Mobile Internet War, Chapter 1

Following the recent offers on international calls, it seems that Qtel and Vodafone are starting to shift their attention towards Mobile Internet users. Vodafone Qatar is now offering free 300 MB Mobile Internet usage on top of its Flexi Plans until the end of September [1]. Vodafone Qatar has also announced that it will be selling a limited number of iPhones at its outlets [2]. Qtel on the other hand has just launched its new Mobile Internet Packs (50 MB, 250 MB, 1 GB, 3 GB, and Unlimited) along with its Shahry Plans at the prices of QR 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 respectively [3]. Unlike Qtel’s Mobile Broadband packages which are provided with “Data-Only” SIM cards, Qtel’s Mobile Internet Packs can be activated on your existing Shahry SIM card. Although Qtel is not offering any iPhones for sale at their outlets, their business partner Starlink has just started selling iPhones at their retail shops [4].

Data access in Qatar is ...Data access in Qatar is still ridiculously much-much-much expensive. Compare with 3G data offered by Indonesia's Telkomsel in my country:
All without modem contract and billed monthly, if usage more than paid data value the speed lowered to 64kbps unlimited data volume at no extra data charge.
500 MB = 45QR (speed 256kbps, if usage more than 500MB the speed lowered to 64kbps at no extra charge).
1 GB = 82QR (speed 512kbps, 64kbps))
2 GB = 146QR (speed 3.6 mbps, 128kbps)),
Also both QTel and VFone price for GPRS data is 10QR/1 MB. Compare again with Indonesian Telkomsel Operator:
5 MB = 1.8QR (valid 7days)
20 MB = 7.3QR (all other valid for 30 dayas)
100 MB = 18.25QR
300MB = 36.5QR
In some session many other company offer cheaper price. Once I was on leave last August, one company new telecom company named Axis (a joint company of Saudi Telecom and Maxis Malaysia) offer GPRS data access as cheap as 0.00001 USD/kb, not jooking, it is true.
So, do not be surprise those product never sell well in Qatar. Who is crazy want spend 10QR/MB data, execept for super-duper businessman or luckily for QTel/VFone, someone un-intentionally playing with their phone and incidentally being charged for data. That's all.
Now let the operator's-self utilize data access at that price. Make it cheap and get thousand user.
