Introductions
Hi all,
I started the group a long while back but have been totally inactive in terms of posting anything up (which is obvious since this is the first post).
So we have a few members now so I thought I'd start with some introductions.
My name is Moeed, and I have been in Doha since Jan 2005. Used to live in Toronto and before that Mississauga. Living in Doha with wife and a toddler son has been a challenge but also wonderful many ways.
How about you guys? Where from and how are you enjoying Doha?

Ahoy hoy ...Hey there,
I've been in Doha for 2 days now, here for a month, possibly coming back for a couple more if time permits. I like it here, weather is great, people are generally swell, although I have to get used to the cold stares from some... lol. Any advice on getting as much o Doha in during my short visit, where to meet sociable people, and I love to hear your own stories. Like why you came here, the good the bad and the wonderful.
Cheers,
Jesse

Hi Moeed ...I`m here since Feb 2004, I like Doha so far. But, lately the traffic is killing me, it`s not the same like before when the first time I came here. I`m from Indonesia, I met my husband here and I have 1 baby girl.
Jesse, most of us came here for work even me. The reason I came here only to earn money. The good thing in Doha is a very safe country, u don`t have to be afraid to go out in the nite alone. The bad thing is taxy! Very difficult to find. And the wonderful thing is, u can find so many nationalities around Doha even more than the locals. Hope u enjoy ur stay. Did u visit Souq Waqif? U should go there, highly recommended! :D

Hey Tya and every_mothers_n... ...Hey Tya:
thank for the suggestion, I have not been out much as of late. I work a lot and am only now getting over my jet lag. I plan to to go to the souq soon! I'm happy to hear your story, hehe, I joke around aboud finding a wife here. Just kidding as I have a lovely girl back home.
I am hoping to find a taxi tomorrow after a DJ show, so I hope it's not too hard to find one.
every_mothers_nightmare: What are you doing now? I've been reading about the history of this part of the world. Being a camel jockey must have been rough. May I ask why you are in the Canadian's group? is there a connection.

A Canadian section is good - also ensuites for rent. ...Hi. Its good to see a Canadian section here.
I have been in Doha for 3 years and although its fairly boring at times, if you are patient and have good search skills, you can find your way around eventually.
I also have a Villa in the West Bay area and I am renting out ensuites. Full maid service, laundry, wireless etc. If you are interested please text me at 974-557-3643 and I can give you the details. If you are not supplied company housing where everything is set up for you already, then this will save you untold fustration.
If anyone from Canada needs some advice from someone here for 3 years. please feel free to ask.
All the best. Mike

Huge theatres at City Center...(mall)
Small theatres at Landmark mall
Concerts:
Qatar Foundation usually has concernts. Tickets can be picked up at Virgin stores (Vilagio mall)
- You have to visit vilagio Mall.... its very chearful :)
- Very cute Japanese store called Diso in Hayat Plaza (mall) tons of japanese things ...., except clothes..... not expensive, if you like japanese things.... lots of things for the kitchen and office...
- Aspire Club: is a great place for Excercise, classes. Have to register a month in advance.
- Aspire Park ( the new section) is adorable, very nice to walk there... as parks go in doha.....go while you still can. I heard that you cant go out much at the end of May. Cause then it will be too hot.
That is all i can remember now....

Any idea how long that might take ? I did pass medical (company med. facility)when flew to Doha for interview at RL.
What would be the reason to reject the visa application ?
Another question - if I bring IPhone from Canada to Qatar will it work there.
Many Thanks.

