Missing Dollar

jilfer's picture

Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each, totalling $27. The bellboy has $2, totalling $29. Where is the missing $1?

sleepless in doha said balance sheet ...

source: 3 customer paid: $9 x 3 = $27

sink: $25 with the hotel + $2 with the bellboy = $27

source = sink :)

seems we cannot add the $27, w/c is a source, with the $2 w/c is a sink... don't remember the proper terms from my accounting 101 :(

let me try to explain this.. each person paid $10 but returned the $1 so they paid $9 each..
$9 x 3 = $27 - pooled money
$25 (hotel room payment) + $2 (taken by the bellboy) = $27
so every dollar is accounted for.. =)

Apple said missing dollar?... ...

It was already paid in to the hotel! it was included in the room rate $25:)

Out of $30....

-$3 (returned)
-$2 (bellboy)
-$25(hotel rate)--> $8 + $8 + $8 + $1(missing)
