looking for desert drivers and campers

dunedude's picture

Hi All, I'm new to Doha but not to the Gulf. I really enjoyed desert and wadi driving in the UAE and in Oman. I'm looking to join an existing group of offroaders or start one. I bring with me 6 years experience of pretty intense (but responsible-well mostly ;) ) desert driving, all the necessary recovery equipment (except winch), and good GPS knowledge. Please contact me if this sounds like what you already do or would like to start doing.

Thanks,
DD

What type of communication equipment are people using out on the dunes,ie. cell or sat phones, single channel radios?

smoke signal works best ... usually when your car/truck breaks down out there its over heating anyway so just pop the cap on the radiator and use your shirt to make the smoke signals...

Off Roading is fun and challenging here. I went to the Inland Sea yesterday for the first time. I went without a guide and found it OK. Never got stuck, but turned around and looked for a different path a couple of times. The trip can test your driving skill and give your vehicle a good workout! I did a lot of off road driving in Saudi Arabia, and the fellow that went along also had a lot of experience. It is not for the novice without some guidance, I think.

its THE thing to be doing out here in Qatar on a weekend .. the weathers picked up over the weeks and its nice to be going to the inland sea or by the Saudi border ..

i go to the dunes pretty much every weekend with guys who are experienced and know the dunes pretty much in and out .. well here familiarity is the main mode of navigation used from what i know ..

Novita, I spoke to Fareh a couple of times but have not been able to get anything solid regarding dates and times. Last I spoke to him, he was in London so didn't want to make him pay for the call. Are you guys going this weekend?

breathtaking scenerybreathtaking sceneryFinally made it into the desert last weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to hook up with anyone from this forum but went out with someone from work instead. We went 10 kms south of the Sealine Resort. I wanted to get to the Inland Sea but we had too many kids in the group so we had to stop and set up near the beach. Still, we had a lot fun playing in the dunes which are actually much higher than I expected. The scenery was also spectacular with the sea on one side. Looking forward to going back soon.

yes we going this weekend. Pls PM me ... there are some silly guys on this forum asking all sort of question like can he have a lift with another car? will fareh and sharon prepare the food? and can they bring the drink and my friend prepare the food?

Some of the people here did not get it that

1. You must have your own car 4X4
2. Bring your own food and drink

I will drop u a PM now.

Hi fan_ni, I didn't manage to put a group together as there weren't really any takers. I have since found other groups to go out with. I might try to organise something for new drivers at the end of Jan. Enjoy your new 4x4.

Did I miss any action here?

I go at least once a month for over night camping in desert with my wife and two kids. I know its a bit dangerous but don't have any company to go with.

I would love to be a part of a group for desert driving/camping.

I have all the gear except winch.

I am from Europe and during my last 5 years holidays I have been driving my 4x4 around north Africa.
Many times Tunisian Grand Erg, LyBIAN Akakus, North of Tchad for about 15 days each trip.

Can a Prado 4 cylinder take the dunes?? I wanted to go many times.. but was held back as i wasnt sure if it could handle and moreover was goin alone... so if i get stuck.. god ssave me from there.. hehe... any one who has tried it in prado 2.7 4 cyl?

dunedude's picture

dunedude said Harsha, a 4-cylinder Prado ...

Harsha, a 4-cylinder Prado is perfect for the Qatar desert (it is a very forgiving one-especially if you stay between the dune ranges). In fact, I am sure any 4x4 with low-range (for the wet and mucky stuff near the sea or if you get stuck) is capable of making it to and back from the Inland Sea. You can even have some moderate fun in the dunes if you wish to be more adventurous-especially if you have a manual gearbox. make sure you don't try it alone though.
