As we say, life goes on and on...Accidents happen but time is a big healer...

I am here at Villaggio taking some shots. It is opening today, and staff are arriving for work. Public however are at the moment being turned away. Security say with the exception of a few shops the whole mall will be open for business.

I have searched all the obviouse places and there is no sign of any memorial to those who lost their lives. Not even a bunch of flowers (yet).

The wind is blowing in my direction from the mall, and I can still faintly smell smoke. I don't know what it's like inside yet as I haven't managed to gain access yet. Security have even tried to stop me taking photos outside. But they failed ;)

There seems to be a fire drill going on at the moment. Alarms are sounding, and staff have all come outside. Hmmm... Not that many of them. I am guessing if it is going to open today, it won't be this morning.

Enjoy the place where 19 people including 13 children died, and where the responsible people did not show up in court and could not be reached, because their phones were switched off!

Villaggio is functional now...though some shops are still not ready ...Carrefour started their business and public started shopping now...

The roads leading to Villagio are lined with Tiida's, Sunnys, Toyotas and others filled with smiling people slowly making their way to the Mall. Some whistling, some just weeping with joy.

many are bringing tents, with the intention of staying the weekend.

their is no thing called memorial in this country spectial for the non qatari person, thay say you are in my country to make mony and prepare to be a victom at any time, they don't respect a live person how do you expect to respect a dead person?????????????????

I personaly don't see the need for a memorial and I very much doubt whether the authorities would even consider it ..

What people are looking for is results of the investigation, justice and closure for the families who were affected by the tragedy.

We don't need a plaque or memorial to remind us of the tragedy and the loss of innocents.

This tragedy, will live on in our memories - no matter where we are.

Which management will call you and why? Are you working for Villagio?

what is the point for making a memorial ??

The victims should be always in our hearts and thoughts memorial and there is no need for such things.

it is just a Western Tradition, since in the West people thinks that having a memorial will make us remember the people who passed away.

Death is normal, and all people reading this thread will die sooner or later including me, so should we also make a memorial for us ? or for those who die in car accident ?

What is so special about Villagio unfortunate incident ?

Kids are dying every day in Palestine ans Syria and no body says we need to make a daily memorial for the War for these kids.

life is valuable whether adults or kids, but death is normal too and sometimes we don't understand it.

villagio itself is now a memorial for the 19 who died.

In Islam there is no such thing as memorial monument for death people. Yes there maybe some places where some muslims saints were burried in. But in islamic tradition it is forbidden to worship graves even that some people do that. This does not mean islam allows it, it is just a tradition of some people.

When I said the example of children dying in Syria, I mean that is a more important issue than the Villagio victims.

Going by the turnover of people e in Qatar it will only be the locals that will remember the fire, it happened , very sad,, nothing will come to it, maybe some ex pats will be charged over it,, not a local in sight to be charged, will it change anything NO.. will it improve safety .NO, I bet you that in under 12 months everything will stil be the same,, exit doors locked, alarm systems not tested or working. And everyone saying, its not my area,, not my fault, don’t blame me, nothing will change I bet, and as I said in 12 months we wil have photos to prove it again, locked doors and exits..

I would agree with you here. By erecting a plaque / memorial, one is admitting that a tragedy occured.

As Drovers says, it will all be forgotten in due time. Only those who lost loved ones will remember the incident and continue to feel the pain.

The best way for closure is not neccessarily a memorial, but an open an honest inquest into what happened, why it happened and holding accountable those who were in charge and allowed mistakes to occur.

OK, so no memorial. But it seems almost disrespectful to the victims to put up a cheap picture of Venice blocking off the section of the mall where the horror happened....and to see people sitting in the gondola and having their smiling faces photographed in front of it made my heart sink. It just shows that the people in power here want to cast a veil across the whole episode and carry on as if nothing happened.

It could be okay in east or west and it could be practicied even in muslim country, but that does not make it an islamic tradition.

The prophet Mohammed himself, said specifically do not make my grave a memorial. Since he was afraid that people will worship his grave etc... but unfortunatly some people do this.

Just look in mosques there is no statues, pictures etc.

Islam is just about a relationship between people and the only God, nothing else, that is why, memorial are not encouraged since people tend to mix things and start worshipping dead people etc...

demolish villagio is not gouin to do any good. it will not bring the dead people back. life must go on. if every building had to be removed every time there is a fire, and people die in the building. then there wil be nothing left. and i stronge belive that the famelies that lost love ones children and so on. have same opinion as me. what is important, is that what happened will not be happening again. life will go on. its not the buildings fault. but the people running it, and the people that aproved the safety there. witch means it goes all the way up to moi. because civel defence is under them. you want to take down that to ? wake up. and by the way, talking like you do, is not helping the famelies in anyway.

We understand from media reports that Villagio is to reopen. Whilst we understand that this day had to come, we are angry that not one representativefrom Villagio or the Government has had the respect to contact us in advance to explain thisdecision. We are angered that Villagio has not even had the courtesy to invite us to grieve for our children in private at the location they died. The owners and the management should be ashamed. Villagio is reopening before the owners of the mall and Gympanze have even been before the Qatari Courts as they are required to do so. As a matter of fact, the first court hearing was postponed because the defendants did not have the humanity to show up for the proceeding. Whilst we accept the right of Villagio to reopen we also assert our rights as the families of the victims of this crime. Those individuals and entities responsible must face justice. It is unacceptable that as of today the families have had zero communication from the Government. We have legitimate questions to be answered. As a consumer, you have a choice where to shop. If you choose to return to Villagio we have one request. Each time you return, remember. Remember the memories of those who died - including our 13 most precious children. Remember those who died trying to save our children. And remember the negligence of Villaggio and others in allowing this to happen. And remember that justice has not been done. As everyday, today is a day of grief and reflection. We will not forget. We ask you to pause and remember. We will fight until justice is reached. You have a choice. Signed

We often misunderstand each other through the use of words. Memorials are not sites of worship. They serve several purposes. It is through memorials that over many decades and centuries that we remember tragedies in the hopes that we can learn and not repeat the same mistakes for future generations. A memorial also honors the lives of the people lost. Don''t mistaken honor with worship.

Innocent people lost their lives because of the gross criminal negligence of others. Because of a lack of respect for the law and the safety of human lives. What is truly said is like everything else Qatar this will be hushed hushed as much as possible. As they did 2 years ago when one Sheikh shot and killed another Sheikh and we read nothing about this in the news - they will do the same with this. These families deserve justice and the public deserves to know that all the right practices, standards, laws and most importantly enforcement of these is put in place. Harsh penalties should be in place for those who break the laws and worse for those who give pay-offs to get licenced. It is through dialogue and openess that we learn not through sweeping things under the carpet and hoping it will go away. The victims, the families and the public deserve to know what happened and what will be done to avoid it happening again.

As for the offenders who didn't bother to show up in court and turned off their mobile phones - that just goes to show you how much respect they have. When you don't show up for court in most countries a warrant for your arrest is issued. So why no warrants? Let's hope they at least put a travel ban own them. God bless the victims and their families
