Thanks, KellysHeroes, but where is Sofitel? I've been looking at the map but I can't find it.
Just curious, how did you find out about these stores? I was expecting an Asian to reply. :-)

good morning

unfortunately, some threads are posted in an off peak time when very few QLers are online and within few hours the thread would not show in the "New forum topics" list.

Have been in Doha for decades and I keep checking places whether new or old.

Anyhow, you should know Ramada signal. Going from there towards down town (as if you are coming from industrial area), you will meet The Center round-about, keep going staright all the way, then you will notice Jaidah flyover, then traffic lights, then another traffic lights (Sofitel, now Mercure hotel intersection). At that signal if you go right or left, you will notice few Chinese stores.

Good luck

I had a chinese friend who mother was very superstitious and she would make him do some weird things on the Chinese new year.

Like he couldnt cut his hair or shave for a week. Unfortunately we had a wedding to attend a few days after the new year and he came looking like a freakin hobo.

Then he had to attend the 3 big dinners 1) A day prior to the eve 2) new years day 3) the day after. He had to attend all of em, nobody outside of the family could enter the house. He told me that his mom makes some dishes on the new year that she doesnt make the rest of the year.

The best he couldnt drive for a week as driving meant using gas and that meant fading away your luck. So had to use bus for a week and damn it was cold in that month.

I am haunted by my past, ashamed of my present and afraid about my future

I don't think I should pm a perfect stranger - she might freak out. :-) But thanks anyway for the suggestion.

Knox - I've never heard about the 'no driving' rule or non-members of the family not being able to enter the house. Interesting...

You have every right to make assumptions. I can say for sure that the hair thing is true and so is the dinner thing. I can also tell about the figurines that my chinese friend used to buy. He believed in their mystical powers.

Are you really chinese? I thought you are indonesian. Do you speak mandarin and Chinese. Not much difference between them if I remember correctly.

i understand a bit of Mandarin. Mandarin is the national languages in China ... then each area have their own dialect, such as Cantonese or Hokkian. The writing is the same, but the pronounciation totally different.

My ancestor came to Indonesia 4th generation ago. I dont know wether you know it or not ... but during President Soeharto ... chinese in Indonesia not allow their self identity. All chinese who migrate to Indonesia have to choose an Indonesian name, not allow to speak mandarin in the public, or celebrate any chinese festival. Every chinese in Indonesia must obtain this special paperwork call SBKRI (Surat Bukti Kewarganegaraam Republic Indonesia) which is means proof of Indonesian citizenship. Without this you wont be able to apply for passport, which is means you cant leave the country.

So to cut long story short ... i am chinese by race and Indonesian by nationality :D

Hi,

Neither have I heard about the 'no driving' thing. By contrast, HK chinese like to drive/walk around city or an area to 'run a big luck' for the new year. Probably on 7-Feb you will see some cars running around D-ring! (not me as I don't drive ...)

It seems no one mentions the most important thing ... red pockets! Married people or senior should give singles and junior red pockets as a way to share luck and blessing. If you want to share your luck, please do contact me :o)
