traffic police dept.

Dear QLers, I know that everyday someone posts something about the traffic in Doha, but this time I had a really bad experience and I decided to share with all of you.
Today afternoon I was coming via E-ring (from airport towards Industrial Area), and behind the Woqod petrol station I made a legal deviation (parallel road) to avoid the traffic jam at the intersection. For my surprise, I was stopped by two police officers, of course they barely spoken english, and they were fining dozens of cars for illegal turn. While I was waiting to sort it out, I noticed what they were talking about: many cars were doing a move by inside the petrol station, in a point where is forbidden to turn. But the problem is, many guys, including myself, were coming via the correct path, but because of the huge amount of cars at that time they decided to stop and fine almost everyone coming from that direction! You can figure out that I gave up trying to explain to them, and I left the place, probably receiving a fine (i'm afraid to see how much!) in the next couple of days.
Just a week ago I was fined for parking in a small street (close to gulf cinema intersection on C-ring, besides IBQ bank), but there was no information of forbidden park as well, I felt unfair and them I proceeded to Traffic Dept, Airport area. Reaching there, the same problem: no english, no politeness, poor explanation (although I had pictured the place to prove my point). New waste of time!
My point to you all is: of course there is no talk with speeding and not obeying traffic laws, but correct citizens, no matter the nationality, should not pay for others mistake, and the government of Qatar, if intends to show some respect, should immediately improve the quality of services of the Traffic Dept, by better training, better english, etc. It's very frustrating to pay someone else's bills! Please don't stay quiet, always fight for your rights and let's show them we don't accept things so easily!

Because of this kind of mentality is that things never change. And by the way I'm a very cool guy, I just don't like to be treated as a fool.

Traffic Dept and all MOI departments are among the best government entities that were properly developed recently.

You are advised to communicae with MOI through their website and file a complaint. Then you can judge them.

Here is the link:

And btw. Do you expect that every country you visit you should expect government/federal service personnel speak your language?

Can understand your frustration, especially when they don't even trying to speak English, when they are capable of doing so. Most of these so called lower level police wardens are non Qataris Arabs..

if this are among the best govt. entities, I don't wanna know which ones are the worse...
By the way, I already filled complaints before (I've been here for a while, it wasn't my first problem my dear...), and guess what, no reply, probably they are still translating... Lol!
And for last, english is not my mother language (I speak another 3), but is the language that I was hired to work with, and is the language the qatari govt. says in every site is "well spoken" here... Just another local joke! But you came here defending them, you probably work for them, so please use your influence and tell them the truth about this country!

but expecting them to speak proper English is unrealistic. This is an Arabic country and we are the ones that should conform. Whenever I have had to go to any government agency (and yes I have gotten tickets as well as gone to court) I quickly learned to take an Arabic speaker with me.

flyer said thanks for the advice, deedee ...

I will start doing this. And in your case helped?

deedee's picture

deedee said Oh yes, ...

it certainly does not hurt. That does not mean I got out of the ticket though. I still had to pay for the minor accident I caused. I have found the traffic dept people some of the most polite of all government employees. If you have a serious disagreement about paying your fine you are by all means invited to speak to the captain. He will listen and then decide your fate. I have had all my points taken off on 2 separate occasions just by asking nicely.

For at least, the officers at the Police Station should have communication English, knowing that Qatar is full of expatriates (thats what they rely on to build this country). They are just lucky that their avaition people are proficient in this. Sadly, who are we to speak about this anyway?
