I am here at Villaggio taking some shots. It is opening today, and staff are arriving for work. Public however are at the moment being turned away. Security say with the exception of a few shops the whole mall will be open for business.

I have searched all the obviouse places and there is no sign of any memorial to those who lost their lives. Not even a bunch of flowers (yet).

The wind is blowing in my direction from the mall, and I can still faintly smell smoke. I don't know what it's like inside yet as I haven't managed to gain access yet. Security have even tried to stop me taking photos outside. But they failed ;)

I am aware that life must go on. And yes one day I will return as well. But this morning brought back very sad memories, and yes in places with the wind blowing in my direction from the mall I could still faintly smell smoke, and it brought it all back for me.

I guess I would just like to see something, anything no mater how small remembering what took place. A reminder that it should never happen again, and a way of showing those who lost loved ones we have not forgotten them.

What happened at Villagio wasn't an accident, it was criminal negligence and a failure to adhere to the building codes. Hence the criminal charges.

Accidents happen when unforeseen circumstances occur and the preparations can't cope with them. In this instance, anyone could see a fire might happen (in any construction) yet the fire exits were chained shut, alarms were ignored, a nursery was allowed to operate without proper permits or inspections as was the remainder of the shopping centre.

This wasn't an accident. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

what is the point for making a memorial ??

The victims should be always in our hearts and thoughts memorial and there is no need for such things.

it is just a Western Tradition, since in the West people thinks that having a memorial will make us remember the people who passed away.

Death is normal, and all people reading this thread will die sooner or later including me, so should we also make a memorial for us ? or for those who die in car accident ?

What is so special about Villagio unfortunate incident ?

Kids are dying every day in Palestine ans Syria and no body says we need to make a daily memorial for the War for these kids.

life is valuable whether adults or kids, but death is normal too and sometimes we don't understand it.

world death rate 8.37/1000 people

it means about 153,000 deaths per day, and 367,000 births each day... (it takes two adults to make 1 birth, and there is usually just one birth a year per family -- if that -- which explains why the birth rate has to be much higher, to sustain the current population).

let me share something, 5 years ago.. gate 2 of a mall bigger than villaggio located in my country exploded due to gas leakage from its basement.

after the explosion you can see bodies of dead people.. in numerous counts in all areas affected by the incident, but you see here, life goes on and business as usual, the mall opened its doors again after 3 or 4 days max after the mall got clearance with some parts of it closed to the public...

the opening of villaggio is not that as big deal as it is, a business establishment meant and will always mean business..

lets be realistic, there are investors who invested HUGE AMOUNT of EFFORT behind these shops.. these investors were offered/convinced by concerned parties to put business here in qatar, NOT TO MENTION huge number of employees who completely rely in villaggio for income and living.. for a country as strong as qatar., they will not turn these investors down,

as villaggio open its doors again, we remember those who lost their loved ones by this tragic incident, accident, criminal offense whatever term may suit it.. our deepest sympathy to you all..

but to put DETAIL by DETAIL what happened on that tragic day in may is not appropriate anymore.. its just like bringing back bad memories more for those who are really affected,

REALITY BITES but still,
LIFE GOES ON,
no matter what,
no matter how..

Take this as a learning experience. When you move to certain countries all bets are off. Mockeries and injustices happen in the west too.I don't want to deflect the subject, but injustices happen and we should not be surprised that it will never happen again.

Will I stop going to villagio, no. however will I remember the tragedy when I do enter it, yes. This is my own personal memorial.

The idea of a memorial is not "Western". This habit some have on QL of declaring everything with which they disagree or don't recognize as either Western or un-Islamic is absurd. Memorials exist in almost every culture--Japan, China, India, U.S., Germany, American Indian, Maori, etc. etc. etc. Mohamed's grave is marked and visited by millions.

To put up a simple marker is not in violation of anyone's culture. It's a simple courtesy to the parents and a reminder of to everyone of the life lost and the need for continued vigilance for the safety of our children.

t_coffee--your comments are in incredibly poor taste. The parents made the mistake of trusting that the nursery and mall owners were complying with national fire safety codes and that the government was meeting its obligation to enforce them.

As Drovers says, it will all be forgotten in due time. Only those who lost loved ones will remember the incident and continue to feel the pain.

The best way for closure is not neccessarily a memorial, but an open an honest inquest into what happened, why it happened and holding accountable those who were in charge and allowed mistakes to occur.

Just look in mosques there is no statues, pictures etc.

Islam is just about a relationship between people and the only God, nothing else, that is why, memorial are not encouraged since people tend to mix things and start worshipping dead people etc...

This is an absolute disgrace, what is the outcome of the hearings, who is being prosecuted, why is justice not seeming to be done? How do we even know this building is safe without having had a trial/inquest to find out what went wrong.

Also, why are the fire doors still being blocked with wires now (as opposed to chains which I presonally saw before).

There needs to be alot more transparency about these hearings, to give the public the confidence that these places are safe to visit and also to let the grieving relatives find some peace and to understand what went wrong.

LincolnPirate said We understand from media ...

We understand from media reports that Villagio is to reopen. Whilst we understand that this day had to come, we are angry that not one representativefrom Villagio or the Government has had the respect to contact us in advance to explain thisdecision. We are angered that Villagio has not even had the courtesy to invite us to grieve for our children in private at the location they died. The owners and the management should be ashamed. Villagio is reopening before the owners of the mall and Gympanze have even been before the Qatari Courts as they are required to do so. As a matter of fact, the first court hearing was postponed because the defendants did not have the humanity to show up for the proceeding. Whilst we accept the right of Villagio to reopen we also assert our rights as the families of the victims of this crime. Those individuals and entities responsible must face justice. It is unacceptable that as of today the families have had zero communication from the Government. We have legitimate questions to be answered. As a consumer, you have a choice where to shop. If you choose to return to Villagio we have one request. Each time you return, remember. Remember the memories of those who died - including our 13 most precious children. Remember those who died trying to save our children. And remember the negligence of Villaggio and others in allowing this to happen. And remember that justice has not been done. As everyday, today is a day of grief and reflection. We will not forget. We ask you to pause and remember. We will fight until justice is reached. You have a choice. Signed

celticgirl's picture

celticgirl said We often misunderstand each ...

We often misunderstand each other through the use of words. Memorials are not sites of worship. They serve several purposes. It is through memorials that over many decades and centuries that we remember tragedies in the hopes that we can learn and not repeat the same mistakes for future generations. A memorial also honors the lives of the people lost. Don''t mistaken honor with worship.

Innocent people lost their lives because of the gross criminal negligence of others. Because of a lack of respect for the law and the safety of human lives. What is truly said is like everything else Qatar this will be hushed hushed as much as possible. As they did 2 years ago when one Sheikh shot and killed another Sheikh and we read nothing about this in the news - they will do the same with this. These families deserve justice and the public deserves to know that all the right practices, standards, laws and most importantly enforcement of these is put in place. Harsh penalties should be in place for those who break the laws and worse for those who give pay-offs to get licenced. It is through dialogue and openess that we learn not through sweeping things under the carpet and hoping it will go away. The victims, the families and the public deserve to know what happened and what will be done to avoid it happening again.

As for the offenders who didn't bother to show up in court and turned off their mobile phones - that just goes to show you how much respect they have. When you don't show up for court in most countries a warrant for your arrest is issued. So why no warrants? Let's hope they at least put a travel ban own them. God bless the victims and their families
