Attempted Sexual Attack

Hi
This is my first post but I am rather distressed and would like to canvass the opinion of people here you are familiar with the workings of Doha.
A female friend of mine from Singapore just started her training with Qatar Airways. She was out with some of her other trainee friends and left slightly earlier to head home. The taxi driver dropped her off on the main road leading to her compound (which I am told is only a 3min walk away). As she alighted, she noticed a man in traditional Arab garb (dishdash) walking along and did not think anything of it. According to her, as she started walking up the road, she felt as if someone was following her.....she walked faster and then heard footsteps behind her quickening....as she turned around to check, the man (the same man in the Arabic garb) starting running towards her and he literally was trying to grab her...luckily for her she runs quite fast, and she just got away by running into the gates of her compound......
I am indeed shocked.....as this is not the only incidence of trainees being attacked...a few week ago a group of 5 girls were also chased by guys on bikes and two of them were hit from behind.....
of course I suggested that she inform her superiors but she said that was not an option and a Korean girl who was recently raped was immediately ejected from her course as Qatar Airways "do not want any problems, especially with local Qataris"......I certainly hope that is not the attitude of Qataris towards these girls trying to get their training.....I feel really sorry her (I live in London) and I am sure no decent person would ever want something like this occur to their family members or friends...
If this is true, she will continue to have to risk being attacked every time she steps out of her compound. This incident occurred at 0830pm, which is not really very late nor was she in any way inappropriately dressed.
I would be grateful for any advice on what she should do as ultimately, she does not want to lose her job, but is grateful that she managed to get away, let alone avoid being sexually attacked (as that is the only assumption she can make since this man was trying to grab her).....she was in a really bad shape as she has never experienced something like that as she has travelled widely and not felt as threatened as she feels now.
If this is indeed the case, I am disgusted at the barbarism of these predators especially in an Islamic country.
Any advice/insight would be very welcome.

Try to act as if you know what to do next or scream so that people will get notice of you...shout in English so that everyone can understand like HELP! or POLICE!! or throw your stillettos or your heavy bag enough for him to get hurt.

easier said than done... ...We can comment, we can suggest..of course..a bit easy on that..but you know what?...you'll never know what's going on in this heads of sex maniacs lurking around Doha lately. I noticed there's been too many posts about "rapes" or attempted rapes on women working in Doha. Much of these were expatriates and the perpetrators are mostly locals. What to do??
Scarlett said
It will help a little to look ...like you are not weak, but if a perpetrator is set on attacking you, he will...and letting someone out 3 minutes from her destination isn't what a taxi driver should have done in the first place. Tell your friend from now on that when she hires a taxi, to have him drop her directly in front of the compound gates and watch her until she crosses them.
From what I can tell rape is much more prevalent in Doha than is reported. Unfortunately, I can also see why, from the comments of the Korean girl who was fired because she WAS raped. That just not right.

doesn't matter what you are wearing or that you are in sports wear and carrying hand weights and obviously exercising.
this ranges from curb crawling to assault
If I walk in my local neighbourhood I can almost guarantee getting curb crawled.
all i can say is carry a mobile and pretend to be talking really loudly...YES JUST OUTSIDE...BLAH BLAH have a camera on it and be prepared to take a picture... I do this with curb crawlers...they scoot off without me having to say a thing.
I also believe in nipping things in the bud. Stop and ask what they want dont allow them to follow you... when you finally say no it may be too late. Dont ignore the first curb crawl /following- take a photo.
Your friend needs to get numbers of other folk where she lives whom she can call as she walks to her house and who can come and meet her at the entrance.
Some members feel that "i get my knickers in a twist' with my zero tolerance policy - first strike and you are out - no 'ignoring it and it will go away' - it doesn't that is seen as tacit acquiesence.
I lived here three years before I instituted it and I feel a lot less harrassed now....
Your friend is welcome to PM me if she wants to chat.
PS - one day I swear I am going to throw one of my hand weights thru a car window.

Girls ...Have to be careful here like in any city around the world.
It is obvious that crowdless and/or lightless streets are high risk for girls to walk alone. Sometimes for males as well. Even if accompanied by a male friend. There is nothing that would stop rapists in such places.
Unfortunately, the place here is highly crowded with male bachelors. Most of them are workers who rarely see a female. So you have to expect the unexpected.

yep this kind of thing ...happens all the time out here - and yep Karwa taxis arent safe! When you use a Karwar taxi take his plate number and then either call or pretend to callsomeone and tell them the plate number. Its not safe to walk the streets alone as a women out here - like Orynx said if your female your fair game - remember some of these people think women and i quote " secretly enjoy rape" or they " shouldnt be alone with a man as they are asking for it" - yeo these are comments from people on QL!
All she can do is have protection which she feels comfy with! i have had mine for a year now! I mean even when i am walking three dogs the men still come at ya!
and yep the police wont do a thing about it - i was harassed by a qatari for ages gave the cops his license plate and they didnt do a thing - he was too high up! I like to check his fines thou on the moi as i believe in karma and he has loads!
so yeah sadly rape and attacks are common out here and not many people really care ( dont mean you QL ers!)

hi roger, first i feel sorry ...hi roger,
first i feel sorry about what happened to your friend, and believe its not the first time ive heard something like that, and even I as a male, experience indecent proposals from bloody perverts. that's how desperate some people could go. see, i really dont wanna be radical and stereotypical again on this, but when I was in London for a short visit, I watched one talk show on TV, and one of the guests said something like "In the world today, the more religious a country is, the more unstable it gets, economically, socially, and MORALLY". In other words, the more you deprive people, the more they go berserk.
But to all of you who wants to react, again, pls dont quote me on this, I just saw and heard it on TV.
And anybody with brainstem will realize that what happened to your singaporean friend is a classic example of what that guy on TV is saying .... Ironic isnt it
It is inevitable,it's the effect on their human nature.
The best way to get rid of it i'd say.... is "Self-Defense". You could not rely on anything else, specially if you are alone. Do whatever it takes to defend yourself. If the world is a jungle, then this part of the world is the snakepit.

