Christmas Shopping in Doha

Hi, Chris Panganiban here from The Peninsula. Christmas is just around the corner and I would like to solicit from everyone their experiences regarding discussion on Christmas shopping in Doha. Alam ko naman na tayo mga Pinoy dito sa Doha ay busy na talaga sa pagbalot ng mga Christmas gifts and goodies you will send back home this early to avoid Christmas rush. So how is it going right now? Saan ba kayo kadalasan pumupunta para magshopping? Malls? Souqs? With this, I would like to ask everyone a permission to use these reactions for the story I am working. It's alright if you do not want to reveal your name. Just give me an idea , if ever, ano work niyo dito. Or if meron iba dyan na willing naman to come out in the open that would be most welcome.

i hope you don't mind my ...i hope you don't mind my question... you are working from a newspaper, right? will you be like this onboard (every now and then), asking insights, views, opinions from us then you will summarize, prepare a newsletter out of what you have gathered then submit to your supervisor? ..curious lng ha...

no newsletter ...In response to your question, Sir, yes. Pero clarification lang po, di po newsletter ako gagawin ko kung hindi straight news talaga which will land in the Peninsula's pages. There is a clear distinction between a newsletter and a news per se. Newsletters are actually newspapers themselves used only for specific audiences, be it school or companies. But news as in straight news, news feature and the likes are intended for the newspapers with general circulation like Peninsula are circulated to the general public. Straight news like what I've been working on here now is just a presentation of OFW life in Doha in a lighter vein but with comprehensive discussion on the aspect of Pinoy cultures and traditions. I hope I have explained to you my point. Thanks anyway for the query.

hmmm..thanks for your ...hmmm..thanks for your thorough explanation.. so you mean to say, you are getting STRAIGHT news out of our comments/threads here on QL Fil Expat?... from our posts/comments you would get the "OFW life"? .. you are going to quote our responses from here to your NEWS?

Be careful where opinions get into the newspaper ...It's not a fair journalism. That's passive.

not passive ...I think this is not passive , Sir. Pero , ganito po yon. Your reactions could only be part of a bigger story, I am working. No worries about names since there will be none mentioned when it will appear. That is besides na wala pa rin kami sariling sasakyan to make person-to-person interviews which an ideal thing to do.

Hope you also won't try the 50-dirham passive article ...How the person who reported that issue seems a little too 'unresourceful'.
Just an advice. Any nationality will read The Peninsula, so make it a little fair and 'active'. Welcome to Doha. :-)

C'mon kabayans, give the ...C'mon kabayans, give the dyaryoman a break! He's being creative and resourceful how he can have input in his stories. Don't you realize your answering direct questions, the electronic way. There are different types of stories and di naman kailangan personalan lahat. If you meant that he should have a variety of nationalities' comments, then I suggest he posts this in the main QL page. If you actually give out your personal info, you get quoted and see your name in print. This man is doing his job,so let's give him answers not criticism.

If he should want a variety of nationalities' comments ......he should've never post the topic in Filipino words in the main forum. Who can read Tagalog over there other than Filipinos?

can you also please tackle the issue ...of QR 100 /documents at the Philippine embassy .I'm sure maraming gustong magbigay ng comments regarding this dahil sa masyadong mahal ang bayad.

xmas news articles... ...i would suggest you write about the differences between doha's way of life during xmas season as compared to how we celebrate it back home.
by doing so, you'll widen up your arena of issues whereas gift giving only comprises partly of the main objective.
there are many other aspects you'll find different and alike... i can cite "simbang gabi" for one. Simbang gabi here is literally "mass at night" while backhome it's early AM, not to mention the chilling breeze and the fashionists now eager to show off their winter apparels...
being said, now try asking kababayans about their xmas experiences here. im sure you'll be surprised from which you can derive plenty of ideas to write with.
on personal note, this will be my 4th xmas in the making and every years' experience had been different from the rest...and wondering what would it be this time around.
looking back;
2005 xmas, i celebrated with xtian church groups.
2006 xmas, was highlighted with post asian games euphoria.
2007 xmas, reverted back to catholic xmas observance.
Now 2008, hmmm, new catholic church will experience its first "simbang gabi"...
what else? guys how about yours??

thanks for more inputs ...Now you're starting to help me unravel what I need to write more about OFW's Doha way of life and it differs from our homeland. Hey, and QR100/document... I...sm........ Tsaka na nga yan. Abangan. Tsaka yong ibat-ibang experiences mo sa Xmas dito in the last four years is again something to explore more sa others na gustong magshare. There must be some interesting reason why you survived that long except of course if you opted for it or no choice kasi 5 years contract ang sa yo. At ang "first ever" simbang gabi? wow, seguro makatatlo or apat stories tayo dyan. I have read about an article sa CBCP website about a comprehensive story on the travails of the Parish Priest here. At marami pang iba. Sige, asahan niyo po, talagang susundan namin ito on a personal "nose"worthy trail. Sana po wag kayong magsawa sa pagbigay nga mga idea na pwede nating ma-explore as a good news or feature story. Syanga pala Peninsula will have a new appealing look by Nov. 9, Abangan nyo po sa mga newsstands. Salamat po ulit.

there you go... ...as i had said, you can derive many ideas if you widen up your perspective...in return of compliment, i would be delighted to see your articles posted here in QL for the kababayans appreciation.
all the best ;)

Last Christmas nagpadala ...Last Christmas nagpadala kami ng package ni hubby sa Pinas + cash mga November palang pinadala na namin & they received it before Christmas day.
But this year were thinking of iCash na lang kasi ganun din naman and atleast tipid na sa gastos para sa papackage.
Saka i think karamihan din mas preferred nila un cash kasi mabibili pa nila if ano un gusto nila.

yano_08 & dyaryoman... ...Besides the social circle of life of OFW's, I would like to see articles that englightens OFW's on how to be effective with their financial resources. Meaning, why so many of us have spent decades in the Middle-East & yet, see very little in their banks? Or what is wrong with our spending habits? Or why many of us have no interest in building savings, investments, or retirement funds, but spend so much on pasalubongs & unnecessary expenses...?
We may read all about our social activities & all, but all these are like masks that hides issues close to our lives. At the end of the day, nobody would really think too deeply about the social or political issues & events? What everybody thinks about before they sleep at night is, their own personal financial security & struggles as an OFW.

since my first Christmas ...since my first Christmas here in Doha, Pamaskong regalo pa rin ang padala ko.
