A cool campaign for workers

Members of an online community volunteer group began a campaign yesterday to distribute cold drinks and other items to protect labourers working outdoors from the summer heat.
After being suggested by a member of the Qatar Living Volunteer Group, ‘Pitstop,’ the campaign began with a collection session on Thursday afternoon, where group members received an overwhelming response from charitable members of the Doha community.
And yesterday, members distributed some of the items throughout Doha, claiming to have given items to around 1,000 labourers during their drive.
‘Speed’ – the leader of the volunteer group – told Gulf Times about the campaign, and said that many members had felt sympathy for the people who are continuing to work outside, despite the soaring temperatures and increased humidity.
The collection evening was very successful, and the group received some 300 caps, 200 T-shirts, 200 wet towels, 15 water coolers and a large selection of different energy, glucose and soft drinks as well as water.
Members distributed most of the items yesterday, but due to the large amount of items donated, they will also be handing out the rest of the objects next week.
“The campaign is still running, and we will once again be hosting a collection session in the carpark of KFC and QIB on airport road between 7pm and 8pm on Thursday,” said ‘Speed.’

He also referred to a blood donation campaign which is being launched tomorrow from 4-8pm. Up to 50 group members will be visiting the Hamad Medical Corporation Blood Donation Unit, and other people interested in donating are welcome to join them.

Therefore, we will be still collecting donation on 02.07.2009 (QIB Parking next to KFC) at the airport road

I cannot but humbly thank you, your efforts are so well praised. You're inspiring others to do the same on QL or outside of its boundaries, I know some good activists here who would like to be left unknown, but hand in hand working with you.

Brit.... as you know we do not accept cash. What I can do ...if you can PM me the items you wish to buy I will buy on your behalf and later I will provide you with the receipt.
Still we encourage people to purchase by themselves and deliver the donations at our collection point.

I wonder though if we should be looking at long term solutions.. Perhaps cold water dispensers at key locations... Is that possible ?

This is a nice way to start ...This is a nice way to start a day.
You shouldn't thank us - as we are not doing favors for anyone. The feeling is very rewarding when you give the needy and see their appreciative reaction to whatever simple thing they are getting.
Inshallah I will be seeing you today from 4 - 5 at the Blood Donation Unit at HMC and on Thursday as well at the Parking Lot.

SPPED and PITSTOP...Duty ...I don't consider these efforts as charity, it's duty. We're all needy in some way, and we need comforted. The intensity is relative though.
I hope the number of volunteers grows larger.

I think in Industrial area we have to consider some permanent Electric water coolers ...
I strongly believe and it's the believe of all the believers that if we take a step in the name of GOD to help HIS needy people HE makes our ways easy.
Till date this has been always a Miracle for Us (QLVG).... We all Volunteers think of anything we like to do to help the needy people, we reach our target within no time and without any hazzel.
From where all the help comes only God knows...
God is Great :-)

I have always stressed ...I have always stressed Health & Safety and Welfare of the Labourers to my Contractors as a serious issue in every progress meeting. They are providing them shaded areas and drinking water.
I applaud your efforts for these labourers, and also think that some of the responsibilities lies with the comapanies that hire them, and they should be accountable for the welfare of these workers.

I agree that God is great.
I agree that responsibilities lie with the person(s) that the companies answer to.
Perhaps, it is our duty not only to give (if possible) but to pray to God that the companies and their bosses see that their laborers are treated fairly and with compassion.
Until then, we will do what we can to compensate for the lack of basic needs by the laborers' companies.

cynbob ..Winter Uniform for Guards ...Would you believe that our building guards dress in a couple of layers, in the winter? I've never seen them in a jacket/coat to warm them up, which means their company doesn’t provide them with this piece for winter uniform?!
It wasn't until last year, when another QLer pointed out that he and his wife donated winter jackets to workers in construction sites, otherwise I probably wouldn't have noticed ours.
I owe him a lot (cannot remember his name), he just doesn't know it.

A Suggestion ...KFC at airport road is on one side of Doha & I live on other side in Khuraitiyat. Anyways my piont is that may be there are others who also want to volunteer or donate but can't go as far as Airport.Can the collection spot be in mid, some where?

It was great meeting the ...It was great meeting the QLVG members all enthusiastic and gung ho about QVLG.
Well I agree that while we should keep on doing what we believe is right without worrying too much about the consequences...what I was thinking if somebody from us can actually check what are the provisions in the Law for labourers/ technicians working in sites/ open areas - what are the existing laws in terms of - continuous exposure, rest, drinking water/ sanitation facilities etc. If we can find that our perhaps we can start visting these companies and educate them about the needs of laborers and provisions in the Law.

Perhaps the lesson that need to be taught is even more basic than that: How to treat people with dignity and respect by following the laws that are already in place. :(
