The Sustainable Innovation Forum 2012

Climate Action, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will this year host the high-level Sustainable Innovation Forum, 6 December 2012, at the InterContinental Hotel Doha, alongside the UNFCCC COP 18 proceedings. The Forum will be the premier destination for senior governmental representatives, global business leaders, UN governing bodies & non-governmental organisations.

Now in its third year, the Forum will concentrate on solutions, actions, and leadership as well as the challenges and opportunities that exist for increased sustainable development. The Forum will once again feature high-level government and private sector panellists covering three short plenary sessions followed by an evening of informal networking.

I find it odd that the country with the world's largest per capita user of water and the largest per capita carbon footprint is hosting this.

Qatar's per capita carbon footprint is definitely high due to some obvious reasons..

This country with a very small population has production units of steel, cement, aluminium, fertilizer and water which are all power intensive. Also, processing of natural gas requires a portion of it to be flared-off.All these industries along with the domestic needs and inland transport cumulatively have increased the ratio. It's not surprising at all.

However, Qatar, in its Vision 2030, has given a serious thought to go for non-renewable sources of energy and wean itself out of oil and gas dependency in the next few decades.

QSTP is presently doing good work on non-renewables like solar and wind. Also, shortly, the country will have its first polysilicon manufacturing facility in collaboration with Solarworld, Germany. This is good for a start.

I feel Qatar should make use of its long costline to harness the winds & tides and use the 360 day sunlight to have more solar panels for street lighting, agriculture and domestic uses.

It is always good to know that there are these campaign for climate change. Several country are in fact promoting sustainable living from green resources and ideas. But, many people are not so educated about the importance of saving our planet, so they don't care what they do. Event like this is very important to have everyone of us educated about our earth current state. We can still save our home if we act responsibly. Better waste management system is one of our goal that we need to be done accordingly.
