15 years for using Skype?

Following on from stupid blasphemy laws that other governments think are necessary, Ethiopia decides to make using Skype a crime. Take a bow, most stupid government of the week. (this is brought to you by, Saudi Arabia, denying women the right to drive since 1923 and Syria, we don't attack other countries as we are peace loving, we only murder our own people)

Then again, what's wrong with women driving a car...ok, never mind.

It seems they are one ...It seems they are one paranoid government, who have a desire to control their people. You think with all the problems Ethiopia has had in the last 30 years they would concentrate on feeding their population first.

Traces of the reasons for ...Traces of the reasons for doing so are within the link itself. And govts. tend to do so to keep the troubles that the country may face due to uncontrolled communications. Blackberry got into such issues with many govts. in not so distant past. And when I was in UAE, do know they also didn't allow some channels of communication to keep the revenues of Etisalat intact or that is what I heard of. BTW riots in UK do remind of the negative side of the communication channels when they get into wrong hands. End of the day when the countries try to take actions for the good of the country, we have reasons to cry foul and when they get into trouble being open also we have reasons to cry foul....:(

Prism I think there is a big ...Prism I think there is a big difference in the UAE banning Skype to protect their telcos and a government giving up to 15 years in prison for using it. What are these governments scared of?

Moza... how would I know what ...Moza... how would I know what is the consideration for the govts. when they take such actions.
The example of UAE I used was to make up for this:
"Internet cafes may be allowing people to make calls for far less than the cost of Ethiopia telecom, the state's telecommunications provider that has the monopoly and charges very high prices - and doesn't want to have its service undermined," says Ms Blunt.
The other examples where, for this part of article which states ""But there is also the issue that Skype can't be listened to so easily and can't be controlled"...
With so many options for communication these days and so many trouble makers around, monitoring becomes tough, which IMO is the call of the day. So the govts. are best placed to take actions deemed fit for the stability of the country and safety of the people or at times, just for its survival. I can understand that it limits a common mans ability to communicate as cheaply as possible but then as usual, wrong doing of some, makes others bear the brunt. Whether in the long run it would be good for the people or not, only time would tell. As on today we can talk only based on what we are told or we perceive in short term or with limited information available to us.
