Qatar receives troubled Arab League

qatari's picture

Arab foreign ministers met in Qatar on Saturday, ahead of the 21st annual Arab League summit. Members hope to address pressing issues such as an Arab-backed Middle East peace offer, and unity amongst an increasingly fragmented organisation. But nine out of the League's 22 member countries have said they won't attend the conference. And as Al Jazeera's Mohammed Vall reports, there's a lot for the new League's presidency to deal with, when Syria hands over to Qatar.

Happy Happy said Presidential Video Conference or Skype? ...

Why don’t the leaders, simply, sit home (from their palaces) and video conference or use Skype and just get it over with. As it seems that conferencing has become a priority now on the Arabs agenda, rather than addressing core issues and overcoming predicaments.

This is cost effective and time saving. All the saved money, from the intentionally- skipped extravaganza, could be wisely allocated to lend a hand to poverty-stricken cities or re-build the destroyed areas in the ME.

I’ll talk Mubarak into this..:)

Happy Happy said Egypt is not trying, it is what it is! ...

Egypt is not imposing itself, it’s a fact. If Egypt does not attend any pan-Arab conference, the conference is doomed to failure or at least will be hugely weighed down.

Please prove me wrong.

abuimad said egypt is cross because its ...

egypt is cross because its regional powers are slowly fading, and major players in the arab world are emerging, so the easy way out is by boycotting summits and sabotaging the ongoing reconciliation talks between arab leaders....saudi arabia, syria and Egypt each hold different power cards, qatar hold none, however they do have diplomacy and good relations with the west and the east, the smart thing to do was reconcile, ie saudi libya, saudi syria and lebanon syria, he dumb thing to do was boycott and refuse to accept the slow shift in power...

Is just so sad, as at this point in time the middle east is pivotal to so many issues, economic and politcial, and that they aren't talking or getting on is unfortunate.

Happy Happy said PM.. Countries Rights ...

Every country is entitled to look after its own interests, but it has to be within some sort of a matrix, taking into account, at the least, geographical and demographic considerations of the region.

I don’t think the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel is the reason for the current division, it’s taken advantage of though. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Althani (Father of the Emir) was a friend. Also, many countries have some relation with Israel, under-the-table.

Maybe our closer relation with Saudi? or Qatar is being rebellious and opposing, only to be different and seeking to stand out?

Don't know.