Hello... ...My husband and I will be moving to Doha in the middle of August. (Our tentative departure date from Toronto is August 14th.)
I'm finding some things in the process a little frustrating and confusing. The company my husband will be working for is CNA-Q, and they sent him information saying we had to go out and get a chest x-ray and HIV test for the visa process. So we thought this meant to go make the arrangements on our own. My husband got them done, but when I went to get them done I was told that we first have to have papers that will be sent to us from the immigration people telling us we need to get these done.
So we have sent an email off to our contact at CNA-Q who is coordinating our travel and visa process to ask if we need to wait to receive papers to get these tests done.
Can anyone verify for me that we wait until immigration sends us papers before getting the chest xray and blood tests done? Has anyone else had them done in Canada prior to going to Qatar?
Plus our closest branch of OPP refused to do a background check for us saying that we had to go to our local police station. Yet it was made very clear to us the background check had to be done by OPP or RCMP and NOT local police. We ended up getting the background check done online through a website provided to us by CNA-Q. Which in the longrun probably ended up being faster than the OPP anyway.
I'm sure this is probably just the beginning of being confused at times.
Anyone else here work for CNA-Q? We have no children, and as such will be given a furnished apartment to live in rather than a townhouse in the compound. I'm very curious to know what our accomodations will potentially look like.

Hi to all Canadians ...Hello everyone,
I have just moved to Doha from Dubai about a month back & in process of discovering the place.Since work timing are half Vs Dubai trying to discover the place. Being a bachelor so far have been trying out most restra's & obviously mall's around the town. Villagio is pretty cool & like the roof design there. Must say it competes with Dubai malls. Also recently cleared my full G license from Toranto so feeling happy. Cheers to all Canadians.
PS : Try the long haul between Dubai & Toronto by A 380, Its simply amazing but prebook the meal you want else you should carry your own food. Difficult for anyone to feed 500 people in Sky, that too with different preferances !!! Is there a direct flight between Doha - Toronto ???

Did anyone answer post in June? ...Hi,
Back in June Canadian_Luda aka Deb asked some questions regarding moving to Qatar. I don't see any replies. Has anybody shed light on the questions? If not, would anyone please?
Deb, hoping that you read this forum, I assume by now you and your husband are in Qatar. Would you please share your experience with us?
How long it took to get things in order back in Canada,
and how you find life in Qatar as a new arrival, etc.
Anything special that in retrospect you think you should have brought with yourself from Canada?
Thanks.

I am indeed here in Doha ...I am indeed here in Doha now, and I do enjoy it. Life here, like in any other part of the world, is only what you make it. You can sit in your accomodations and whine that there is nothing to do, or you can get out and find the things that there are to do.
When we left Canada we had 6 weeks to get everything settled before our departure. Amazingly we managed to sell the house, the cars, the furniture, and pretty much anything that was in the house before we left. We came to Qatar with 2 suitcases and a carry on each.
It is true that you can buy pretty much anything you want here -- except for J-cloths. Which is not a big thing, but I really miss having J-cloths for cleaning with! Computers/laptops are a little more expensive here than back in Ontario, and if you're in the market for a new laptop I would recommend purchasing it before moving here.
The life we lead here is different than life as we would have lived it in Canada. In Canada we never would have thought of going without a car, but yet here we are 3 months in to our Doha experience and quite happy to be without a car. Karwa's are very inexpensive to use, and private drivers are not that much more. Of course, our accomodations are in a very centralized area with many shops and restaurants within walking distance. In fact, I can think of 4 grocery stores that we can walk to, 2 small malls, and too many restaurants to count! We are also within walking distance to the clinic and a handful of pharmacies.
Our accomodations are not necessarily of a high standard. They are however clean and liveable. By adding a few decorative accents like pictures, candles, and an area rug it quickly becomes homey.
In some ways, a good motto for our life here in Doha would be that less is indeed more. Buy less material items, but do more things.
One of the things that I wished we had done differently on arrival was to put off shopping until we'd had a few good night's of sleep.
Something else that I just thought of that I would bring with me -- fitted sheets. You can find them here, but it's not always easy to find good ones... and sometimes the quality of the sheets leave a bit to be desired. So coming with at least one set of sheets would be good, and then you wouldn't necessarily need to buy bedding right away.
You also need to let go of expectations. Relax! Things may take a little more time to get done, and sometimes you run into some communication challenges, but it really isn't worth letting yourself get worked up over.
