Venus and Jupiter come out to play
Saw this last night what do you think of the smiley face...

A WAXING crescent moon accompanied by the bright planets Venus and Jupiter was a memorable sight in the sky yesterday after sunset. With the exception of the sun and moon, Venus is the brightest light in the heavens, and Jupiter is second-brightest.
The Venus/Jupiter conjunction happens when these objects have the same right ascension on the sky’s dome, according to www.earthsky.org.
It’s as if they cross the same line of longitude in the sky and – for a brief time – beam north and south of one another on the sky’s dome.
A conjunction of the two brightest planets won’t happen again until March of 2012. During this particular Venus and Jupiter conjunction, these two brilliant worlds appear two degrees apart. That’s about the width of your finger at an arm length away.
It’s possible – but extremely rare – to see two planets appear to merge into a single point of light. The last time two planets met up at the same spot on the sky’s dome was in the year 1818, when Venus passed in front of Jupiter.
Conjunctions of two planets are fairly common. The planets often meet and appear close together the sky’s dome. But an occultation – or covering over – of one planet by another is very rare.
The two planets won’t meet again on the sky’s dome for another 247 years – or until Venus occults Jupiter in the year 2065, the website added.

Guess it depends where in ...Guess it depends where in the world you're viewing it from. Someone posted about it on here a few days ago, but that article (from US I think) said it would be an unhappy face.

Gosh...i knew therez somethin special abt it!! ...You won't believe the very sight of 2 big and bright stars so close to the moon was so unusual. I made my frnds see it right then. Now i see on these posts that they actually were Venus and Jupiter. Many people must've noticed it without any significance. How smart, intelligent and attentive I am to our nature!!!

Did any one see bright venus appearing within or just above the semi circle of crescent moon a couple of years(maybe less) back in Doha. That was even spectacular to watch. I was fortunate then.....

For those who said that the 'smiley' appeared much closer earlier in the evening, I think this is the same illusion that makes the full moon look massive when it's low in the sky. It's something to do with your brain's perception of the moon when it's near the horizon, but researchers have struggled to fully explain it.
You can prove this too. Next time the moon looks massive when it's low in the sky, close one eye and hold your arm out in front of you and note how big the moon is compared to one of your fingers. Do the same when it's high in the sky (and apparently smaller) and you'll see it's the same size!

I saw it walking home from ...I saw it walking home from school and just had to stop in the middle of the road to get a good, long look. The eyes were perfectly in place though--so it was a real smiley face. Mashallah, it brightened up my crummy day. :)
