Why No signal timers at Signals?

Why there are No Signal Timers in Doha showing clearly how many seconds before Red signal ? Now motorists keep guessing and getting caught on cameras , paying QAR 6000 fine unnecessarily . If the authorities had Timers showing the No of Seconds to RED SIGNAL , motorists can stop accordingly .

Seriously though, the damn thing flashes green for a few seconds before it turns amber for a couple seconds then red.
You honestly have to be a complete numpty to get tagged by the red light. If it is flashing green, slow the hell down.
If you are trying to race through because you are in a hurry, then that means you are already late and few more minutes won't matter.

Flashing green, then yellow, ...Flashing green, then yellow, then red. What more do you want? Do you even want voice assistance in your car to tell you about the flashing green, and then tell you to slow down? Or how about a paging system on every junction telling everyone to slow down because it's yellow?
You managed to pass the driving test, yet a simple road sign, you require EXTRA assistance? Did you pay for your license to get it approved? Jeez!!!!
It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!

If you are driving below the speed limit, and watching the signal, there is NO WAY you could get caught by a red light, unless you are a 'complete numpty'. Seriously.

if you are concentrating ...on front cars; and suddenly you saw orange signals flashing at traffic lights; I am sure one don't know how many more times will it continue to flash orange and getting RED.
Precautinary, people stop at orange rather giving a month salary to traffic department in fines.
I agree, we shud have a timer at signals.

Signal timers are useful in ...Signal timers are useful in countries where they are trying to save fuel.. people shut off their engines when signal is red and their is some time left be4 signal turns green, since in gulf they dont really care about preserving oil, they dont think that way..... For just passing thru a signal when its green, the green light blinks way too many times to warn u..

Victory_278692 said
a.k.a. very good question..... ...a signal timer is a countdown digital timer display machines attached to the signal post showing in how many seconds the RED will be flashed to STOP your car and similarly, in how many seconds the green will be flashed to 'GO'.....this will keep all drivers more alert.
Here, fuel is cheaper But fines are exhorbitant.
rockduke said
why you have to.. ...stop engine just for 2 or 3 mins on signal..what if your car didnt turns on when it is already green? your just creating a traffic..we dont need timer, DISCIPLINE is the best which should start form within oneself.

Even for 2-3 mins at every ...Even for 2-3 mins at every signal switching off an engine saves a lot of fuel.. Engine takes a lot of fuel in Idle running... Then again since here its too cheap nobody cares.

so that's why it's so ...so that's why it's so slow... you turn off your engines????
lusitano said
sandeepkadian, You got it ...sandeepkadian,
You got it wrong. Timers are not installed for you to switch off your engine. Engines consume a lot fuel in Idle running than to start it!
timers are installed to allow you and the person behind you to calculate if you have time to pass or you must stop and the person behind you will also expect your reaction (when appropriate) and won't hate you for stopping and wont bump into you!
sandeepkadian said
Lusitano ...If the engine is kept idling for more than 60 seconds, it consumes more fuel than switching off and switching on the engine. Idling causes a lot of internal damage to your engine too. Not to mention the harmful green house effect causing gases emitted during that time duration.

Lusitano ...Just one link about problems caused by engines running idle.

There are plenty more articles u can find stating the damage of idling for more than 30 seconds on the net.

sandeepkadian, The ...sandeepkadian,
The additional initial acceleration when you start your vehicle, will consume more fuel than the 60 seconds on in idle running.
sandeepkadian said
U will not accelerate if ur ...U will not accelerate if ur engine is on in idle???? In both cases vehicle will move from 0 Kph... or i think so anyway. U dont wanna switch off ur engine its fine.. I hope people do though.
" Your Faith is what you believe, Not what you know"
SAMAEL said
30 seconds to 2 minutes is ...30 seconds to 2 minutes is the cross-over point for fuel consumption. Older cars take more gas to start than newer ones, so turn off your late-model cars earlier.
The trade-off is for increased tailpipe emissions. After 30 seconds to a minute the catalytic converter cools off (yes even in this weather). On restart, the car produces higher levels of NOX and CO until the converter reheats.
To summarize: turning off saves fuel but creates more smog. Idling burns more fuel, but keeps the air cleaner.
Swings and round-a-bouts really, pick yer poison

a car battery Doesn't tend to last too long in a hot dusty climate like this anyway.