For the case of all female kabayans, buy that thing that security guards are using (the one they put on their pocket), the spray. You can buy it in Recto or those places where they sell ROTC/CAT goods, and security guard paraphernalias.
There are also some short knives disguised as Pens, intended and designed really for self defense. Once you are all equipped, and this thing happens to you, kick their perverted asses hard! and make them suffer. Strike their eyes, or hit them in between their legs.
But of course again, prevention is the best medicine. As much as possible, avoid instances that could lead to that situation. ;)

Lifestyle change ...I really have something to say here, I've been a lurker on QL and always feel bad when people say it's the local Qataris who are harrassing/raping? the women.
We all live in a country where 10 years ago you would not see any women on the street, even the foreigner women did not go out much. All you saw was men! I think the country still has a 4:1 ratio of men:women (many are low-pay workers).
Many of the men here (of many different nationalities) are woman-hungry, and they think that any woman that smiles "wants them". Unfortunatelt you never know what on a man's mind. Just like anywhere else, you cannot know the good guys from the bad guys.
Self-defence, running and screaming, are the only options for a woman walking alone (esp. at night). There are a lot of good people out there so running for help may be an option (but you still never know).
Local woman do not go out alone at night for the same reason.

DON'T YOU THINK THAT FIGHTING WITH SOMEONE IN THE STREET (LOCAL) EVEN IF DEFENDING HERSELF WOULD GET HER OUT OF THIS COUNTRY, AS WE ALL KNOW THERE IS A HUGE BIASE IN DEALING BETWEEN NATIONALS AND EXPATRIATES HERE, SO WE'LL END UP WITH THE SAME RESULT, AND SHE WILL LOOSE HER JOB.

Well, I was waiting for my dad outside of my office building and these stupid bastards (black landcruiser) stopped in front of me telling me that they can give me a ride. I f**king flipped them off and shouted at them and they left!! That was actually a bad day from work, I must have released it on those blokes!!
If they would have come any close I'll blind them with my hairspray and they'll wish that they were never been born!!!

this is how I see it: There ...this is how I see it:
There is no more crime in Qatar than anywhere else, actually probably there is less crime in Qatar than in other places...THE PROBLEM IS...in Qatar there is no protection for victims, there is no interest in protecting expatriates, crimes are often willingly not punished if committed by Nationals. This country is desperatly tryng to hide it's own reality, they turn their head and tell themselves that this is a peaceful Eden populated by peaceful and respectfull people, and they actually really believe it!
Everyday in Qatar we hear about expatriates dissappearing in thin air, bein taken away by the police with NO CHARGES, embassies not being informed, women being beaten raped and killed and institutions being in complete denial.
Let's be honest now, NO expat comes here because Qatar is a nice place, and even if it was a safe heaven still people would not move here for that reason. expatriates come to Qatar to get higher slaries than in their home country. expatriates are here to make money and leave as soon as possible because good or bad as it may be there is no place like home.
What I believe is that no matter how horribel the situation at home might be Qatar is not the only place in the world to make some money, the world is big and there are other options. So if you are abused, assaulted, raped or whatever else I say speak up, tell the police tell the newspapers tell the world! Ok they will fire you and send you back home....can that be worse than stayng here and being the silent victim of a society that does not recognise you as being a human being??

This really ****** me off ...I haven't even decided to take the offered job yet and now this! Any man who molests a female is really lower than scum.
Ladies, I have made up my mind. I will be comming to Qatar only so that I can dish out a special SA welcome to these scum.
Also, don't be afraid to stand up for yourselves. The more it is ignored the braver these scum are going to become. Even if the cops do nothing, let us know so that we are aware of it ...

Disgusting..Behaviour wonder why these kinda of things.. ...never make the news. Are Qataris above the law?
Anyway coming to the point, I think not matter where you are in the world you have to watch your self. Yes this is Muslim country etc and is quite safe generally, however general precautions are necessary.
I would like to find out why this young lady was trying to walk when Qatar Airways have their own Transport, what made her take the taxi and if she did why did she get off early. Qatar Airways have one of the strictest Curfew on young females in Qatar. If they late 10 minutes after midnight they get a memo and on your bike next plane home.
So advice for our young female singaporean friend and Roger other have mentioned above please take care and dont put your self in a position where you might allow these predators an opportunities, alway try to travel with friends or get a number of Taxi that your friends use and that one has try and tested before.

1st thing i wanna say is ...1st thing i wanna say is that rapes happen everywhere in the World, so, it's not a surprise that it happens also there, if you all remember the suggestion i gave on another topic at culture, politics and religion, i said that the best way for muslims to show that they don't fall when tempted would be stopping the restrictions on clothes, with all the information available in the web, men have sexual dreams and when living on a conservative country, thoose dreams must be kept hidden and this just shows that Ramandan ain't a true test to the chances of falling if tempted.

Best advice is to not walk on the main road get taken all the way to the gate of your compound. Also, carry around some mace or some other self defence equipment.

... ...Build up a defense. Get a group together on your offtime and invite those who can teach defense or educate. Simple research on the internet will show you some defense tactics. Do a search on making your own pepper spray, its on youtube! Even carrying a rock in your hand will do. Educate and prepare and I'm sorry to say, trust no one. If defending your person is equivalent to losing job, then please look for another job. Your safety, peace of mind and life are not worth the crappy job with unsupportive employers.
Someone could possibly inform newspaper of this thread? Is there a women's support group here?
