Hosni Mubarak sentenced to Life

stealth's picture

An Egyptian court has sentenced ex-President Hosni Mubarak to life in prison for complicity in the killing of protesters during last year's uprising.

The 84-year-old is the first former leader to be tried in person since the start of the Arab Spring in early 2011.

Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly also received a life sentence over the deaths of demonstrators.

Mubarak and his two sons - Gamal and Alaa - were acquitted on separate charges of corruption.

Life sentence for an 84 years old is not too long. After all, it is safer for him there than his residence. Not what I call a fair sentence.

Some as opposed to none,I guess. However I'm sure many survivors of his oppressive regime would have only wanted him to get the death penalty. Still this is something..

I personaly think he should have been executed. However, his fall from grace and the capture of his sons is a sentence in itself.

So they had Hosni Mubarak removed to elect a new dictatorship? I think what the many people in the Arab world and across the globe fail to understand is that So far there has been no revolution in Egypt. As noted in this forum many months ago Egyptians are experiencing change within the regime rather than regime change.

There has been a change, because the new president is democratically elected.

Democracy and the removal of old guard does not happen overnight.

Brit: Revolution is not a garden party. It is about mass killings and destruction.

They always start as uprisings against dictatorship but end up creating a new despotism that is far worse.

I just hope that this election, being the first of its kind for Egypt, not be the last.

Agree with your sentiments. I do think that now that the public has tasted freedom, they will not allow another dictator.

flor: Chaos because its a fledgling democracy. Look at Russia after Gorbachev.. They still haven't been able to sort themselves out..

Egyptian pple are not satisfied with the verdict - protests in Tahrir Square again. The candidates for the next round of elections are using the verdict as leverage. 1 of them says that if he's elected, he'll order a new inquiry / reopen the case, which would make the masses happy.

The moment of truth - 2 weeks time' ... although we can pretty much see the end game in all of this.

/Btw, Mubarak's sons and 6 former police commanders acquitted of corruption, etc? Was this justice? And isn't this still too much of the former regime still in place? I dunno, this is what I hear my Egyptian friends say.
