Can Qatar Buy Budweiser?

LincolnPirate's picture

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has signed into law a bill that in principle allows the sale of beer during 2014 World Cup matches.

Football's world governing body, Fifa, had demanded a change in Brazilian legislation banning alcohol at football matches.
"Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup, so we're going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that's something we won't negotiate."

I guess they could buy the parent company after all they own hotel brands and shops that sell alcohol.

Good news for all the residents of Qatar as we will be able to watch the World Cup in 2022 with a beer in our hand and a smile on our faces.

The key aspects are "The new bill, setting a number of rules for the World Cup, does not mention any restriction on the sale of alcohol.

Correspondents say state governors may still ban beer sales during the event."

So Qatar could follow suit and also insist on Alcohol Free beer only :O)

Funny how those solutions didn't work in Brazil Drsam. Brazil has had longstanding laws for years prohibiting the sale of alcohol in stadiums, so it cannot be said to be different to Qatar in that regard.

The question is why would anyone expect it to be different here?

I cannot for the life of me understand why this country wants to host the most drunken sports event the world has to offer. It boggles the mind.

FIFA World Cup is a great event. But like it or not, alcohol is inextricably linked to it.

You would be living in a fool's paradise to think that the 2022 World Cup here will have a controlled approach to alcohol. That's just the line that the locals are being fed because they are too naive to realise the truth.

Once the new investigatory body starts in July, and once the Labor Minister has had his meetings with the ILO, let's just see what the outlook will be for the world cup.

Makes you wonder if there isn't more to the delay in building stadiums. First stadium won't start work until 2013, and it will be in Education City and not one of the big stadiums in Lusail etc. Kind of makes you wonder if there are some contingency plans in place in case the event doesn't go ahead??

The next few years will certainly be interesting and who knows which way it will go.

Maybe this will be the worst supported world cup ever as everyone stays away.

Anyway international football is becoming irrelevant. People would rather watch the Champions League than a boring WC. When was the last truly entertaining World Cup?

I find it interesting that FIFA have 'demanded the sale of alcohol' in stadiums for Brazil 2014 only now. Surely it should be in the contract when bidding countries fight to hold each tournament.
Essentially, if you don't abide to their rules (one of which is to allow the sale of alcohol in the stadiums) then you wont get the tournament. That way there will be no complications leading up to tournaments.

To be honest, I am used to not being allowed alcohol during matches in English stadia. The best atmosphere is always when having a few drinks before the games and then after.

To the OP's initial question of whether Qatar can by Budweiser.

Budweiser in owned by InBev, and the corporation's assets are valued is in excess of $120 billion, which would make a projected sale be in excess of $150 million easily given its profitability and 25% market share.

This means its worth roughly Qatar's GDP of last year--so a little outside of its price range. And for that I am grateful.
