Very real chance I think. Remember the International Olympic Committee work along very similar lines to the Qatari government, if you get my drift.

Thanks KH for posting the link. On the website you can register your support for the bid. If Qatar were to host it would not be slap bang in the middle of summer. According to the rules of the IOC, Olympic Games can be held during several months each side of the summer also.

Qatar already has a ton of workers preparing The Pearl and roads, and buildings...I don't think it's ready to hold the Olympics. Where would everyone stay? Are there really enough hotels? And just think of how many more people they would have to get to build the sites for some of the games. Seems like a lot of work to add to the already full plate.

I was not trying to compare which place is better....and age has nothing to with it....Beirut for example is a heck of a lot older than Montreal....but again no comparison if you talk about traffic patterns.

What I was saying is that Qatar could (in 9 years time) have the infrastructure to host the games (as you pointed out in an earlier post)...but it does not have it yet.

Yeah, there's no question that the hosting the Olympics is no longer in anyway profitable. The competative nature of the bidding process means that governments promise things that they can't really afford. The Qatari enonomy is therefore perfectly suited to this: there is no public accountability for the government's budgets, freeing it to create as many white elephants as it wants, and of course such massive revenues from gas etc means it has the capital surplus to dedicate to projects which will generate next to no revenue.

There can be little justification for hosting it here really. Even if the population of Qatar trebled by that point you'll still get next to no attendances in comparison with hosting it somewhere else. It's too hot and Qataris outside the government don't seem particularly interested. Can we in anyway imagine thousands of people flocking to Qatar for such an event in the same way that they did for Sydney or Athens? Why on earth would they?

But of course let me emphasise that I am totally behind Qatar's bid: the Asian Games amply demonstrated that the country can more than sucessfully host major sporting events and I have every faith that the government and Olympic Committee can put together a winning bid.

Prior to Asian Olympic Games, we were worried and not confident about the success of the event.
It turned out to be a success.
For those who support Qatar Bid, visit the website and register there.
Those who are not confident, we cannot help it.
Personally, I won't attend the games if they were hosted here. By that time I would be retired and kicked out.

The Asian Games prepared Qatar very well for an event such as the Olympic Games. They learned a lot of do's and don'ts especially about spending money, the promises which weren't kept.

Why would people not be interested in Qatar, by the time 2016 comes it will have more to offer, the heat should not be an issue for the Asian games and if they have them in June it is lready Summer.

Although Athens didn't have the infrastructure (I suppose you're referring to additional public works, sports venues and partecipants' accommodation), it completed ALL the required infrastucure works on time, even though I know 1 case where quality of works was compromised due to delays.

Qatar can have the infrastructure on time, and certainly has the money and the unbuilt land to develop. Also, it is likely that Qatar can make use of the Olympic-sized venues by giving them to the respective national federations and financially support their maintenance.

I just hope that Doha will not make the same mistake as Athens, that more landscaping should have been made along and adjacent to the new infrastructure works.
