Qatar snaps up Dubai workers
Builders in Qatar are taking advantage of the slowdown in Dubai to scoop up skilled staff that they have previously struggled to attract to the country.
Building, consultancy and engineering firms in Qatar have long struggled to attract key skills because of competition from Dubai, but now hope to take advantage of the redundancies that are sweeping across the emirate.
“There were issues about bringing people here in the past, such as housing and schools, that prevented us from growing,” said Robert Hope, a regional director at WS Atkins, an engineer and design consultancy.
“But I think there’s an opportunity for us now to get quality people in positions and move projects forward.”
Although not unaffected by the global financial crisis, Qatar’s economy is still expected to outperform regional economies this year and expand by 10 per cent, fuelled mainly by increased LNG (liquefied natural gas) exports.
Local banks are being more selective in the projects they finance, but the country is well-placed to fund crucial developments, especially those aimed at affordable housing.
Qatar’s current account surplus was worth about 52 per cent of GDP last year, according to Marios Maratheftis, CK regional head of research at Standard Chartered Bank.

The good and the bad ...The Good point. Qatar and other GCC countries are going to get a choice of quality people if they'd know how to offer them the right package.
The Bad point. Since there are alot of people getting laid off in Dubai, it is now a "buyer's" market. Meaning Qatar and perhaps other GCC countries like Saudi may offer these workers "cheaper" packages because they know that these people need to find jobs ASAP. I just hope they give them a fair and reasonable package for their talent and not get them just because they're a "cheap commodity" on a dime-per-dozen kind.
Just my thoughts....
I also hope that Qatar has adjusted some of its Labor practices in line with ILO's (International Labor Organization) guidelines, primarily the issue on holding people's passports and also on sponsorships.

I'm thinking these ...lay-off workers from Dubai think Qatar is only a second choice if not the least choice. Now, they're flocking to come here for a job? What would these already standing-by job seekers do then?

Depends on their qualifications and experience - ie. more focus on merit and not nepotism. But yes, agree with others that there is the possibility of abuse in these trying times, people not being paid what they are worth. Hope for the best.
/But nothing like working for SOME Chinaman companies with a main "policy" of squeezing blood out of stones, period.

ITS UNFAIR IF THE QATAR THINKS THAT THEY ARE SKILLED PEOPLE (DUBAI EXPERIENCE) THEY SHOULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE WITH THE CURRENT ECONOMIC SITUATION, BE FAIR TO THE PEOPLE BECAUSE SURELY PEOPLE WILL APPLY THE SAME EXPERIENCE AND SKILL SO THERES NO REASON NOT TO BE PAID MORE OR SAME WHAT THEY GOT HERE IN DUBAI,, COME ON... I don't know what the ...I don't know what the fascination with Dubai is. Dubai boomed and hired workers who were not always qualified to do the job. they were desperate and needed manpower.
Now in the downturn, many of those workers are out of jobs and looking to Qatar..
Qatar needs to ensure that it hires people with the relevant skillsets and qualifications.
