Welcome Grasshoppers!

JBH's picture

It has finally started.

You probably remember the interest a short while ago that never quite bore fruit.

But here is the fresh start.

As I am STILL not in Qatar yet I am limited to what I can offer practically.

But what a great push to get me and us up to scratch.

And I must say I didn't intend this to be a martial arts forum, if you have knowlege then share it.

But in practical easy to understand realistic terms, ok?

As a suggestion I think we could start by saying what we want from this.

Scenarios are a good starting point, leading to us sharing whatever knowlege we have.

Be it skills or plain old common sence.

I have things I can share and I am sure you do too.

Lest get the ball rolling.

What do you want to get from this and how do you see it going?

Rule number one:

Do not try and fight the aggressor but just try to gain a getaway, then run – this I was told in the only self defense class I took in my life!

SuperXpat said Self defence can be useful ...

Self defence can be useful in that it probably is a combination of martial arts.

I'm not really experienced in Martial Arts, I've only been doing Tae Kwon Do for 2 years while at Uni (in Coventry, U.K.), and I always found self defence interesting. Every martial arts has certain moves that can limit the defence or even counter-attack in certain circumstances. For instance, can tae-kwon-do REALLY help when attacked inside a telephone booth?

Good things come from MAs when cherry picked.

I trained for a number of years in Aikido and whereas it would have limited use in a stand up fight it has real value if you want to escape from someone who has hold of you.

It was developed from a mix of bits and bobs from other diciplines anyway.

The founder took what he thought works and discarded the rest.

And it can be used in a phone booth or a crowded place and will hopefully deter an aggressor to attempt anything further after your initial defence.

I will find some video clips do demonstate some of the techniques I like and maybe you can have a go with a friend.

We can't forget though the simple things we should be doing to help prevent putting ourselves in vunerable positions in the first place.

Loads of people get turned over when they are going back to a parked car, they see you walking to your car distracted looking for keys, then sorting bags out, then you get in the car and are distracted with putting your seatbelt on and putting the keys in the ignition etc.

By this time someone could have easilly followed you and opened your door taking you toatally by surprise.

It happens all the time.

This is what I do;

Have keys ready well before approaching the car
Look all around the whole way to the car
Whwn you get there stop and standing tall, look all around again
Then un-lock, throw the bags in, still looking around
Get in and lock the doors, still looking around

All that shows them you are "switched on" and not an easy one to surprise, they will go elsewhere, hopefully.

Follow similar routine when approaching your front door.

Take some time to watch other people goint to their cars / front doors and you will see what I mean.

namabiru said kendo ...

Are there any kendo or iaido types in Doha, either currently practicing, have practiced before, or want to give either art a go? I really want to find something so I can keep going when I get to Doha in September or October.

JBH said namabiru ...

I suggest you contact asamarji via PM.

He is an Aikido instructor so he will probably have Iaido experience.

asamarji is currently starting up an Aikido Dojo.

Let me know how you get on.

Good luck.

Cheers! I will do so. Providing I can actually pass the government's medical exam and stay in Qatar (I had to quit reading the posts, as I was getting a bit unnecessarily nervous about the whole thing), I'll be looking to do something of use in the martial arts department.

Meanwhile, keep your eyes peeled here. Providing I can get some support/interest generated, I'll perhaps be advertising for people to participate.

zeeshan_mcse said Is there any Ninjutsu Dojo available in Qatar ...

Hi, I have a Black Belt in Burmese Bando. I trained in a lot of weapons like Stick, Sword, Double Nanchuku, Three Sectional Staff, Boken, blades. It is very similar to Ninjutsu but doesnt contain the Locking and Throwing techninques, Advanced Wepons like Naginata, SWORD, Stealth and Invisibility and is very different in concepts than BANDO.

I am interested in learning Ninjutsu. If there is no school available in Qatar i would be goint to start the Ninjutsu home study course through www.ninjutsu.com and will also travel to japan for authentic training and polishing my skills.

For newcomers learning through the DVD will be difficult but as i have a good experience in Martial Arts itll be easy for me and to train my training partner.

If somebody interested to learn this art with me through www.ninjutsu.com home study Black Belt DVD course, PM me.
