Upto 8Mbps broadband now in Qatar - Nice!

qatari's picture

From a Q-Tel release:

Broadband Internet users in Qatar can now enjoy a wider range of speeds and more competitive pricing than ever before, with the launch of two new speed plans for Qtel’s ADSL service.

Customers now have a wider choice of options when they choose to surf the Internet, with 4Mbps or 8Mbps now available for those who want to enjoy an even faster browsing experience.

The higher speeds will enable customers to download films, music and games faster and more easily. The enhanced speeds now available are among the many benefits delivered through Qtel’s major ADSL upgrade, which began on 1 April 2009 as part of Qtel’s ongoing ’Broadband Anywhere’ initiative.

The new 4Mbps speed is available for QR400 a month, with the 8Mbps plan costing QR600. Both new speeds are subject to technical feasibility.

As an added bonus, Qtel has reduced the cost of the standard 1Mbps and 2Mbps packages by QR100 each per month. This represents a 50 percent decrease in the monthly charge for 1Mbps customers and a 33 percent drop for 2Mbps customers.

In May this year, Qtel doubled the speed for all ADSL and Mozaic TV+ customers for free, as part of a series of enhancements to the company’s Broadband services.

Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, commented: “We are delighted to offer these new speed plans to customers who want an even faster browsing experience. Our top-end 8Mbps plan will make it easier and faster than ever for people to enjoy downloads and video streaming at anytime. We will continue to invest in the expansion of our Broadband network, to increase availability and to ensure that speeds will be able to keep pace with the growing demands of new applications.”
Existing ADSL customers can upgrade simply by calling 111 and new customers should visit any Qtel Shop to apply for service. Further information is available at Qtel’s website at www.qtel.com.qa

Nice, I'll probably subscribe after I come from vacation.

They don't say anything about the upload speed, currently 638k on a 4MBps... does it become 1.2M?

nice one. but if they will still give us THOMSON TG585 v7 it will become useless as this modem/router wont even last for 1 month. Qtel warranty for this is just one month. After that they are charging 200 for a replacement. So I end up bbuying from carrefour.

Why is internet so expensive in Doha? My U.S. 4mbps internet is $35... not even close to the QR400 Qtel charges.

We are not as well-connected as the US. Yes it's expensive, but I won't compare US prices.

Arabian73 said It doesn't worth it IMO ...

You are only connected to Qtel network with 8 Mbps, but that doesn't mean you could reach this speed in reality.

Qtel isn't well connected to the internet via known NSPs in the EU, and the US, such as UUNet/MCI, AT&T, they are still sticked with pool teleglobe last time I checked.

NSP stands for Network Services Providers.

bleu said Arabian, The 4MBps, allows ...

Arabian,
The 4MBps, allows downloads at 380k, which is consistent with 4MBps.

I'd assume that 8MBps would allow at least 700k.

notnapster said bleu, yes. That is right. ...

bleu, yes. That is right. Else they wouldn't advertise an 8mbps connection.

The subject to technical feasibility, is the distance of your house/office to Q-Tel's RLU (Remote location unit). The RLU is usually a small one room unmanned concrete structure or a porta cabin. The maximum distance for an 8mbps is around 1-1.5km from the RLU. The longer the distance from the RLU, the lesser is the bandwidth offered.

Arabian73's picture

Arabian73 said bleu ok let's look at these facts. ...

Please be aware it's not MBps but Mbps

- MB/s as megabytes per second
- Mbps as megabits per second

1 MB/s = 8 Mbps...

So a 8 Megabits per second internet line can download 1 Megabyte of data per second.

Beside, the upload speed should be 640 Kbps, to have reliable download speed of 8Mbps.

Now, let's say you could reach the 7Mbps download speed to _well_ connected sites to Qtel backbones.

Would you achieve the same result with sites not well connected to NSPs Qtel uses?

Please test your ADSL line now with different locations in the EU and the USA here, http://www.speedtest...

PS: these days Qtel connectivity to the internet is having too much hassles and issues, I hope it's temporary case.

good luck!!!

last time i check qtels business culture still needs a lot of reshaping. their current company mantra is
"customer service, what customer service?".

try calling 111 and you will know what im talking about.

the lack of business competition did it. i just hope that when vodafone comes in they will shape up.

The area feasibility for 4 MB is NOT more than 2000 m or 2 Km & for 8 MB is 0.8 Km or 800 m ONLY.

djdesi said My internet bill is 400QR a ...

My internet bill is 400QR a month which is like approx. 110 US $ a month. With this I get a 4Mbps download and around 50kbps upload :(

My seedbox (a dedicated server) bill is like 230 QR which is like 63 US $ with a 11Mbps down and 9Mbps upload approx, and now I am plainning to get a 1Gbps server just over 350-400 QR :)

Its sad, but its true and it kills me every time I pay my Qtel Bill for the internet :( and when I read Qtel's vision which is to be among Top 20 Telecommunications company by the year 2020. Even after having all this infrasturcture and finances at hand, we cannot enjoy cheap internet. I dont think that I will be upgrading to 8Mb package and pay 600 QR for a slow upload connection. Qtel should also think on having a DSL connection along with ADSL.. :) Upload speeds are important too and not just the download speeds.

Think Qtel ... plz think...

Regards,

DJ

Checking with speedtest.net, qtel's connection to the rest of the world averages 1.5mbps and we are all sharing this. So how can we get 2mbps or more? India and the Philippines have internet backbones of 2mbps, that's according to speedtest.net again.
