Hummer ...There is no shortlist as such, it will get whittled down to 2 cities before the big announcement of who wins the right to host the games. Sorry, but in my opinion Doha will not be one of the final two, but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Qatar team for 2016 Olympic ... ...Aim of the Contract - intent to win as many medals in 2016.
Give out contract / Subcontract to hire:
Brazilian Football team.
US Basket Ball team.
US Track & Field team.
Australian Swimming team.
Chinese Diving team.
US & Russian Gymnast team.
Iranian Weight lifting team.
Japan Archery Team.
Australian Hockey Team.
Cuban Boxing team.
Australian Cricket team (maybe by 2016 it will also be included).
Volunteer :
Indians & Philipinos for whom transportation will not be provided. They can if they choose to travel by the esteemed Karwa Buses. (Karwa Taxies will not want them as they will not be paying the fares as being Games-Volunteer).
All volunteers will be given certificates , medals & of course facial tissues.

I think there will be a shortlist ...adey, where did you hear that it will be whittled down to just 2?
My understanding was that in June 08 the IOC announces it's "shortlist" of cities that have had their application to become a candidate city accepted, and that there is no set size for this shortlist as it depends on the quality of the bids.
The size of the shortlists for the last 12 bids (2012 to 1968) were 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4.
Oh, and in answer to the original questions - no, no, no.

Cities bids get rejected over time ( could be as you said starting in june 08) but it will come down to 2 cities for the final choice. Thats why i said there is no shortlist as such, just a timetable for eliminating prospective venues.

adey ...As you said, the deadline for submitting bids to host the 2016 Olympics has now passed. In June 08 the bids that have been accepted will be announced. All the cities whose bids have been accepted remain in the running until 2nd October 2009, when the winning city is announced.
You're right that London won over Paris for the 2012 Olympics, but at the start of the day (5 July 2005) all 5 candidate cities were still in the running and each gave a presentation. There were then 4 rounds of voting, with one city eliminated in each round. In the final round of voting London beat Paris.

Qatar has stiff competition from Dubai. If it comes down to two Cities & between Dubai & Doha, even then Dubai will win hands down not only because of better entertainment etc but also because of better "Planned" urban transportation called the Metro. While what we have here is Karwa buses that are filled with construction workers, and that take 40 minutes to travel the usual 15 minutes.
DAGOC could not even transport the volunteres and most (men & women) were left standing on the streets begging for rides home.
Not to talk about strict policing during the games so that any vehicles parked on the footpath near the stadium area were fined QR 200, that too in that weather, when taking children & camera etc could itself have been a nightmare. (On other days it not uncommon to see a vehicle parked dangerously in the middle of a narrow road or on the footpath!!!).
It definately was the games of my life.
As for me I have decided not to attend any games here rather recline on the couch & watch on the TV.
Seems like they dont understand the "sprit of the sport".

Dubai ?!?!? ...Dubai aren't bidding for the 2016 Olympics.
The following cities have submitted bids to become candidates;
Baku (Azerbaijan)
Chicago (USA)
Doha (Qatar)
Madrid (Spain)
Prague (Czech Republic)
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
Tokyo (Japan)
Doha will face stiff competition from all of them.
I don't think for a minute that Doha will be awarded the games for numerous reasons, but the transportation issues you mentioned, jackmohan, probably wont be why they'll fail. Remember the 2016 is 9 years away and Doha will probably have changed in many ways by then, included their transportation system. Most Olympic cities put in special provisions for transport during the games. London's normal transport system would not be able to cope with the Olympics, hence why they're building and planning on lots of alternatives in time for the games.

Doha (Qatar)

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) - Never had it, strong competition
Tokyo (Japan) - China are 2008, hard to say the Orient will get it again.

Excited... what d ...... ...There is no point havin this games.. n all.. it will juss make a middle class family more poorer.. it will hike up the prices increase on every consumable items.. housing will increase 30% and many other expenses. People wont get taxis easily.... Thanx but Qatar was better without the Asian games.. only few pp were keen on few sports.. rest I believe the stray cats in qatar watched most of the games in the stadiums. it'd be better to have it some place else.. for a good sports spirit.

Don't get me wrong amnesia, ...Don't get me wrong amnesia, fair play to Doha for bidding and I wish them good luck. As it's the only city on the list I've lived in I'd like to see them get it. But being a realist rather than an optimist I can't see it happening. There are many issues to consider;
- Doha is small (geographically and population)
- Poor attendance at the 2006 Asian Games
- Hot weather
- Lack of things to do when not watching events
- Qatar's practice of 'buying' athletes from other countries
- Stability of the region
- Israel
- Lack of Olympic history
- Long term effect of building all the infrastructure for the Olympics
I don't want to start a debate over whether these are valid issues or not and I don't necessarily agree with them all, but they have all been mentioned in the numerous discussions I've read about the Doha bid. Obviously all the bidding cities have their pros and cons, but I think the issues relating to Doha are too big to overcome, but I'd love them to prove me wrong.

tallg ...Israel is probably not an issue. Both Georgetown and Northwestern have said they're happy to take Israeli students, and have said that visas are not a problem. Qatar is probably the only Gulf nation that would allow athletes from Israel.

I agree Nigel ...I agree with what you say Nigel. I think the discussions I read about Israel being an issue were not talking about Qatar having a problem with their athletes competing here, but other countries objecting to them being allowed to.

sometime we have to looking at our face in the mirror before confidence to do something.
a lot of we have to do in doha. olympic is only tertier program. many primary program needs to be done.such us build REAL road, REAL public facility, REAL public transportation, REAL welfare, no discrimination,etc
yes we have public transport BUT it is not real public transport that only coming every 1 hour.no proper bus stop.limited route. limited taxi,etc.sometimes it soesnt make sense if we have to book a taxi for morning 24 hours before.
public facility? ( hospital,etc, immigration,etc ) a lot of people complaining about the service.
cmon man.... we have to fix it up first before register as Olympic contestant.