So apparently if you own a ...So apparently if you own a car with fuel injection, it is better to stop the engine, but if you have an older car with carburetors, it's better to leave it running.
By the maths of the article below, cutting out 10 minutes of idling a day, 5 days a week, all year long, will save you about 27 riyals worth of petrol. Per year.
Wow.

Bleu ...Just go to the link below and deduce how much money can be saved by simply turning off the engine at signals in a single city.
http://timesofindia....
FYI 1000 Crore INR is equal to around 770 Million QR.
I guess you are very rich without a care for environment but not everyone is so blessed.
And for the others just read this article which mentions Kia motors developing system where the engine will automatically turn off at traffic signals when you stop. Dont think they will invest so much in this technology if it was so useless.

so let me get this straight sandeepkadian... ...turn off your car at each stop light...restart the car, turn back on the a/c and get going BEFORE the guy or the next FOUR guys behind you start honking??? not going to happen...

I know scarlett it aint ...I know scarlett it aint gonna happen in Qatar, no driver has the patience and as i said earlier fuel is so cheap here that no one cares about saving it.. But we use this system in my home city, all signals there are with timers. 90 % of the drivers switch off their engines at signals and the pollution there is at one of the lowest levels in India.
u dont have to restart ur engine after signal turns green, u can switch it on with few secs remaining so the guy behind doesn't honk.

Exactly Scarlett. It's bad ...Exactly Scarlett.
It's bad enough when the idiots behind you beep one nano-second after the light turns green, without having to worry that your car starts first time and fast enough.
Luckily I'm rich enough to afford 0.1 riyals per day to keep my engine running.
Scarlett said
well fubar... ...that nanosecond in between the light turning green and the guy 4 cars behind you honking, is the definition of a "split second"...always makes me laugh.
And, I am one of those that stops on the orange/yellow lights...if they've been orange for a few seconds...I've seen the result of a T bone accident...and its NOT pretty!!! It can very easily result in someone getting killed...usually NOT the person who is running the light...

It is not advisable in GCC country to OFF the car and RESTART.. ...at signals.
In India, for public interest, they suggest to save fuel by off the engine and restart; where the average speed of the car is not above 50-60 kph.....most of the time under severe traffic conditions.

27QR/yr?????? Sorry for ...27QR/yr??????
Sorry for being pedantic, petrol is not at QR1.05/l in Qatar.
0.156 gallons/hour = 0.59l/hour= 0.0983333 l/10min
5 days a week => 0.0983333*5 l/wk = 0.4916667 l/wk
52 weeks/yer => 0.491667=25.5666666 l/year!
QR 0.8 per liter = QR20.45/year.
WOW!!!! You're saving a lot of money!!! almost QR21 per year!!!!!!
Sandeep: people in India have a much lower standard of living, and the petrol prices may be much higher, so it may make sense to do it there, but it never makes sense here.
Victory: In India, people should stop driving cars when bicycles are good enough for most people. Save money and the environment...
sandeepkadian said
Bleu ...Ya u r right, you should waste fuel in qatar till the price here also reaches the same level as the rest of the world, its actually closer to 4 QR per liter in India. Its not just about the price also, u damage ur own car engine too by doing it, but then again u will say u can buy new one.. the cost of a car i am sure is not worth the hassle of switching engine on and off to you. But remember the damage it causes to the environment, when global warmimg is such a big problem, you can do your bit by reducing the amount of poisonous gases in the air.. I m sorry but i have been involved with too many green earth projects and feel a bit strongly about it.
If people start riding bicycles elsewhere, how will Qatar and the rest in gulf make money???? Dont think there is any area of expertise in gulf except selling oil. so not good for u if we start doing it in India

Sorry Bleu, I was using the ...Sorry Bleu, I was using the figure of 8.9 gallons per year quoted in the Slate article, which is 33.7 liters. That's how I reached the cost of 27 riyals.
What we can agree on is that it is an insignificant amount compared to the annual expenditure on petrol.
If you want to ACTUALLY save petrol and reduce carbon emissions in a MEANINGFUL way, then drive less and use public transport.
