Neda soltan - Rachel Corrie

CuriousButDetermined's picture

President Barack Obama describes the death of Neda Soltan as 'heartbreaking'...

a photo of Neda is distributed worlwide to see how brutal Iranian regime is!! what a heartful president!

Why were there no mass coverage of the martyrdom of Rachel Corrie who gave her life defending, not her life, other people's rights of life!!

While I feel sorry to see Neda's death who may have not known how her march would end up, I am stunned on how someone could face death knowingly as did Rachel.

Why did the US government not give Rachel the recognition she deserves?

Was there nothing fundamentally unjust leading to Rachel's death?

Would you compare it to the publicity that Neda got including statements and critics by government officials?

I still remeber that case

u think they will give Rachel Corrie that much of importancy ..The media is governed by Israel we all know that ,also the Israel Gov. is supported by American Gov. so the story is parried away so no one will know how ugly the Israel regime is ... and how Prave lady that lady Rachel Corrie who faced the deth face to face for the sake of OTHERS(Palatines).

But when the media spotlight Neda soltan story they are showing the ugly face of the IRANIAN regime which is manly against the MIGHTY ISRAEL ....i think that the message is very clear

What a world is controlled by bunch of ...............

I think you have to make a distinction between the US and Europe. The US is pro Israel no doubt but Europe is different. Europe does not care for either side. (Germany is scared to say anything at all due to their history...)

You're kidding, right? You don't remember the play, the songs, the book, the TV and film documentaries about Rachel Corrie? You don't remember some Palestinians objecting to all the publicity about Rachel since she wasn't the only one to die in Gaza that day as a result of Israeli aggression but was the only American? We in American certainly remember Rachel Corrie and thank God that there was and continues to be a ton of publicity about this brave girl.

habib_nuh said Whose kidding? ...

I was in American then, and really - nobody but the Muslims and the aware among the left-wing knew who Rachel Corrie was. Ask anyone in America now her name and they will not know.
Ask anyone in America about Neda, and they are likely to tell you that she was killed while wrapped in an American flag, carrying a cross, and singing "Jesus loves me." Especially if they watch Fox News.
Remember, these were the people that thought Saddam was going to blow up the world in 45 minutes.
Lets not forget that, according to the news, the main method of protest the Iranians are using is shouting "Allahuakbar" from their roofs at night.
That does not sound like the sort of slogan Americans have been friendly to of late.

Mandi,

It is clear from youtube and googling that many people, in and outside America, know who Rachel was so I don't disagree with you here.

However, comparing Neda's case to Rachel's, Could you assess the recognition US administration devouted to each?

Have you heard the US administration condemn the killing of civilians, how heartbreaking it is and unjustice associated with such an act?

exiledsaint,
US and Europe governments will differ and agree based on interests, let alone Arabic governments which are worst of them all. I believe UK govt is not doing a friendly job to Iran. UK was described in Iran's leader's recent speech as the worst enemy. There seems to be consensus amongst most European countries on how to face Iran.

Both ladies were given wide coverage. Although much of the media is influenced by the Jewish lobby, Rachel did get her fair share of the news.

You will find that in the long run, Neda will be forgotten much earlier than Rachel.

The UK Iranian stuff is such bullshit. Its a classic totitaliarian, (and I mean to spell it that way) trick to try and blame someone else for their problems. Its nothing more than a diversion

The answer to their problems is simple, give their people more freedom. Why should some religous zealot decide what they can watch, what they can do and what they can say? Its all about power and corruption. Sad, so sad for such a great people.

Happy Happy said Curious.....Rachel Corrie ...

I've watched the heart wrenching tragedy of martyr-ess Rachel Corrie on an Arabic channel, in one of Khawater خواطر program episodes , hosted by Ahmed Alshuqairi.

My initial response would be no, she did not receive half of the media attention Neda has been receiving to date, but reading the above responses, I'm intrigued to know how much others knew about her, and which channels covered her story.

PM said Actually there was HUGE coverage about Rachel Corrie ...

when it happened. But the Bush administration certainly did not highlight the incident in the way Obama has this one. I disagree with Habib, because the story of Rachel Corrie spread far beyond Muslims and Lefties. In fact, I remember my parents bringing it up (and they are as right wing as you can get). I think it's an exaggeration to say nobody heard of this. There was quite a lot written about her.

You would agree they are both tragic, wouldn't you CBD? Or is what happened in Iran okay since it wasn't the Israelis but Muslims committing this barbaric act?
