The Hidden Risk of File Sharing

novita77's picture

Many of the hundreds of millions of people around the world who swap music, movies and other digital content on their personal computers over the Internet have inadvertently put themselves at risk of identity theft.

Users of popular file-sharing services such as LimeWire have found themselves victims of identity theft when their personal information was inadvertently shared on a so-called peer-to-peer network. And recent high-profile breaches via these networks have put thousands of people's financial information at risk. The problem typically arises when users set up file-sharing software and create a folder for their downloads in the same location as their personal files.

SherifEldeeb said This is the problem of the ppl, not P2P networks ...

When you share you personal files is like keep the door of your house wide open with a BIG come'on'in , don't blame the thief, blame yourself :).

P2P is one of the best things that happened to computers since a long time :) knowledge is power, and sharing it is a must.

I'm not talking about illegal sharing here.

The TRUE hidden risk of P2P are much more than just mistankely shared his own files, it's about telling everyone on earth what your real IP is, and clients' flaws that show from time to time.

That's why I suggest that if you're into P2P sharing, Install VMware, start a nice virtual machine, install all the " Dangerous" software on it, and dive into the sharing world restin assured that if something wrong is going to happen, it's not happening for your REAL computer, it's The VM "I know it's not *THE SAFE* way, but at least you'll be much safer safer".
