thanks but the fact is a group of 5 girls travelling together were also attacked....if that is to be expected in Doha, I am speechless....maybe it is naive of her but then again she's from Singapore and if anybody tried that in a public place, the locals would thump him, the police would do so as well and when he's in prison, the guys on the inside will also thump him.....rapists tend not to be well regarded behind prison walls in Singapore.....

Thanks for taking the time to response...it is a terrible thing that I do not wish upon anybody.....she is by no means feeble or weak but she was just caught byb surprise as these things tend to happen when one least expects it.....I will speak to her later tonight and hopefully she is holding up better than she was yesterday.....

all i can say is carry a mobile and pretend to be talking really loudly...YES JUST OUTSIDE...BLAH BLAH have a camera on it and be prepared to take a picture... I do this with curb crawlers...they scoot off without me having to say a thing.

I also believe in nipping things in the bud. Stop and ask what they want dont allow them to follow you... when you finally say no it may be too late. Dont ignore the first curb crawl /following- take a photo.

Your friend needs to get numbers of other folk where she lives whom she can call as she walks to her house and who can come and meet her at the entrance.

What does it matter if its legal or not.... if he goes to the cops... for your assalting him with the spray, then he will have to explain what he was doing so close to you, that you sprayed his face.....

it's indeed fraustrating. Im so feed-up with these attempts of any sort each time i/we go out. So for me and for the rest of my close friends, if we don't go out in group we better stay home, thu' boring. On the otherhand, better be bored than be abused. I may have exaggerated in looking into this matter but with countless events that I've witnessed, heard, and even experience. No doubt it's best to stay in the room if no one will accompany me out (once in a bluemoon, i go out with my friends and be very, very careful).

I dont live in Qatar, but i work night shift in Glasgow city centre which can be a violent city, but not as bad as a lot of places. I always carry a personal alarm, the racket would waken the dead if i pulled the cord on it. Also went to self defence for women classes once and learned one or 2 useful tricks, like being grabbed from behind, dont struggle but take quick steps backwards into THEM, it trips them up and they usually fall, gives you time to get away, its the one i remember after being grabbed from behind outside work one night (potential mugger)After that i wasnt afraid of anybody (within reason)

first i feel sorry about what happened to your friend, and believe its not the first time ive heard something like that, and even I as a male, experience indecent proposals from bloody perverts. that's how desperate some people could go. see, i really dont wanna be radical and stereotypical again on this, but when I was in London for a short visit, I watched one talk show on TV, and one of the guests said something like "In the world today, the more religious a country is, the more unstable it gets, economically, socially, and MORALLY". In other words, the more you deprive people, the more they go berserk.

The best way to get rid of it i'd say.... is "Self-Defense". You could not rely on anything else, specially if you are alone. Do whatever it takes to defend yourself. If the world is a jungle, then this part of the world is the snakepit.

i suggest to all you girls to buy discreet self defense items befor eyou leave your home country.

For the case of all female kabayans, buy that thing that security guards are using (the one they put on their pocket), the spray. You can buy it in Recto or those places where they sell ROTC/CAT goods, and security guard paraphernalias.

There are also some short knives disguised as Pens, intended and designed really for self defense. Once you are all equipped, and this thing happens to you, kick their perverted asses hard! and make them suffer. Strike their eyes, or hit them in between their legs.

But of course again, prevention is the best medicine.As much as possible, avoid instances that could lead to that situation. ;)

why this kind of issue hardly raised or posted in news paper??? why Authorities have to hide the fact that there are many and most likely everyday everyhour of sexual harrasment happening in this country?? they should make national campaign to stop domestic vialonce and sexual harrasment. Every woman has the right to say no, I just think as there are large numbers of foreign women selling themselves for money, so all women are automaticallly tarred with the same brush.

Unfortunately, flight attendants are well known for their free life style of living, although I don't want to generalise about this, but it is a well known fact in Europe.

On the other hand if this is not reported to the police how can they protect the women from such behaviour.

CB yeah...i also realised this negative fact about free lifestyle of the flight attendants. Knowing some of myself they do have free spirit. guess work tensions dealing with different kind of people is stressed them to much and when they have time to relax they just go bananas...

I really have something to say here, I've been a lurker on QL and always feel bad when people say it's the local Qataris who are harrassing/raping? the women.

We all live in a country where 10 years ago you would not see any women on the street, even the foreigner women did not go out much. All you saw was men! I think the country still has a 4:1 ratio of men:women (many are low-pay workers).

Many of the men here (of many different nationalities) are woman-hungry, and they think that any woman that smiles "wants them". Unfortunatelt you never know what on a man's mind. Just like anywhere else, you cannot know the good guys from the bad guys.

Self-defence, running and screaming, are the only options for a woman walking alone (esp. at night).There are a lot of good people out there so running for help may be an option (but you still never know).

Local woman do not go out alone at night for the same reason.

p.s. nobody walks in Qatar, we only use cars,even for a 100m trip.

p.p.s. yes I drive a white landcruiser.

Precaution, when you are in Rome do what the Romans do, when you are in Qatar, Do what Qataries do...don't walk alone, or always witha male relative, brother, son, father...

AS I NOTICED FROM THE POST SHE CAN'T EVEN OPEN THE SUBJECT UP WITH HER SUPERIORS IN QATAR AIRWAYS BECAUSE QA WANT NO TROUBLES WITH LOCALS, AND SHE DOESN'T WANT TO BE RELEASED FROM THE WORK THAT SHE REALLY WORKED HARD TO GET.

DON'T YOU THINK THAT FIGHTING WITH SOMEONE IN THE STREET (LOCAL) EVEN IF DEFENDING HERSELF WOULD GET HER OUT OF THIS COUNTRY, AS WE ALL KNOW THERE IS A HUGE BIASE IN DEALING BETWEEN NATIONALS AND EXPATRIATES HERE, SO WE'LL END UP WITH THE SAME RESULT, AND SHE WILL LOOSE HER JOB.

I THINK BEING IN A GROUP WHILE MOVING IS MUCH BETTER, AND AVOIDING THE DESERTED STREETS AS MUCH AS WE CAN.

I think its foolish for your friend to not report this matter to the local authorities especially her employer. She should ask/request to be relocated if possible or have the company beef up its security around the compound....if nothing is done, then talk to the other girls and see if you can sign a petition requsting for this.

Build up a defense. Get a group together on your offtime and invite those who can teach defense or educate. Simple research on the internet will show you some defense tactics. Do a search on making your own pepper spray, its on youtube! Even carrying a rock in your hand will do. Educate and prepare and I'm sorry to say, trust no one. If defending your person is equivalent to losing job, then please look for another job. Your safety, peace of mind and life are not worth the crappy job with unsupportive employers.

Someone could possibly inform newspaper of this thread? Is there a women's support group here?
