girls at work (1978) passed her test and was excited about going out and buying a car..

Next day she came in beaming.. We asked her which car she'd bought. She said that she disn't know the model , but it was black and really nice inside..

Turned out to be a Mini 1275 Gt with light tints, leather interior and wooden dash..

clearbluesky said I feel horrible for the kids these days. They simply don't get ...

to connect to the nature as much as I could. I wasn't alive in 70's though but it's fast becoming only a holiday time out in the nature. Am sure, they r missing out on that. Almost all the time is spent indoors with video games, play stations etc isn't a healthy thing for the developing brains though.

Am determined to make sure that my kids get to feel the nature atleast as much as I did (when I finally have them one day IA :P) It's such a heart warming soul touching thing to remember how it felt to play in the fields among the butter flies, to be able to climb the trees, fool around with rabbits in the back yard, imitate the birds' sound, splash away in fresh water, smell the freshness of nature when u wake up in the morning and the happiness when u see ur lil plant having its first bloom....I can't get enough of them. I always feel sorry for my friends who have lived only in the cities, they will never know what they missed in their life.

As I said before, it is what you make of it....it is all about choices....if you WANT to sit and play with computer/play station etc. all day...you can, if you want to go out and actually do something, get exercise, you can.....the choices are there...plenty of them, and if people are too lazy to do what they should, please, don't blame "modern times" for that....the only person to blame is ...well.. YOU.

You mess with the cat, you get the claws....

Well, where I come from people still climb trees...they also go on cross country and all other kinds of runs....plenty of forest, parks and running/exercise tracks outdoors available.
PC...sure, that is another thing...way too much of that around.That, I do agree, is a sign of our times....I am sure I do not have to explain where THAT comes from.

Not to be a party pooper, but I remember those days when:
girls couldn't grow up to be doctors or engineers;
childhood leukemia was a death sentence;
child sexual abuse wasn't talked about or believed;
down syndrome children were always institutionalized.
If we don't remember the bad with the good - and it WAS good, too - we indulge in a false nostalgia.
