Excess baggage - Qatar Airways

Susanne's picture

Hey buddies, finally the flight is booked and I will arrive next week. What gives me some kind of a headache is my excess baggage - they ask for 33.00 Euros per kilo - has anybody a good idea how to deal with them in order to pay less? Maybe any chance of a rebate when I tell them I'm gonna live in Doha?
Thanks for your help!

Check to see if you send the luggage by air cargo if its cheaper.

KellysHeroes said Try Unaccompanied Luggage ...

A bit more expensive than cargo but much cheaper than excess luggage. Easier to handle. Just walk in to the cargo section with your luggage, show them your ticket and they will take care of everything. You should not need a shipping agent to do this.
Also apply for Privilage Club membership to start accuulation points for your travels and later you will get a bonus of 10 extra free Kgs Luggage.

Hey, I guess you better dont keep hopes coz last time I was coming to Doha, they said its strictly not allowed to let go excess baggage or they loose their jobs. So only if you are a real charmer and can convince them then go ahead with or forget it. I contacted a local cargo agent who couriered my cargo at a rate which is 1/4 of what they charge at airport.

My buddie, just back from a dive trip, found it cheaper to fly business class than to pay the excess baggage fees.

Susanne, do you have company sponsorship? if so ask if they will pay, mine paid for an extra 10 kg, on top of my ticket and in excess to my air-freight and sea freight.

I have a better plan, bring a golfbag this will automaticly allow you to take more luggage. ( be sure there is at least one gulfclub in there so you can say, this is a golfbag) Works for me !

You can send it per air cargo but go in advance so as not to have any disappointments when leaving Germany.

Unfortunately, in Doha it might be easier to get round the Kilos but in Gemrnay no chance at all.

Your advice is wasted because now they have a special thingy which actually measures the size of the hand baggage.

Found this works.
check lagguage in way before flight even 5hrs before flying you can check in leave airport and return just in time to clear passport control and hop on the plane. done this heaps of times as they tend not worry to much about excesss early on in the peice its only latter on when the majority of people are checking in.

This may or may not go on the same flight as you (maybe not even by the same airline) but is certainly cheaper. However, I am not sure if you need a residence permit in Qatar to collect it as you do with freight. We shipped items from Abu Dhabi to Qatar by road and we had to address it to our son-in-law in Qatar who had a residence permit.

...thanks a lot! Unfortunately, thew staff here in Berlin was not too helpful when I called and asked for the unaccompanied baggage - they don't do that. My company will not pay for it and, bad luck, they pay the flight so I can't earn miles. I'll myself dress up a bit and smile the best smile I have! Teeth are already polished;-)

My husband's company pays for flights all over the world for him when he travels for business and he gets ever single mile. The ticket is in your name, you will get the miles.

Doesn't matter who has paid for the flight, you can still get the miles, register for a membership and take the card along to check-in, they will credit you there

Mmm! Exactly on the miles issue. Even though your company paid the flight, you most certainly can have the miles. The only difference is that your mileage club isn't already on the ticket. So you will have to either have your number at check-in, or just your card. When you get to the counter, have a neat package with your ticket/receipt, passport, permanent visa printoff, and your mileage card. They know what to do from there.

Qatar Airways. If you're moving to Doha, I strongly, strongly suggest you go onto Qatar Airways and register for their air miles program. You will get much better benefits through this than with crediting the miles to another Star Alliance card (Lufthansa/United, etc.) For instance, you only need 6,000 miles to take a free round-trip in the gulf on economy. So your trip from Germany will almost put you at enough miles to go to Dubai for free.

You wouldn't need your physical card at the counter next week, just your number. So after you register you get your card number right away. Most will provide you with a temporary card you can print and show. This will work fine for you. In fact, you could even send the membership stuff to your new Doha address.

I just brought my family here in Qatar. We were 35 kilos over our baggage weight limit at check in. (Our limit was 70 kilos and our checked in baggage weighed 105 kilos!)
I asked the check in counter personnel nicely to allow us the excess baggage since most of them were for our boy.
And to my surprise, before boarding, they even suggested to check in our carry in luggage since they saw me carrying my laptop, two cameras, one stuffed toy, one baby backpack full of toy cars and one carry in luggage while my wife had one baby bag, one bag containing all her jewelries, her shoulder bag and one carry in luggage.
We did not pay a single cent for all the excess baggage. So try to ask nicely.
