Errm, there are "heavy rains" ...Errm, there are "heavy rains" every year in Qatar.
And there are deep puddles everywhere every year.
And what would you like to "re-think"?

well... ...just light rains and the place is a disaster with the pot holes getting bigger and deeper, water logging on the roads, cracks in the asphalt, etc and if there are heavy rains then it might be a catastrophe.

Not at all ...Qatar doesn't have the concept of drainage. They never had much rain nor expect much rain and never felt the need for the same.
FYI they don't even have a waste drain system, but are currently in the process of building that..
Am sure they should be thinkning for a rain drainage system as well

In a recent interview with ...In a recent interview with Ashgal Chairmen , he explained that all new roads are enhanced with rain drainage and they’ve signed a consultancy contract to study the feasibility of installing the same for inner roads!!! I don’t know how feasible it is , taking in consideration maintainability in the long run.
Almost everyone agrees that road work management seriously needs a shuffle. No matter how many multi million riyals contracts are signed, there seem to be no improvement

I recall seeing something a ...I recall seeing something a year or two ago where a consultancy came in to examine the problem of flooded round-abouts. They concluded that it was cheaper and easier to pump water out of flooded gutters on the few rainy days a year than it was to dig them all up and install drains.
The problem to me isn't really the lack of drains to take water away from the side of the road, it's the poorly built and maintained roads where potholes and uneven surfaces pool with water in the middle of the road. Personally I don't think drains are that necessary, but resurfacing and leveling the roads might not be a bad idea.

This not uncommon in ALL ME countries ...it seems that the factor in their mind is the very short rain period and precipitation present here in the region.
But the climate change have somewhat affected the volume so they are now re-thinking, specifically those disastrous flood that happened in Jeddah and Oman.
Anyway, this is where the challenge of the consultants being hired by these countries, CAN they really convince the authorities for a long-term solution?
And guess who are these consultants? And how much they are paid? Are they effective?

Yes it can be an inconvinience ...But it only happens a couple of times a year so no biggie. Besides hearing gloomy reports from Sri Lanka of floods and deaths this year over there, I wouldn't dare whine over a little extra mud!

To be fair - and to all of my ...To be fair - and to all of my critics who say I never say anything positive about Qatar, here goes, I don't see the need to alter the drainage system for the 3 days a year when it rains hard and we have flooding. Just enjoy the change in weather and mind the idiots on the road who think that by putting their hazard lights on in heavy rain, it will protect them from all accidents!

the last time i'd been ...the last time i'd been there... it rained for not any longer than a week but usually the next day the puddles are siphoned and gone... puddles are part of the thrills of having the rain and locally driven 4x4 love rushing thru 'em (puddles)
for the last couple of years the practice haven't changed much, i guess...
however, along the stretch of the new highway bound to dukhan... they laid big perforated pipes to collect rain water and let it percolate/seep thru the ground after the downpour...
prolly, come 2022... after all the roads works are done... we will see less puddles.
too long still to speculate though ;)

rains are not once in a lifetime as u said ...My Friend, yes, its a nice feeling when it rains, but its definitly not once in a lifetime thing that u stop planning..... even if it rains 2-3 times a year but create a drainage problem, it should be rectified.
its been 3 days ago it had rainned, and still you see lots of places with flood (and believe me, its filthy water)....
Pumping out the water is not a solution for an advanced country like Qatar.....
A proper drainage system should be really looked into, taking into account a possibility of a non-stop heavy rains in the coming years.
For people who just travels in their SUVs, I know it wont make sense.... but it does for sedan owners and for ppl who commutes in these pocket areas.....

about heavy rains ...Yes, we should think once about heavy rains may be in our locality or in a large area. Some action required officially by government. It is necessary to take care about our roof water clean-up system. The construction of gutter normally used for this should be strong. The rain gutters are one and only way to clear out the roof water without damaging your home or office wall.
