Canon unveils new EOS 7D.

every_mothers_nightmare's picture

Canon just announced their new EOS 7D small frame sensor DSLR camera today. Features include a new 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, full HD shooting capability, new 19-zone AF system, and an ISO range expandable to 12,800.

The sensor is a new design with greater efficiency, which may compensate for the smaller pixels in terms of noise performance. At 18MP, the EOS 7D is the current “pixel champion” for the crop sensor format. The EOS 7D also has a new metering system, the Focus Color Luminance metering system (iFCL), which measures focus, color and luminance across 63 zones, keeping exposure levels stable even as the light source changes.

I don't keep up to date as long as my gear is sufficient to fill my needs, and I suspect it'll be a loong time before I need to upgrade the 5D mkII. Sounds good with the firmware upgrade, Baldrick. I've only used the video once, but it's nice to get the option.

The 7D does look like a great camera, though. Look's like Canon's still got it

Baldrick the video option is priceless...

Especially 'quick events' ...like the shooting of a cannon (opeing of fast during Ramdan). It would be very difficult ... almost impossible to get the shot with the cannonball fire leaving the cannon.

Another one is when shooting at Athletic events....I could never get the guy on the pole vault when he is right on top of the bar!

With the Video its really easily done ....one can capture the frame from the video....

The experience with video also differs from handycam especially when zooming with Wide Angle or Tele Photo Lens....its almost like in Professional Movies.

may i ask just why add a video feature to a DSLR camera? i think it's defeating the purpose, video should be just for a handycam or a digicam that's why these gadgets were made.

jackmohan2007 said somwerNdmiddle .... ...

somwerNdmiddle ....The major plus is because of the "detachable Lens" and you can add different type of lens according to the shoot.

The video speaks a different language if you shoot it in wide angle....try it...

The best thing its almost seamless you dont have to change any settings (at least in Nikon D90) press the video switch and it shoots in video...press the button again to stop ....you are ready to shoot again in Photo mode....so easy.

Cargodog said I agree, SNM, that video ...

I agree, SNM, that video shouldn't be on a DLSR. But the world is moving towards "all-in-one" gadgets on every front. It was only a matter of time for the DSLR. The reason for this, and this is just my guess, is that it's still not possible to make a camera with good quality that shoots at 24 fps, but with HD video you can get that "defining moment" from a sporting event and just take the "defining frame". That will be good enough for a newspaper. That way the papers don't need to have experienced photographers that knows the "tricks of the trade" like pre-focus and panning etc., thus lowering the cost of getting pictures.

I'm not a purist, but that's just my take on it...

If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough...

I want an EOS 7D!! I deviated and went the Sony route. I get Practical Photography (UK Mag) and have been reading about the 7D, and have concluded it will be my next major camera purchase. When that will be is anyone's guess ;)

cargo, i agree with the all-in-one gadget scheme but there should be exceptions right? anyway i'd still settle for the pure photography DSLR but would like to try the ones with the video feature ;)

SNM. Absolutely. Like BaldRick, I didn't buy my mkII for the video, but the option is great to have. I used it for the tennis tournament just recentl, as I was tired of getting the same pictures of the ladies serving and returning... ;-)

timebandit said Hummmm.... yes I am happy ...

Hummmm.... yes I am happy with the results of my Sony Alpha 350, but I need to go up a gear and get myself something weather sealed. The A350 was about QR 3000 so this is a big step up. If I am spending 7D money then I want to move back away from Sony and on to a platform with all the accessories and support I need. I am fed up of reading reviews on kit that is compatible with Canon and Nikon but not Sony.
My Sony has served me very well, and apart from fogging up on a quad ride at Sealine (it was damn hot) http://www.flickr.co... , has never let me down. And it will serve me well until I get the wonga together to buy the beautiful 7D.
