Moving to qatar, being blond

Hi, I am from the U.S. and currently live in Florida. I will be moving to Qatar in Jan 2009. I have a sort of ridiculous question....basically my family is trying to convince me to dye my hair darker before moving there. I am 26 yrs old and very blond, am I going to stand out in a negative way? Is this something I should even worry about? I am a graduate student in counseling and will be looking for an internship while there, if anyone has any advice. Also, does anyone have any knowledge about opportunities for teaching English as a foreign language in Qatar as I am currently getting certification to teach?

Blonde ...Shouldn't be any problem being blond here, they don't discriminate on hair colour and there are plenty of other Western ex-pats here.
Qatar is only moderately conservative, no mini-skirts etc in public. If you do stand out you may find you get a lot of propositions.
Lots of people teach English, either at the English schools or in private tuition to local children. Hope you have your visa's and stuff sorted, you can't stay for longer than 2 months as a tourist.
Come over and enjoy yourself.

no problem to be blonde ...It seems like half of Shell's expatriates are beautifully blonde :o)

Hi ...I think you shouldn't worry much about that. There are many expatriates who are blonde, black & even bald. It doesnt 've much significance here.I think Keeping blonde 'll make you more attractive among the very usual crowd. | suggest you go ahead with blonde. If you got a lisence to teach english, you gonna have a strong money purse. There are good number of chances for those who are trained in teaching English. For which company you are going to get recruited?
Good luck for your new venture
Good day

Dont worry... ...I heard the same thing so I let my hair go a bit darker before I got here... But I hated it so highlighted it while I was here. It doesn't matter at all. Some places you will stand out no matter what your hair color is. Keep it how you like it and you will be more confident in those situations where you do stand out.
As for teaching, there are tons of opportunities...

I agree, this may be the ...I agree, this may be the "stupidest thread of the month" but very entertaining, thank you for all your responses. The question was based on my father's old fashioned thinking and your answers have certainly helped me win that argument. I just want to be respectful of the people and culture I am entering and I look forward to the experience. Thank you again....

Don't change ...Don't change what or who you are? If society does not like it.....tough....its their problem.
What I don't undertand is......why do you think that if you are blond you might stand out in a negative way?
What is this "negative way"?

Locals eat blondes as light ...Locals eat blondes as light meat is less fattening :)
Just teasing... you will only get negative attention here if you are dressed innapropriatly or behave as such, which would get you negative attention just about anywhere in the world. No worries here in Qatar, Doha is a very modern city, and some arab women are indeed blond (not Qataris but some of the Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese are natural blondes and redheads). _____________________________________________________
