There are a number of parallels with an all-American tale of racing fan turned team owner: Man loves drag racing since boyhood, comes from a region crazy for the sport, started off in racing's little league, and races to win even in the big leagues. Yet the differences are enough to inform us that this is a Yankees tale, not an Oakland A's tale: the team owner in question is Qatari native Sheik Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani, all of 22 years old, with a bank account that would make Croesus blush.
When Al-Thani was ready to start a top-level drag racing team after owning outfits in the lower grades, he called Alan Johnson, who had run the five-time championship-winning Army dragster team. With the aim of turning Qatar into a dragster's paradise and an estimated $10 million per year budget for a two-car team (top fuel dragster and funny car), Johnson signed up for the challenge.
A top team spends about $4 million and up for the NHRA series, which could put Al-Thani even above the U.S. Army team's expenditure. Both teams are sixth in the standings right now, with Larry Dixon (dragster) and Del Worsham (funny car) behind the wheels, but with Al-Thani committed to doing – and spending – what it takes, he might just be the Steinbrenner of drag racing before long, for better or worse.

It's his money and he's the best judge of how he spends it. You look at this 10MM as a huge amount, maybe he sees it as pocket change. I'm sure if you had billions you wouldn't spend all of it on charity (people without money say that they would, and when they get lots of money, they would only spend a percentage on charity, not all of it).

How come there are so many of their folks suffering of hunger and diseases? Why do they spend 1000 on charity and 10 millions on useless stuff? beeseh - you clearly have no ...beeseh - you clearly have no idea how much Qatar has donated to various causes around the world, like the Katrina fund in the US (I think Qatar funded a new school to be built) and the rebuilding of Lebanon.
And ROTA and Qatar Charity collect huge amounts of donations.
Not sure what Qataris have done to upset you, but try not to let it cloud your judgement and lead you to make wide-of-the-mark, sweeping generalisations.

I've met and known a couple ...I've met and known a couple of Qataris, one of them I even considered for a close friend until I found out what they actually are. And believe me, all were so sweet and nice and friendly and caring and open minded and modern and helping others - on the first sight. Deep inside they couldn't have cared less about what happens around them. I'm not saying there are no caring Qataris but the majority of them cares only about their own pleasure, that's where their charity ends.

Sheik Khalid is really into drag racing. he owns a number of teams in the U.S. and Qatar, running under the banner of Al-Anabi racing.
He's also part of a consortium that was bidding to buy the Gateway International Raceway facility near St. Louis, MO.

Bleu, I don't really think your folks is known for being open and honest. Hardly anyone knows your true full names, where you live, who you really are. Qataris have an incredible amount of money where they didn't have to do anything for it as they sit on oil. Why don't we hear then how much Qatar has donated for charity, how Qatar helped African children to be vaccinated, how Qatar helped the victims of earthquakes or floods? I see so much wealth in this country but also so much misery. I know a guy who earns at least 50K for sitting around in his office and doing hardly anything, 5 days a week, sometimes not even going to work. Then I see other ppl getting barely 2000 for working 24/7 being tossed around by the locals. Even western expatriates are not appreciated, no matter how high your education. I somehow have the feeling this society is very much rotten deep inside. Life is not valued and respected here. In Europe we have maids too but how come you never hear the employer rapes his maid regularly? We have construction sites as well but you'll never hear they are not paid for months.

Just because you have known two Qatari's that turned out to be less than what you had expected does not mean that all Qataris, are bad and care about themselves. How do you know he has not spent money helping out the poor? do you know him? have you talked to him? have you done any research what so ever asking about him, and what he has done for the community?. I have seen other threads where people have criticized Qataris and have not been subjected to as much flack.
It makes me wonder if it is a specific reaction to the money issue. We are all guilty of spending money on services and items we don't need. Every one of us could put aside some money for more altruistic purposes, but never seem to want to give up our leisure purchases to do so.
Is this rather passionate defense of this particular Qatari, rooted in the defense of our own spending and lifestyle choices?

I think I have a better experience. my house is surrounded by Qatari families. I don't care how much they earn and how they sped. but I find them very good neighbors, and also very generous. I respect their privacy as they do the same.
10 Millions is a very big amount of money. but if the Sheik spend them to have his own teams and rise Qatar name in this sport, then I think it's reasonable.
besides, he's spending them on some sport, not in night clubs , like many others...!!
let's be frank, Qatar is one of the best countries denoting a lot of money to help countries around the world irrespective.the latest was their honorable stand with Gaza people...
